Spaceballs (1987).

One of my all time faves since i was 6 when i saw this in a theater back in 1987, it's a funny and entertaining spoof of Sc-if and Star Wars combined.

If only they made good parodies like this instead of garbage like "Epic Movie", "Disaster Movie", "Meet The Spartans" and "Date Movie".

Love it. Best parody movie that was ever made.. (not really, but since I love Starwars..) and I have recently gotten to watch it again a few times, since my 10 year old has started watching it over and over :D

Fun movie, but it's hard to top AIRPLANE! as the best parody ever made.

Sadly, people copied Airplane without realizing that, for all the non-sequitors, there has to still be a basic story. Mel Brooks' movies had an actual story, too.

You know, I never really cared for the movie. There's a few great jokes, but most of them fall flat. If it wasn't for the Star Wars connection this movie would have faded into obscurity a long time ago.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights was a much better Mel Brooks parody.

It's alright. I watched it a few nights ago, recalled that I use to think it was a riot. Nowadays, not so much. It has some moments, but it feels very "Mel Brooks Formula" and hasn't held up well for me over the years.

Despite the subject matter, it's probably my least favorite Mel Brooks film--at least of those I've seen. Certainly Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and The Producers I would rank much higher, and value much more.

I thought Galaxy Quest was better. ;)

Anyone ever watch the cartoon they made a year or so ago? All I heard about it was they had way too many boob jokes in it.

That's certainly my feeling too. Of those three, I still have a special spot for Young Frankenstein.

But yes - Airplane! is by far the greatest spoof movie of them all. :guffaw:

I liked Spaceballs a lot when I was young, but not so much now. It has its moments, and Rick Moranis is especially funny, but as a whole it seems lacking. Still entertaining though.

It's fun, but I do think Men in Tights is better.

I tried to watch the first episode of the Spaceballs cartoon, but it just wasn't funny like the movie was... A rather big disappointment.

Growing up, and all through junior high and high school, we thought it was the funniest thing ever made.

When I re-watched it recently, now 25 years old, I realized it's really not funny at all beyond a few sight gags and one-liners ("We ain't found shit!"). Somewhere along the way, Mel Brooks started writing Family Guy humor instead of actual jokes -- and by that I mean Spaceballs derives its humor from merely referencing other works (namely, Star Wars), instead of actually making jokes. (Oh, I get it. It's Yoda, except instead of a wise old sage midget, he's a Jewish midget. Cool.)

"HA! Do you see what I did there? I made a thinly veiled reference! Do you see what I was referencing? Because I made made you think of something else, it's funny! Laugh! Laugh, you fools! Are you not entertained?"

It's a really stark contrast to something like Young Frankenstein, wherein the Monster, upon seeing the girl by the pond, gets a knowing grin and glint in his eyes, as a nice callback to the original movie. Then it cuts. End of scene. The Mel Brooks that made Spaceballs would, instead, have the Monster toss the girl in the pond, laugh like a maniacal jackass the whole while and then say, "I feel like I've been here before."

Very funny movie, I enjoyed it. I wouldn't buy it though. Nothing against the film but I just don't tend to watch comedy films more than once so I feel it's kind of a waste to buy them unless I know I'm going to rewatch them.

It's interesting to note, too, that Young Frankenstein is more a Gene Wilder movie than a Mel Brooks one.

Hell, Brooks wanted to cut the "Puttin' on the Ritz" bit, if you can believe that.
