Iron Giant movie?

Well...the reason they should do it is because it flopped. Hardly anyone saw it besides genre fans like us..that is why they should do it.
It sounds like you think creating a new movie and having it become a commercial success will somehow redeem the first's failure in that regard. It won't. The thing that 'redeems' it is that it's a great movie, critically well received and that you enjoyed it. Isn't that enough?

A theatrical re-release would be far better than remaking it as a live action movie.
Agreed.

I've never seen the "The Iron Giant." Now I feel like I should.
You should. I was never particularly interested in it but one day I had nothing else to do so I watched it. I was awed at how good it really was. I agree a re-release would be great so I could see it on the big screen.

Thank you Christopher, for your excellent posts. My mind is reeling (no pun intended).

I always have The Iron Giant on my list of favorite SF films because, I think it belongs there - along side the original Day The Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet, Metropolis, Blade Runner, 2001 et al. It's a great movie.

In a similar vein, I always put Spirited Away on my list of favorite fantasy films, because it's a great movie.

Films have intrinsic value; they stand (or fall) on their own as works of art. They don't need box office success to validate their worth. Movies do require a certain amount of success to gain notoriety and to make a profit - but popularity and/or box office success is hardly an imprimatur of excellence.

I'd love to see TIG again in a theater. As a matter of fact, a group of us prevailed to get it a screened a few years ago at the Heartland FIlm Festival as part of a retrospective. It was one way to spread the word on this marvelous film.

As others have said, no need to remake a perfect film, particularly one that already exists in its perfect medium.

I always say that if you don't cry (or at least tear up) during this film you have no heart.

You know what part I'm talking about :techman:

I'd be pretty upset if they remade The Iron Giant in live action. More so with, say, Alvin and the Chipmunks or Transformers.... and I don't know why I'd be more upset; maybe because The Iron Giant is more current, and cause I liked it more than I did Transformers and The Chipmunks (and others, those were just the first examples that popped in my head).

Hopefully "Princess and the Frog" will do well in really re-igniting the general public's passion for animated feature films. I want to see more 2d animation!!!

Absolutely! God, I hope that movie is good.

Well, I'll admit my suggestion of a theatrical re-release is a tad selfish, as I never got to see Iron Giant in the theater and have only "enjoyed" it on TV... Would be nice to see it whole, without commercials, on a nice big screen.

Maybe it's because I'm an artist, but I am SO excited about PatF. I'm really hoping it brings about a new 2D-animated renaissance to Hollywood. I'm hoping in the future that perhaps the novel I'm writing could be adapted as an animated feature in the vein of Treasure Planet and, especially, Titan AE.

And really, the popularity that both Iron Giant and Titan AE have seen over the years proves that one can successfully make a 2D-animated film without it having to star a princess.

Joy
