You can block just the app notifications if you want, rather than the people.
Other than that, I agree completely. I tend to update it every few days - worst case is twice a day if I have some reason to change it. For other people, I haven't really found statuses to be annoying. If they're boring, I forget them as soon as I read them.
Looking at my status updates for the last week (actually, starting on September 3):
Updated it on the 3rd (got a comment), on the fourth (got a like), on the eighth (got a comment), on the ninth (got a comment that led to a conversation), on the tenth (got a like and a comment), and 12 hours ago (didn't get anything).
So much for the theory that nobody cares.

Oh yeah, I started out doing that. Then I noticed that a lot of the application status updates were coming from the same people. When they're repeat offenders, I block them after a bit.

Facebook dont make any sense to me. I tried it and didnt like it so I deactivated my account. I dont care what other people are doing.

I have updated my status four times today. Twice about my huge list of things to do today, once about "Fringe" and the last about Hollywood's complete lack of knowledge about the laws of Physics. Of course it was all meaningless prattle so I guess I deserved to be blocked. Well the updates about my huge to-do list was to keep people from calling me on the phone so it wasn't completely meaningless. It was my nice way of telling everyone to leave me alone so I could get it all done.

one of my cousins updates her status with her daily schedule and a plea for people to send text messages: for example: food, reading, phone, bed, up, church @ 8:30 to do stuff, then churchh. with lil after? text me. :]

^ I used to post in the third person when they had that damn "is" that automatically posted with the update. Now I just do whatever. Sometimes I will forget. Don't hate me though. I really don't mean to do it but habits are hard to break.

Your cousin's name wouldn't happen to be Christine, would it? I know one person who did that all the time. But, like I said earlier, I just ignored it.
That's a hold-over from how it was before. Back then, it would say [Alidar Jarok is] and you could only add stuff afterwards. I used to make fun of people for switching to first person halfway through (e.g. Alidar Jarok really needs to get a new hat because my old one is ugly). Then I decided it was just a facebook meme and went with the flow by having slit person. Now that it doesn't matter I go back and forth between first and third depending on what my status is).

I usually don't care what people put as their statuses, although what my 15-year-old cousin does is kind of annoying: she updates regularly, but usually her status is just something vapid about the Jonas Brothers (often, she doesn't write anything else, just "Jonas, Jonas, Jonas"... she's even changed her last name on Facebook to "Jonas"). It's really quite sad.

I usually update my status once a day, sometimes it'll go more often (eg-bitching about the Broncos sucking it up, volleyball matches on campus, things of that sort). People updating many, many times in a day doesn't bother me too much.

Yes, this is why I took a look at Twitter when everyone started going on about it. But that one look was more than enough; pointless status updates is literally all it is.

Facebook has but one function. To mildly amuse when I'm bored as hell, which is more often than not :|. Barely update my status at all. But that's probably due to my Twitter addiction.......it's like a sickness
