Kitchen Confessional: Good cooks come out as closeted McD's eaters

I ended up eating a Whopper with cheese for lunch, and I LIKED it. :p

Yumm.. Have not had one for years..

Any reference to a Whopper always reminds me ..., we were in Paris with friends, circa 1999, and with all the wonderful food around us, one of our group insisted on eating (just once) at the BK around the corner from our hotel just so he could actually order a "Royale with cheese".

I wish I could say that was the last time I was in a Burger King .... :o

I am generally considered by all who know me to be a fantastic cook. No one beats me when it comes to making pasta and I'm pretty much awesome all around. And because of that some people deem it strange that I strive very hard to make the perfect cheeseburger. Seriously, it's a quest.

And I also naturally love McD's cheeseburgers.

My sister picked up a Carvel ice cream cake for my brother-in-law's birthday. Can't wait for tonight.

(Though nowadays, I pick a Maggie Moo's cake for my own birthday!)

Tomorrow, I have to fast for a blood test. After it's done (if it's before 10:30), I'm treating myself to a McD's sausage biscuit. That's a very rare treat for me.

Every once in a while I like a good grilled cheese. Add a bowl of tomato basil soup, and you got yourself dinner or lunch.

And there some really great ways to make a grilled cheese a little more fancy. Use some premium bread and cheese and you got something that is more "gourmet".

A good tip: Use two cast iron pans.

Put them both on burners and get 'em nice and hot. Put the sandwich together in one and take the other and place it on top of the sandwich with something heavy (like a brick) inside.

Why anyone would spend money on a sandwich press...

Yep, I've done that. Got that from an episode of Good Eats. I love Alton Brown.

I love Alton Brown!

But, I'll bet even he has a few guilty secrets. I can just see him in one of his costumes, with the dark glasses, pulling up to the drive through at Jack in the Box or something.

I own a diner, and I enjoy an occasional trip to Taco Bell or BK.

I need to know where East "BF" New York is (can't seem to locate it on Google Maps), because I love Diners and Diner food! Especially breakfast. And pie. Cherry pie. And coffee.

Is this thread making anyone else hungry?

I'm a decent cook (I can follow direction pretty well :p) but I can't get enough Taco Bell... their Volcano Taco, Chalupas, and the little sauce packets with the random sayings. Good thing I don't live near one.

I love to cook, but sometimes can't help but go to this shit awful place called Red Burrito and get myself a massive greasy burrito that a Mexican hobo would probably sneer at.

I've been meaning to head there... it's the one on Commercial correct? Is it really that terrible???

*shock*

You filthy tart...

I stayed relatively chaste since I only had the burger; no fries.

I think that's almost allowed.

My favourite story about the poet T.S. Eliot is one told by the son of a family friend when he went to visit close to Good Friday and Eliot was carefully running experiments to discover the optimum grilling technique for perfect hot cross buns :)

I own a diner.

That does have a nice sound to it - are you still enjoying it?

The only thing I will eat at BK is the breakfast sandwiches, which I do enjoy. As for McD's, I don't eat there either, but in that case it's 'cuz their food is never HOT enough! If I could get a quarter pounder and have it be actually hot enough to eat, I'd go there more often.

So if I want a burger, I'll go to Runza - they have the best burgers and fries, and of course I love the Runza sandwiches themselves.

Not a food comment, but I notice you're from Abbotsford. We have a good friend who's from Abbotsford. Small world. He never told us there were any Trekkies there. :p

Fortunately, we were there for a week, so there were plenty of other meals (and wine) to help make up for his sacrilege. :p

actually one of the fun parts of the series where he traveled around the country looking for good eats was watching him chow down on all this diner food and deserts and then watch him outside doing pushups..

i do like taco bell but i also like to go to the more authentic places around too.

and a rotiers shake.. nmmy.
:)

I'm not sure "Foodie" is the right word for me, more like "Foodie Warrior." I love good food. I love to cook good food. I love to consume good food. I love to experiment with creating good food. And I like to seek out good food. The spaghetti and meatballs, something so simple, that I had last Friday at Lou Malnati's in Buffalo Grove, IL was absolutely exquisite.

The fish and chips at The Founders Arms on the southbank of the Thames in London is the best I've ever had.

And the BBQ pork roast I smoked up last week, blew everyone's minds.

Yet, I love a can of Spaghetti-O's with Kraft cheese slices and potato chips mixed in.

And I just munched down two Oscar Meyer hot dogs that I nuked and then put ketchup on.

I think I need to make something kick ass for dinner tomorrow night.

A little less on the gourmet side (to say the least), but a great way to make a grilled cheese sandwhich is to fry up some bacon first, put the bacon on the sandwhich, then grill it in the bacon grease. You need an hour's jog afterwords, sure, but I'll be damned if it isn't delicious.

Dammit, don't rub it in! I loved Carvel as a kid but you can't get it in these parts. I'd die for those crunchy little chocolate things they put around the bottom of the cake.
