My So-Called Life

So, Hulu added the show a couple weeks ago, and I'm finally getting around to watching it. I remember years ago seeing one episode and thinking I would really like to see the rest, but I just never managed it. So now I am.

I really like it for the most part. I think Rayanne is my favorite character. I'm kind of surprised the actress didn't do much afterwards, because I think she's really good.

I don't really like most of the guy characters though, Rickie being the exception. I find it rather cliche that people starting discussions about the show on Hulu all want Brian and Angela to get together. I pretty much hate both Brian and Jordan. Brian has absolutely no self-esteem to the point of repelling everyone he's around, and Jordan is a complete space cadet - *hand waves in front of face* Hello? Anyone home? I knew Brians in school. I never knew a Jordan. Either way - ew.

Angela I don't know what to do with. I think it's probably because in many ways I was a lot like her. Which I'm sure was the whole point - we're supposed to relate to Angela.

I think it's kind of good that there was only one season. I think they covered a lot with the episodes they did, and even now, having watched all but a few, I can feel them running out of steam a little bit. I like that it's this flaming brand in TV history that burned bright & fast. It suits the show.

I'm on "Betrayal" (wow) after which there are two more episodes, which I will probably watch before poking my head back in here, so don't worry too much about spoilers. But please, discuss!

It didn't grow on me.

But there are so many good shows that HULU has chosen. I'm currently subscribed to One Piece. I'm looking forward to seeing that show again later tonight. I wish that HULU would show most subtitles on those shows, so we can understand what they are saying.

From what I understand they're working hard to add CC to their library. I think they're prioritizing new episodes, though, so the catalog might take a while. They apparently can't just use whatever captions get used for TV - at least, there's no quick copy/paste to add them to online streaming video. I use the captions quite a bit too, so I'm with you on wanting them added.

I've seen a couple of episodes of this, and quite enjoed them. The teen drama genre is usually a big turn-off, but this series had some realism and good characterisation, which elevated it above its peers. The creators of later shows such as Dawson's cite it as a big influence.

That mother, though. There haven't been a lot of TV characters I've outright hated, but.....

I really enjoyed My So-Called Life. Clare Danes was awesome as Angela and really aced those really emotional moments her character faced, to the point that my own eyes often welled up a bit. Rayanne and Rickie were fun too, and it's cool to see the father guesting in other series from time to time.

I'm kinda surprised more people aren't posting. I got the impression that the show was this cult hit that everyone loved and thought should have gotten renewed. Is a puzzlement...

Anyway, I just finished the last episode, and the whole Cyrano thing was laid on WAY too thick, and out of nowhere Jordan tried to develop a personality and almost succeeded but not quite. And Brian almost grew a backbone, but not quite.

I hate that it ended with Angela and Rayanne still at odds. I also hate that we didn't get to see any of the play. I loved the idea of Rayanne as Emily - talk about casting against type!

Overall I really enjoyed getting to see the show. I'm glad I didn't blind-buy it on DVD, though. I think it's going to be one of those shows that once was enough.

I love this show! I have it on dvd. I have a affinity for shows that are aimed at Generation X. It makes me feel even more nostigic, due to the fact I was in high school at the same time the show was set.

To top it off I did want Angella and Brain to end up together. How can anyone not root for the nerd, even though he could be a ass at times. Also I got to admit I liked the parents on the show. usually the parents on these type of shows are boring but I liked them, on this show. I have seen the dad in other shows, such as "Angel" and "Lost" but I guess Bess Armstrong just vansihed off the planet, after this show ended.

Ugh - no! Brian was just so ... I don't have a word for it. There was just something about him that repelled me. I felt like Angela did, "Would you just go away, please?"

Jordan was just as bad for different reasons, but I can actually see myself ending up liking him if they'd had the chance to give him a background story. I couldn't figure out how anyone could end up such a space cadet. It was like there was NOTHING in his brain but air. The fact that Angela spent all her time sighing over him drove me a little crazy. Yes, he's very pretty. But there isn't a single thought in his head!

I kind of had that reaction, too. I didn't mind him as a character, but he could be such a jerk sometimes. And I kind of hate the cliche that the girl has to choose the nerdy guy in the end. Sometimes it works, but not in this case.

LOL, he was kind of dumb. But he was sweet, or at least he could be.

I really loved this show. I was in high school when it was on, and I remember how much it got right. Teenagers can be so annoying, but to them, their pain and angst is really real... and the show got that. I loved that about it. I mean, absolutely, at fifteen, you're going to be mooning over the hot, pretty guy whether he's smart or the right one or not. You're a teenage girl, that's who you go for.

There were some clunkers--that awful Ricky is homeless Xmas episode comes to mind--but for the most part it was a pretty brilliant show.
