Kitchen Confessional: Good cooks come out as closeted McD's eaters

When my wife is gone overnight, my son and I sometimes eat MREs. I've also been known to hit the value menu at most fast food places from time to time.

But my real weakness is McDonald's Sausage McMuffin with egg. I just can't help myself.

A&W Mozza Burgers... I don't know if it's the processed cheese, the bacon or the "special sauce" but every once in a while....

I can say with some confidence that I'm one of the best cooks around these parts (cuz I went to school and it's my job 'n stuff), but all modesty aside, even I like to slum it every now and then.

I can eat pre-packaged, processed foods with the best of them.

Just not the Hot Pockets. Dear God, stay away from the Hot Pockets! :scream: :scream:

I do love Taco Bell. Ironically, Taco Bell is really popular in New Mexico. There's like one on every corner, and they're always full.

sometimes I'll have a bowl of guacamole and tortilla chips for dinner. It's so delicious it ought to be a sin.
And it'd be even more divine if you actually put some effort into it. :p

I'm just sayin.

I ate a gordita from Taco Bell the other day. I'm ashamed.

I also have quite a weakness for Cheetos.

Spaghetti O's with meatballs, microwaved.

At the Petco in my town, they have a 'treat bar' with assorted loose dog treats you can get by the pound. They have these green ones that look like football players that taste really good.

Last Friday night, I knew that my wife was going to be going out to dinner with a friend of hers, which meant I would be on the hook for a solo dinner that night.

Before I went home, I stopped at the gas station next-door to my office and bought Spaghetti-Os with meatballs.

But I didn't just buy one can.

I bought two.

And I liked it.

I love to cook, and I cook - from scratch - most nights. And I love real Mexican food, whether prepared by me or, more usually, by a decent Mexican restaurant.

But I love Del Taco. LOVE it. We don't have it here, alas, so sometimes I make do with Taco Bell (which is OK) or Red Burrito (which is a bit better than Taco Bell), but a trip home isn't complete without at least one steak and egg breakfast burrito. I've tried to make them myself, and I've tried them from fancier Mexican joints (e.g. Qdoba), and they are just. not. the. same.

I like their sausage and egg biscuits better, but a McMuffin will do.

The Dutch "bear claw" is a lot different than the American bear claw!

Other guilty pleasures- I make really good cakes from scratch- frostings and all. But sometimes the best tasting cakes come from a grocery store bakery- with their sugary frostings made with shortning instead of butter. B.J.'s has some of the best cakes!

Every now and then, I have to pick up Crab Rangoon from the local Chinese restaurants. They're hardly authentic Chinese, but they're so good...

You can't make a good breakfeast burrito without qulaity green chile. Just can't be done.

Green chiles...::drifts off into a happy food dream::...

Ooh, that reminds me of another thing that I can't get unless I'm home or somewhere else out west: Pizza with green chiles on it. I love that, and it's not easy to find here in the Midwest. It's just not right that you can get pizza with pineapple on it...or barbecue sauce...but not green chiles.

Mmmm, Spaghetti-O's. With sliced franks. I have never outgrown them!

I just made this for my nephew over the weekend. I use Smoked Turkey franks and add herbs to the Spagetti O's....also parm cheese is very important throughout and also at the end. I'll also top it off with motzarella so by the time I'm done it doesn't really resemble spagettios anymore.

Whatever I make tastes good. And on the rare occassion it doesn't...one word: BUTTER.

Yeah. The pineapple thing I just don't get.

And the great thing about green chilies: you can put 'em on anything.

And You can find them in the Midwest if you know where to look. It's not easy, but doable.

You people! You won't let any shame remain hidden!

The sausage egg and cheese McGriddle is like a siren that lures me to the Golden Rocks of my doom anytime I get near a McDonalds before 11:00 a.m. :wah:
11? They stop serving breakfast at 10am around here. It often pisses me off.

Oh, I can find green chiles - canned and fresh. It was really hard when I first moved here, but the demographics have changed to such a degree that finding all kinds of Mexican food and Mexican food ingredients is now pretty easy. Yay!

It's specifically pizza with green chiles that I have so much trouble finding. And there for sure isn't any available in the little town I live in. I could make it myself, of course, but that wouldn't belong in a "food closet" thread.
