Your DVD Collection

My parents recently had a Garage Sale and I liquidated a good portion of my DVD collection.

Some of my friends gave me a :wtf: but I don't really watch DVDs much these days and I needed the space ...for more books.

I made like $500. I know it's only a small percentage of what I paid for them, but I honestly really don't care and doubt I'll ever miss 'em.

I've gotten to the point where I'm kind of boggled by people who have these ridiculously huge movie collection. I mean, do people really watch all of those enough to justify owning them all?

It's not like music. You can pretty much listen to music while doing anything. With movies you have to sit down and watch them.

Simpsons, Futurama, Batman Cartoons, Indy Jones and Back to the Future. Those are the only ones I watch multiple times.

The others? No. They were mostly gifts, actually. This is why I rent most movies.

$11,000? That's enough to pay for Netflix for 70 years.

I'm gonna say that again in caps: SEVENTY YEARS.

How many of those disks did you ever watch more than twice. Be honest.

A great many of those DVDs in that $11K is in TV box sets. Which, yeah, many I have watched more than once. I like being entertained so I occasionaly put in a DVD and watch it. :) I've got much to choose from.

This is why, despite my many nerdy qualities, I'll never fit in 100% around here.

For 90% of the films and TV shows I watch, I have no desire to ever see them a 2nd time. It's a huge nerd-handicap, but there's nothing I can do about it.

(I understand it, though. I LOVE that 10% that I do re-watch. I've watched Back to the Future a hundred times, at least. I watched 'The Dark Knight' about 12 times in the last 3 months. I get that it's a great thing, but it's very rare for me.)

I would replace all of my Blu-Rays, and all of my standard DVDs that had anything to do with baseball. Those are essential. Beyond that, I don't know.

I'd probably replace only a few, essential titles, in my collection. But, to be honest, I'm already busy paring down what I own and looking to sell everything and begin upgrading to Blu-Ray within the next 2-3 years. And, given my economic situation, I doubt I'll have the income to spend on even those ambitions.

Why "upgrade"? Blue-Ray players can play standard DVDs. When I make the switch to Blue-Ray I plan I just buying new movies on it but not really replacing my collection.

To have certain titles in 1080P, at least on those that I know the transfer has been done properly. I wouldn't mind letting go of my theatrical cut disc of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan for the new Blu-Ray right now, but the other films have less then stellar transfers, so I'll wait on those. Some titles I won't upgrade, but most of those I'm busy selling on Amazon right now.

Just my favourite titles, not the stuff I didn't care for, was cheap and bought to try out etc. So about 50-75%.

A few of mine are autographed, so just replacing the movie isn't really the issue tho in those cases... :S

I upgrade all my DVDs as soon as their Blu-Ray versions come out. I figure, why let that HDTV and Blu-Ray player go to waste? The difference is like night and day, really.

I only buy "must-have" DVDs of things I'm very likely to re-watch multiple times. Otherwise, why own what you can rent?

The difference is like night and day when the transfer is done properly. The problem is, often enough, there's too much DNR or some other sort of cock up that doesn't make upgrading worth it, as a clearer transfer and a better disc is inevitably on the way. And, more to the point, I don't have a Blu-Ray player yet (bought into HD-DVD, and only because it was much, much cheaper at the time). And, unless the economy turns, I won't have one for quite some time.

How many of those disks did you ever watch more than twice. Be honest.
I went through a time where I pared it down to ONLY dvd's I have watched within that particular year, and sold the rest to pay for the remastered Trek sets. So I only have about 150 now.
I'd replace maybe half of them if it all was lost. Mainly all my Trek, Firefly, Dark Angel, some Buffy, Indy, Back To The Future, & key Jackie Chan flicks.

Word. I'm in the process of replacing my favourite films with the blu-ray releases and I'm having a great time rediscovering these films in glorious HD. It costs me a lot of cash, but cinema is my greatest passion so I consider it money well spent.

I generally watch AT LEAST one movie each day and I'm always working through some television series, so my dvd/blu-ray collection is a great investment.

I would replace most of them in the case of fire. I own a lot of cult movies that would be difficult/expensive to replace, but in other cases it would give me the opportunity to get superior editions.
