Watching Order?

I'm very new to Star Trek and I would like to see it all. After watching Star Trek (2009), I have become hooked. I've seen, so far, TOS Season 1 and have started on Season 2. My question is whether I should care the exact order of things.

This is my general list. Is there any place, between episodes, that I should watch the movies V-X? Should I jump around between TNG and DS9, DS9 and Voyager since they overlapped? Am I caring too much? Please help me with the order of things...

Well, I'm actually planning on watching them in chronologicaly order (whenever I get Enterprise), but since you're fairly new to Trek, I would recommend watching it this order:

Star Trek
Movies 1 - 6
The Next Generation
Deep Space Nine
Voyager
Enterprise

With Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis placed in and around Next Gen, DS9, and Voyager.

Well, for the films TFF to Nemesis, its slightly complicated. I would recommend watching 5 and 6 before TNG, then Generations sometime after TNG finishes, but before DS9's S3 'Defiant'. First Contact, you can put sometime in early DS9 S5, just before 'In Purgatory's Shadow'.
Insurrection should be watched sometime in early DS9 S7,and Nemesis after you've finished Voyager.

For TNG, DS9, and Voyager if you really want, you should look on memory-alpha.org and search the years 2369 (DS9 S1), 2370(DS9 S2), etc, up to 2375, they have a roughly chronological order there. Most of the time it doesn't really matter though, however, do start watching DS9 in the middle of TNG's S6, and Voyager in the middle of DS9 S3. For the DS9 episodes (with TNG/VOY), you can watch whichever one you feel more like at the moment, I guess. Enterprise, you can put whereever you like, but at least make it after First Contact.

Thank you for your help! So, this is my new list. I cannot be too picky about watching episodes in exact production order as I do not own any of these. I'll be renting from Netflix. Please let me know if there are any key episodes in the TNG, DS9, Voyager overlaps that I need to watch in the proper order. Thank you again.

Hi!

I've been planning to do the same thing, and wondered if you might like to coordinate our viewing to share our thoughts as we go along. As for what order I intend to view them in, I think airdate order seems best. Memory Alpha makes this easy: for example, if you go to their page for "The Nagus" it lists the episode as 260th of 727 released overall, and if you click the next arrow it takes you to their page for "Starship Mine", 261st of 727 released overall. I planned to make an exception for TOS, whose episodes are better viewed in production order, since they were presented in a more haphazard fashion in those days.

I am flexible, though, if you are indeed interested in coordinating our viewings!

I've been planning to do the same thing, and wondered if you might like to coordinate our viewing to share our thoughts as we go along. As for what order I intend to view them in, I think airdate order seems best. Memory Alpha makes this easy: for example, if you go to their page for "The Nagus" it lists the episode as 260th of 727 released overall, and if you click the next arrow it takes you to their page for "Starship Mine", 261st of 727 released overall. I planned to make an exception for TOS, whose episodes are better viewed in production order, since they were presented in a more haphazard fashion in those days.

I am flexible, though, if you are indeed interested in coordinating our viewings!

While it sounds like great fun, sadly, I'm sure it won't work out. I juggle a 60 hour work week and a relationship. My partner is far from interested in anything Trek related and will feel ignored if I spend too much time with this new (planned) obsession. Looking at the huge list of all things Star Trek related I have to catch up with and knowing the very little time I will have to to devote to it is slightly discouraging. Starting Sept 1st, he starts his career and I'll have some time while he's at work. It's only one day a week but I should be able to get in at least 3-4 episodes in starting that day. I'll try to get in what I can during the rest of the week. Sorry to dash your hopes. It sounds like a fun cooperation. Maybe you'll find someone soon.

P.S. The idea of watching in chronological order is a good one, but I'd like the see the evolution of the special effects the first time around.

A friend of mine (who is not new to Star Trek) spent the last 18 months doing exactly this with his DVD's. He tried watching all of it in chronological order and came up with pretty much this exact list.

Two years ago, I did something similar with my DVD's. Except in my case, I watched chronologically by series. I started with ENTERPIRSE, then after that four seasons, watched the three TOS seasons, the two TAS seasons, six Kirk movies, then TNG the series, it's four movies, DS9, VOYAGER, straight through,etc.

I bring this up because you mention you want to see the evolution of the special effects. To do this, ENTERPRISE has to go last. Or, if you have the TOS remastered sets, THEY have to go last. In case, you didn't know, like Star Wars, there are two DVD versions of TOS. One is the original effects made in the 1960's, and a second set with the effects remastered from 2006. Which of those do you have? Were you planning to watch both? I just bought all three rematered seasons off Amazon and am watching them nightly. I'm on "Space Seed" tonight.

I hope you enjoy yourself. Star Trek (in all it's versions) is the best show out there. Although, some are better than others. Still, you're in for a good time.

I'm in a pretty similar situation, actually. I work about 30 hours a week, go to school about 20, and am also in a relationship with a philistine who will not touch Trek. I thought I would set an initial goal of two episodes per day, but I am not sure how sustainable that will truthfully be. In any case, I would like to give it a shot, and I hope you will offer us your impressions throughout the journey regardless of whether we keep pace with one another.

I wouldn't make it too complicated. Chronologically, TNG is overlapping with DS9 and DS9 is overlapping with Voyager, and the newest series takes place before the first series.

But nonetheless, I would just start with a single series and watch in its entirety. And then start with the next one. Watch movies 1 to 6 right after having watched TOS, and movies 7 to 10 after having watched TNG.

There is probably only one point in the franchise where a story arc was told between two different series and that is the introduction of the Maquis. It started in TNG season 7 in an episode called Journey's End, then DS9 took over the plot with a two-part episode in season 2 called The Maquis, then TNG explored it in their penultimate episode Preemptive Strike. It shouldn't be too bad if you don't watch it in order, but you might not fully understand what the Maquis are if you don't, and the Maquis play a major role on Voyager.

For the most part though the shows stay separate from one another and there's not really much overlap.

Honestly, I'm not as interested in the chronology so much as being not being lost when I get to a "crossover" episode. Thanks for the tip on the "Maquis". I'll keep it in mind.

Like I said earlier, I am interested in seeing the special effects evolve, so I want to see the series/movies in some sort of order.

To respond to an earlier inquiry, yes I know there are two versions of TOS, and I started my first season with the "classics", but switched to the remastered.

Yep - it's life but not as we know it... (or maybe there's no life involved at all?)

I've said before that I'm a TOS person but I don't really mind whether or not it's the old or remastered version I'm looking at; the main thing is that it should entertain me. Honestly, it's so long ago since I saw it (in the case of some episodes, over 30 years) that I don't care much about the special effects as I really don't remember them and probably wouldn't know the difference anyway...
