Yeah, Church's nacelles are a big improvement on the Phase II/TMP things.

So are the nacelles and nacellecaps on Eaves' -E, but I don't see much love thrown in his direction.
Because they're ugly compared to their immediate predecessor, the Probert design for the NCC-1701-D. Pretty simple to understand.

I've always hated the look of the Ent-D, but for some reason my stance has softened against it recently. I still don't like it, but it's not a serious hatred anymore.

The very back end of the refit nacelles always seemed a little too plain to my eye, but I guess that might just my subconscious assuming there should be some suggestion of exhaust/emission back there, even if the actual warp propulsion effect is being generated between the two inboard sections (as proposed by Abel's people but not implemented by Trumbull's.)
You know what I'd like to see? An Enterprise that looked like it was designed in the late 40s or the 50s--maybe even the 20s or 30s: an unvarnished saucer connected to an unvarnished cigar in turn connected to two blatant, Hugo Award-like rockets. In MJs exact configuration, of course.

Turn the Hugo Award rockets around so they're facing the wrong way (points to the rear) and you might actually have something, though I have a feeling that unvarnished popsicle sticks between the cigar and the nacelles might not fly.)

Personally, I always assumed they tapered the tail ends of the nacelles like that precisely to eliminate any possibility that anyone could assume there was an exhaust of any sort there.
The space ship in This Island Earth (sometime in the '50s) looks rather like the TOS Enterprise saucer from the side (it was teardrop shaped in plan though).
I recall seeing a picture from a 40's or 50's sci fi movie that had a small craft with nacelles exactly like the tos enterprise and left no doubt where MJ got his inspiration from, but of course I don't remember where I saw it or what movie it was, maybe Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers???
Define "exactly", please. Did it have the indention, or the scooped back? How close do you think it was? Just curious.
