I still don't get how District 9 was a mind blowing experience when after I left I wanted to slit my wrist and shoot myself, but perhaps I'm just clueless on such matters.

I agree with a lot of the previously mentioned films. Two movies I haven't seen mentioned yet were Independence Day and the Black Hole. I enjoyed both movies, having seen them in the theater, but I don't think they deserved the hype and some of the reviews they received.
One of the things that I feel is important to properly enjoy most scifi films, is getting the opportunity to see them in the theater. Films like 2001, TMP, and Alien were meant to be visual movies aside from the story. Seeing them on tv sort of takes away from the experience. I guess I am fortunate enough to have grown up in the era of good visuals evolving and that being said, I think much of the current stuff gives viewers a let down.
I think CGI is wonderful but, at times, the visual effects overshadow a mediocre story and it turns out a mess. It is great to be thinking this looks great, but what was the story I just saw. The Phantom Menace and the Matrix come to mind. Both were ok, but did the story really grab me? Just my 2 cents.

Back to the future 1 is brilliant, but 2 and 3 are ok. I see your point they are not as great as other films out there, but i am one of the BTTF fans who plans on building my own time machine at some point

"Contact" is my all time favourite film. Those that don't like it can go get their bang, bang 'splosion quotient from ID4.

While Independence Day was a huge hit at the box office, the critical response was tepid at best.
Of course, I'm definitely in the minority on this board, but as far as big dumb spectacle goes, I don't think you can do better than that movie.
So, the one that had mixed reviews (64 at Rotten Tomatoes, 65 at Metacritic) and was a box office bomb? The one that is rarely brought up even among circles here?
I haven't even seen the film (though I admit I'd like to), but that doesn't seem to fit any standard of "overrated" to me.
It's pretty much a given that whenever there's a thread about over or underrated films that a lot of people just take it as an opportunity to either bash a film they don't like or talk up their favourites, regardless of said films' general "rating", which rather defeats the thread's purpose.
As far as films like ID4 goes, it was a huge blockbuster in it's day but (as far as I can tell) hasn't really maintained that standing since it's release.
So I guess it really depends on how you define how a film is rated. In the here and now, or when it came out? I can probably think of quite a few films that were huge on release but have since faded, if not disappeared from memory and conversely you get sleeper hits like say 'The Shawshank Redemption' which sank without a trace on it's release but quietly gained momentum on home video until it was recognised as one of the best films ever made.
It's certainly not an underrated film, despite being a non-starter at the box-office and I wouldn't say it's overrated either, it's a bloody good film and fairly recognised as such.

Overated in that they aren't as good as their reputation would require.........
