Karl Urban -- blond or brunet?

Wow, he does tend to gravitate to sci-fi, doesn't he? Of course, he seems to be a fan himself, so it makes sense. Which makes me happy; I can always get Mr_Whatsit to see a sci-fi film. He'll watch any piece of cheese that remotely resembles science fiction.

Not that I think this will be cheese. I just mean that my husband's easy when it comes to his sci-fi, so as long as Karl Urban sticks with that genre, it's a guaranteed viewing for me.

Karl to be in Tron Legacy?

The movie isn't listed on IMDb so I don't know if any of this is actually happening, but according to this blog it's a sequel to Tron and it'll be out next year.
I think they're talking about TRON 2.0 (2011). Most of the casting appears to be still in the "rumored" stage (including Urban's, apparently, though I think he could be good in it) but there was a teaser trailer of sorts which ran at Comic-Con last year. Copies were turning up on YouTube at the time and being taken right back down again, sometimes within an hour. All that's out there now are some very murky phone-cam type pirate vids.

Here's a blog which appears to be following it:

No mention of Urban that I can see, on a quick skim.

Ah, thank you. I was asking mr trampledamage about it, and he came to the same conclusion - whoever wrote that initial blog post is obviously jumping the gun a bit (and has certainly got his wires crossed about the trailer because the you-tube link on that page is a trailer for the original Tron!)!

mr trampledamage also found this web-site about Tron 2

Flynn Lives

But nothing anywhere about Karl. Still I live in hope, because I love Tron and I would love to see a good sequel.

My husband is a big fan of TRON. He is SO looking forward to the new one. He said he's going to make me see it 20 times. :D

He just gave me this link to a leaked trailer from last year's ComicCom. Jeff Bridges is in it, and when he comes on the screen, the crowd goes nuts.

And here is a cell-phone ad from last year:

I watched the Two Towers extras recently because I couldn't remember whether he was interviewed or not. I figured he had to be but I had no memory of him at all! (In my defence, there's a lot of interviews and I tend to watch all six discs of interviews in sequence :) )
So, was he in there?

I hope for your sake that Karl is in it then! And nice planning by your hubby - making sure you owe him one (or twenty ;) ) before Tron 2 comes out!

Neat, thanks. I'll pass these onto mr trampledamage - also a huge Tron fan :)

Yes :D Just a couple of times, but it's nice to see him talking about making the movie. Interestingly, I don't know if this is the standard NZ pronunciation, but Peter Jackson pronounces Urban with the emphasis on the second syllable - the "ban" part, so it does actually sound like the word ban rather than the normal way of saying urban where the ban part sounds more like bun. (If that makes any sense at all!)

Ur-BAN (oor-BAHN) would be the German pronunciation, I think, where Karl's name comes from (Karl-Heinz Urban). Basically, it's the continental pronunciation, though. It's not only used in German. There was a Pope Urban; it's a Latin name. Don't know where Peter got it, unless he got it from Karl?

Etymology of the word "urban" is from "urbis," of unknown origin, meaning city. The motto of the City of Chicago is Latin "Urbs in Horto," or city in a garden.

^ Looks like some great stuff in that vid. I will have to study it further.

Accented on the first syllable would be what I'd expect, but I also know that even today there are still a lot of regional variants in German pronunciation.

i dont know if this has been posted..
in a new documentary about sword fighting..
Cast members and crew from Peter Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy act as representative pundits in the entertainment field to impart knowledge of how the sword appears in feature film. Nearly every angle is covered, from sword design by conceptual artist John Howe and fabrication by Weta Workshop staff to the screen choreography of legendary Hollywood sword master Bob Anderson and use of the sword by actors Viggo Mortensen and Karl Urban. Thespian John Rhys-Davies provides exceptional narration with a voice and accent that could melt butter. With his voice, Rhys-Davies could keep a listening audience spellbound while reading the contents of a Twinkie.

I'd agree, were it a word of germanic origin; but they are notional on words of foreign origin.

Oh yes, thanks for posting this, pookha! I must order it - I love sword-fighting in movies, I'm really looking forward to watching this (interviews with Karl and Viggo are merely icing on the cake :) )

So...I was watching the rest of the commentary version of the Riddick movie, and of course paying attention to Karl's performance in addition to his commentary, and it occurred to me: wouldn't Lord Vaako be a great model for the mirror universe McCoy if they ever decided to take one of the future movies in that direction? Of course, I'd ditch the hair, but YMMV.

Once my brain recovered from the temporary short-circuit caused by the estrogen overload that was caused by the thought of nuMcCoy's looks combined with Vaako's smolder, the idea really started growing on me. We never got to see that McCoy in "Mirror, Mirror," the TOS episode, but I've wondered in the past (and now even more so) what he'd be like. So I now have a prototype in my head for my fantasies--er, my fiction.

So am I nuts? What do my fellow Urbanites think?

 You are nuts, but in a good way!

I love this idea! Although I'm also in love with Crusher Disciple's suggestion that Mirror McCoy would be a happy guy who gives everyone hugs ;)

Actually maybe we could combine the two... Have McCoy be part of a previously unseen early rebellion...

This could be fun!

I think CD's probably right: mirror McCoy would be a cheerful guy -- and therefore probably killed before he ever got posted to the ship. ;)

Ah yes, but remember the kind of horrors that prime universe McCoy referred to in MU McCoy's Sickbay, so he'd be a cheerful sadist, evidently.

Plus I like to think that PU McCoy is just an old softy underneath, so he'd be all deliciously...well, not evil, but all military and hot, in the MU.

ETA: Hee, I just realized that if MU McCoy was a cheerful hugger, he'd be Star Trek's version of Evil Cartman (from the South Park "Spookyfish" episode. For those who haven't seen it, Evil Cartman sported a Spock goatee, but was kind, industrious, and generous, unlike his real-world counterpart. Stan and Kyle wanted to dump the real Cartman and keep Evil Cartman).

Yeah, they'd have to have some kind of evil twin. And everybody's hotter in the MU; clearly the evil side from "Enemy Within" is indispensible.

watched the Riddick thing this weekend - full of Urban goodness. My theory is that MirrorSpock is hotter than Spock so Mirror NuSpock and Mirror NuMcCoy would be hotter too. yikes!!! I'm a Spock grrl but you guys are tempting me to stray over to the dark side - it looks so inviting . . .

We have cookies :)

If your calculation is correct then Mirror NuMcCoy will be... on fire
