The origin of 1701-A

Or then "Commander, Starfleet" is different from "the CinC". It could be argued that the former is the top man of the entire organization, while Starfleet has a number of CinCs just like the USN does - say, one per each theater of operations (cf. the old CINCLANT vs. CINCPAC division). "The" CinC in ST would then be the CinC of the "Home Fleet" area of responsibility, or the Klingon front commander, or somesuch, and everybody would understand that this specific CinC would be in charge of this particular business.

Cartwright does act a bit subordinate to this CinC guy, but there's nothing truly explicit about their hierarchial relationship. Perhaps the CinC guy sits in the meetings and Cartwright does not because the latter is too highly positioned to bother?

^Which would be where the "Commander, Starfleet" and various subsidiary CinCs Timo suggested might come into play. :rommie:

You know what would be an intriguing twist? If the explosion on Praxis was engineered by the conspirators in the first place.

A poster at Wordforge wrote a fanfic retelling of STVI:TUC in which exactly that happened.

It was quite good.

I don't suppose there is a link to that.

Ah, but there is!

Just a thought here, but maybe the Yorktown ( or whatever ) was
another Constitution class starship from the same era as Enterprise
and was originally sheduled for decomissioning, reason being there was no point in upgrading all the systems and doing massive refits again if they were going to concentrate resources on Starfleets new baby the Excelsior class. Then in the wake of Kirk stealing the Enterprise various design flaws
become apparent in the next generation of starship. (And if Sulu got the Excelsior once it was sorted then it took another five odd years to get the bugs ironned out.) Starfleet decides to fall back on the reliable old warhorse the Constitution class. the Yorktown ( or whatever,) is hastily recommisioned as the NCC 1701-A and given to Kirk to command.

Kirk takes it for a quick spin round the block, and then the already planned refit to all the new tech that was designed for the Excelsior class begins in earnest explaining the bridge redesign between STIV and STV

the constitution class is then finally decommissioned once the Excesior class is finally sucessful and Enterprise A is replaced by Enterprise B

EDIT - Over on another topic Christopher Bennett has said the Harve Bennett has gone on record as saying that there is a six month shakedown cruise of the
Enterprise A prior to the refiting in TFF. if we take that literally, and it is a shakedown cruise then that means it has to be a new ship after all doesn't it?
