If you omit the disappointing overseas take, TREK looks even mightier than it already is. HAD the movie reached 700 or 800 million worldwide we might actually have looked at a potential Best Picture nomination even if it stood no shot of ever actually winning.
Sigh. Comments about Trek's "disappointing overseas take" just keep showing up on here. Various other threads have discussed how $125+ million actually far exceeded Paramount's expectations (which were for $100 million tops overseas.) Trek is not a well-known or popular commodity outside of North America and a few other countries. Hence, it is unfair to compare it to other internationally popular franchises such as Harry Potter and Transformers. I posted a link to an article a couple of weeks ago which quoted a Paramount exec as stating that they were very happy with the film's overseas performance.
Perhaps this new article, which was just posted on TrekWeb, will help convince people that this movie was an "unqualified blockbuster" for Trek.
