Karl Urban -- blond or brunet?

NileQT87's work in the Zachary Quinto Appreciation Thread has created a lot of new Spock fans (or brought them out into the open anyway ;) ) - this is the first poll that McCoy hasn't walked away with!

I think I might be the only one here who loves that hair :)
I think his hair style makes him look futuristically hot in that movie. :bolian:

Glad there's someone else here! The hair, the armour and the moody stare... I love it all!

Okay, I now have to make a public apology for my "Ewwie" comment re: Karl's look in "Chronicles of Riddick." I watched it yesterday--well, actually, I just fast-forwarded to all the parts with him and skipped the rest--and I have to say, he is extremely hot in this movie. Even with the haircut (which I'm still iffy about). I loved his voice in this, although I almost didn't recognize it at first; very deep, with hints of his McCoy accent and the occasional Kiwi inflection popping up. He's like the very definition of the word "smoldering" in this movie.

I did NOT like Thandie Newton in this, though. She was gorgeous, and they definitely had some chemistry (I don't know if any sexier scenes were cut out, since I watched it on TNT), but she was very shrill and got on my nerves. But I would have watched more of her to see more of Lord Vaako.

OH MY. I had no idea he was in the Riddick thing. (of course I was all eyes for Mr Vin) I'm a Spock grrrl but Mr Urban is definitely hotter in this little universe! OH MY OH MY OH MY.

Loved seeing Thandie evil -so beautiful and so wicked! loved.loved.loved. what a wonderful way to start my work day - thank you!!!

*scurries back to Spock app thread before absence is noted . . . *

Ok ladies, now you have done it.

I shall be going on vacation next week. I shall have to rent Riddick and watch it to catch the Urban goodness. :rommie:

Cool! :bolian:

I didn't mind Thandie Newton. Although, I think they could have made her a little more evil. It would have fit in well with that character.

As weird as it sounds, I think it was something about the timbre of her voice. I've seen her in other things and normally I like her, but every time she spoke in this movie, it was like fingernails on a chalkboard. Maybe it was something in the sound editing.

Or maybe it was that I wanted her husband for myself, the beeyotch.

I still have no clue what to think of Karl's hair in Riddick. From some angles it was hot and others...not so much.

I actually stayed up a bit later just to see him in Riddick the other night despite having to get up for work early the next morning. It was so worth it! Wish I coulda stayed up for more. The movie was not so entertaining but Karl sure was.

My theory on Riddick is that it started out with some promise, but by the time filming started it was such a trainwreck that everybody just did the best they could with it.

^ Agreed. I also think the movie suffered major narrative issues. From the very beginning, it never had a clear motivation but simply played as a series of vignettes edited back to back. The movie had some interesting characters, good ideas, beautiful designs, fascinating concepts and decent special effects but nothing to pull it all together into a cohesive whole. I think with another rewrite and a better director, it could have blown people away.

(This is also the same issue I had with ST: Nemesis. The bones of an excellent story are there but it lost its basic narrative in the hands of a novice director and the needless meddling by the cast, producers and studio. Instead of living up to its potential as an elegant TNG swan song, it became this lumbering behemoth of mediocrity with no real purpose.)

But to be honest, out of all the characters used/introduced in Chronicles, Thandie and Karl's were the most intriguing and interesting. I also wanted to see more of Judi Dench's character. They could have left Riddick out. :rommie:

And Karl is hot with the mawhawk-mullet!

I agree! Which is a shame since Pitch Black was a very enjoyable film and Riddick was a great character. Vin Diesel just tried to do too much with Chronicles. Still it gave us Vaako so I'm not complaining ;)

*happy sigh*

Sooo...for Kosh Naranek and anyone else who's going to watch the DVD, I discovered something fun tonight when I looked at my husband's Riddick Trilogy DVD set. Lo and behold if Karl isn't one of the commenters on the commentary version of the movie along with the director and the actress who plays Keira (or whatever Riddick's friend's name is).

I got through about 30 minutes of it tonight. That wonderful New Zealand accent is just the best to listen to. And he comes across as very intelligent and well-spoken. And he has a nice laugh. What a lucky woman his wife is!

Oh wow - I didn't know that! Not sure if we have the box set, just the Chronicles DVD - I hope it's on there too.

I would never have thought to look at the commentaries for Riddick - it wouldn't have occured to me that he'd be doing one.

I know--I figured if anyone would be commenting, it would be Vin Diesel. I found it totally by accident. I was looking at some screen caps online and saw that there was a sort-of sex scene (no nekkidity, darn it) between Vaako and his wife that wasn't included in the TNT showing. I always look at the bonus features when I put a DVD in for the first time, and my eye was immediately caught by his name at the bottom. So after I watched the kissy scenes, I started watching the movie with the commentary.

It was nice seeing him on the LotR extra tracks. I wonder if there is a list somewhere of DVD extras that people appear in. Probably not; they get everybody from the stars to the hairdressers on those things...

Karl is always fun to watch or listen to; he's such a hugely likable guy!

Loved seeing Judi Dench in it - I joked to the hubs that they must have blown 25% budget getting her on board. Used to seeing her in slightly more high-brow stuff. Loved her ending remark "Who would've calculated those odds?" or something to that effect! :rommie:

I watched the Two Towers extras recently because I couldn't remember whether he was interviewed or not. I figured he had to be but I had no memory of him at all! (In my defence, there's a lot of interviews and I tend to watch all six discs of interviews in sequence :) )
