Serenity vs. Star Trek

But there was no allegory, morality play... whatever you call it that made the best episodes of Trek stand out from rest. Serenity had that. So in a way it was more like a classic episode of Star Trek than XI. So nyah.

And don't forget! Serenity not only had far more interesting female roles, but they had a purpose and stood their own ground. The new Star Trek movie is nothing compared to Serenity in that regards, and Joss did it without making all the women wear short skirts.

I enjoy Serenity and love Star Trek XI. I'm a hardcore Firefly and Star Trek fan. There's no reason why one can't enjoy the other.

Also, Serenity had it's own Engineering set.

:guffaw:

Yeah, because the engine room on Serenity was just so damn big and all out there, because the sets for a huge starship and a small Firefly class transport are exactly the same and are going to cost exactly the same. Yeah, good one.

I've seen both and loved them, but I think Serenity edges out the win for me. I'll still be buying the new Star Trek dvd though. :D
I as well, and making my family tired of seeing it, I conjure.

LOL! I haven't bothered forcing my family to see the Firefly or Serenity dvd's. Most of them aren't into Science Fiction. However, my brother did borrow my Serenity dvd and loved it. I may have him view the Firefly dvd set, as well, if he's up to it. He may enjoy them. :D

Enterprise's engine room is bigger than the size of Serenity's, but Trek had 3.75 X the budget. So why does Serenity's Engine Room look so much more real?;)

What's wrong with miniskirts?

Roy Mustang would be proud.

...because they were pretty much able to reuse and rebuil the sets from the show.

The Star Trek production team mad the choice to do it all from scratch.

Because it's stuff you can get from a salvage yard. I love Firefly, but make no bones about it, the engine room really is just a small room. The engine room of a starship like the Enterprise needs far more going for it than a spinny thing and some wires and boxes.

You mean like pipes & concrete?:guffaw:

Sorry- easy joke. A little more CGI could've gone a long way in makin' Trek's engine room a little more glossy is all I'm sayin'.

Meh. I'm more interested in storyline than CGI. Your mileage may vary.

What's wrong with miniskirts?

Absolutely nothing.
And if you ask me Trek XI didn't even have miniskirts. It had skirts.

Don't make me post real miniskirts to prove my point.:p

I don't buy it. Indeed, you are talking through yer hat on this one. I defy you to show me a skirt shorter than the ones we saw in Trek. I also defy you to show me girls in light blue stockings and lingere engaging in a pillow fight and women dressed only in lace aprons feeding each other whipped cream. Can't do it, can you?

(Seriously, can you? I'm hurtin' real bad over here...)

I love both too. But Serenity more. The proof hit me on the second or third time watching Star Trek in the theater: there is no tension in the last act. Once Kirk reassuringly tells Spock "It's gonna work," the audience knows it too. Their plan goes off without a hitch. Serenity, on the other hand, made you believe that everything had already gone wrong, that the whole crew except maybe Zoe and Inara were doomed to die in the most horrible way during the final battle. For fans of the tv series who loved these characters, the last half of Serenity was like 900% more intense and gut wrenching than the climax of Star Trek. But then, we're just getting to know these people anyway (all over again). So it isn't really fair to compare the two, yet.

Maybe we are all so desensitized to entertainment nowadays that if it is not shown in gut wrenching absolute in-your-face visuals, we cannot imagine any implied storylines anymore. When Kyle Reese was describing how the future was and how important John Connor is, you could imagine the visuals upon your mind. But a whole freakin' planet is swallowed in a black hole, a wife losing her husband right in front of her eyes, a son losing a mother in a more personal fashion, a hard-as-logical Vulcan finally admitting to his love for his wife, a characters pining for the father he never had, an aged Vulcan watching his home vanishing right in front of his eyes ... those were weak compared to Wash getting impaled?

Right.
