First night in Philly; almost mugged :(

Safest way to get by in a potentially dangerous city like Philly is to present yourself as being from Detroit.

On the other hand, anyone who decides to fuck with you in spite of or perhaps because of this is likely to be armed to the teeth.

Yep. I'm here in Philadelphia and I'm leaving a friend's apartment when a guy comes up to me and tries to steal my ITouch. Blargh :( Luckily I got away from him after being forceful and after I got away from him, I joined up with some construction guys. They were nice ^.^

Yes, cities are wonderful places...

Something similar happened to me 20+ years ago but they followed me in a car after I got away from him. I was able to lose them but the heart was beating for sure.

Oh please, I've lived in one of the most dangerous cities in the US for a decade and never had a problem. Cities are wonderful places; they're full of culture and diversity and history and art and commerce and life and people. Being safe in them is about how you conduct yourself and being smart about where you go.

Philly is like any large city, best not be alone and best be careful at night in all but the highest trafficked areas.

And also, don't flash expensive electronics on the street.

I wasn't. It was in my pocket.

Then how'd he know you had it?

Tasers suck. I can't carry a knife either since I can't carry one on a plane.
Local camping/hunting supply: Cheap knife, or cheap can of bear/animal mace (whatever that store's selling it as).

As for getting knife where you're going: Checked luggage (not tried this, but I know people that routinely fly with their blades, around as well as in an out of the country, and just pack them in their checked bag(s). If you're going to be in one spot for a few days, just Fed Ex/Mail it ahead to where your staying; I know one person that does then whenever he goes to visit family, mails it 4 to 5 days ahead and has it waiting on him when he gets there, drop it in the mail for home when he leaves.

Mega City One is the worst. Block wars all the time.

When the shit hits the fan (zombies, wars, famines, various disasters), cities are the last place you wanna be.

That's why the post-apocalyptic movies, it's rednecks, bikers, cults and neo-nazis who thrive. Almost everyone else perished in the centers of civilization.

Seconded. :techman:

Not all cities are universally dangerous, either. I'm perfectly comfortable wandering around downtown Ottawa by myself at night.

I visited Philly about 20 years ago.

Sad to hear it's still a festering shithole.

Joe, safe as milk
