Star Trek: The Exhibition - What to Expect

Sorry if this feels like a repeat thread, but next week, I'm headed to Philly to see Star Trek The Exhibition at The Franklin Institute. I know they stated no photography, but have posters here still pulled it off?

If you've been to any site The Exhibition has been, please post what to expect. I want to be ready.

Attended opening day. Surreptitiously photographing would be challenging as there are staff walking the exhibit floor. Also, employees are assigned to the Captain's chair replica positioned in front of a green screen and the Ent-D bridge for photo ops. Each photo was about $12 if memory serves. If you pore over each item on display I would plan for about an hour. If not, one could circuit the entire exhibit in about 15-30 min. The bridge of the Ent-D is less refined than the set in Vegas. There is a crude mockup of engineering and the sickbay of the -D. I was hoping that a replica of the classic bridge would have been featured, but unfortunately that one is currently in Detroit. The highlight was the ST XI uniforms on display. 6 out of 10 rating.

I was at one at least 10 years ago at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, it was cool. Had a full sized "working" mock up of the bridge of the TNG bridge and a whole slew of other stuff. No pics, but very cool.

Way the hell too expensive to not allow your own photography. If I want a picture of myself walking down the Enterprise-D hall, I'm gonna take one (security be damned).

I really can't recommend the exhibition.

When JuanBolio and I went the the one in Detroit, on a weekday at about 4pm, it was DEAD. Aside from us, the only other people was a couple with two young kids. As far as staff, there was a guy at the beginning telling us the rules (and giving us shit for wearing street clothes instead of Starfleet uniforms... but then he said my fedora was awesome so I didn't kill him), a girl at the transporter console, and a security guard walked through the area at the beginning. After we had walked through I decided I wanted a picture of us on the bridge, but the photographer had left at that point.

I probably could have taken as many pictures as I wanted, but I didn't because I'm paranoid. So, yeah, if you want to take pictures, go on a weekday just before closing time.

What he said. I thought the bridge set was a tad shoddy and static, but still very cool. They were probably made that way to keep kids from breaking shit - you can actually walk everywhere, touch everything, sit in any chair... that aspect is pretty cool. Its not a totally authentic bridge mockup, since a lot of the consoles are missing and I think its a good deal smaller in size, but still it rates high on my scale of nifty things I've seen in my life. The uniforms, props, and ship models were beyond reproach in awesomeness. However... partially due to making it accessible to the general public, partially due to my being a HUGE geek, I didn't learn much if anything I didn't already know.

I went to it during the last week of June. Id say most of the exhibition focused on the costumes. To be honest I was a bit disappointed. I wanted to see a lot more in the way of models. Still had fun and dont regret spending the money. I enjoyed looking over the TNG consoles and looking for the in jokes.

Can't take your own photos ?? WTF ? When the show/exhibit was in San Diego and Los Angeles, we were allowed to take photos (and boy did I take a lot of them)--- Boo.. no photos ? Why the change in policy ?

I went to the one in Grand Rapids about 10 years ago, they had the Enterprise D bridge along with a lot of uniforms, the three I remember most are Worf's TNG Season 1 and/or 2 uniforms, Kirk's bloodstained uniform from TWOK, and maybe Janeway's uniform from some early season of VOY or something. There are a lot of artifacts and things, but the whole Enterprise D bridge deal is based around science questions, and you can sit at any console you want and answer them. If you answer them right, you can "fight" different ships. I remember the center seat allowed you to fight the Klingons, and two of the back stations allowed you to fight Romulans and the Ferengi. And by fight, i mean, press a button and watch stock footage of ships being destroyed. The bridge is kind of "dumbed down", so it doesn't look exactly like the real deal, but close enough for the feel.

There was a bluescreen transporter room which was sweet, but I think the video of it cost extra money or something. There was a planetarium presentation presented by Levar Burton and/or Leonard Nimoy (cant remember), which went on and on.

It was fun over all and good to see all of the things. I remember that the guy with "the largest collection of star trek memorobelia", which wasn't even that big of a collection to begin with. I think my collection is near as big. It was nice to see it though.

Oct. 23, 2009 Tech Museum in San Jose, CA - new exhibits

On Oct. 23, the Tech will open "Star Trek: The Exhibition,"

will take up more than 15,000 square feet — the Tech will take over the adjacent Parkside Hall. (The hall is operated by Team San Jose, which is a partner in bringing in the show.)

The version of the exhibition that will come to San Jose is
larger than those that have been installed in other museums, although much of it is currently at the Detroit Science Center. "The producers of the show were very excited when they saw the space they had to work with, which is significantly more than they had in Detroit," said Williams, adding that additional exhibits are being put together in Los Angeles for the Tech showing.
The exhibit will include an authentic replica of the bridge from the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (that would be the Enterprise from the original TV series), the actual shooting model of the Borg Cube (from the later TV series plus the film "Star Trek: First Contact")

"Many of the comments they got in Detroit about the show were about why the new film wasn't part of the exhibit and why it wasn't part of the historical timeline in the exhibit," Williams said
That gap in the space-time continuum will be plugged in the revised version.

Is it leaving Philly? I wanted to see it and haven't made the drive yet ... four hours is a lot with kids in tow.

We saw the exhibition in Detroit, and maybe I'm too easily impressed but I really enjoyed it, as did my husband, and even my 16-year-old niece, who's seen a few episodes and is a casual fan at best (my husband and I are long-time fans, of all the series and movies). There are a lot of costumes (Sisko is taller than I thought, and the TOS uniform material looks very heavy and uncomfortable), a lot of very cool props, and lots of placards with interesting information to read. My favorite part was the timeline encompassing all of Trek history in the last room; Mr_Whatsit and I were geeking out mightily over that.

The day we were there was a bit busier, and there were museum personnel in several places; enough where it would have been hard to take a photo. We did get "official" photos taken on the bridge and the transporter platform.

End conclusion, we all three felt it was well worth the money, and would do it again in a second.

The Detroit one is moving to San Jose. The one in Philly is there until Sept. 20, I believe. I haven't seen any word on where it's heading after that.

The ones of you that have seen are lucky. I never been to one of those, and I very much want to go to one. But I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and those other cites its at is way too faraway. I wish it would come here or least nearby so I can go to it. Do any of you know if its comming to the Dallas/Fort Worth area?
