Bill, absolutely great book. It was a nice change of pace from what we have had lately. I enjoy action as much as the next, but this type of introspection is a real treat. The characters all seemed to sound right in my head. Looking forward to your next book.

I got it in Forbidden Planet in London - I don't think it's on general release in the UK as yet.

Bill, I'm loving the book. Not quite finished, but a couple of things did jar me out of the story and I went aaaaaaarrrrrrgghh.

Joanna Faur is called an Ensign at one point, I believe when the Enterprise is setting course for the Andorian ships but I'm not a hundred percent sure, when elsewhere and previously she is called a Lieutenant.

Ternan and Barrile have their ranks switched before they beam down to Pacifica, Barrile called an Acting President and Ternan a Governor.

And when the EMH is transferred from the Enterprise to Pacifica, the very next page Crusher says that the ship can do without an EHM.

Other than that, I can't wait for your next outing. You just made it to the big leagues, buddy!

I haven't finished yet but so far I like it even though the writer hangs out in Hennipen County, I try to steer clear of those trouble makers (go Washington County!!).

I'm about 160 pages into it and so far it's great. I'm glad to see so much development for the new characters.

While waiting for everyone else to read the book and provide their comments, I can't help myself from nit-picking.

I found one odd, jarring note on page 284. This is when Beverly contacts Jean-Luc from Pacifica and the transmission comes through the bridge's main viewer. Just a page earlier, Bill has Picard say:

"Doctor," he said, carefully maintaining their professional association while on the bridge.

Then they have their conversation, in full view of everyone, and Picard decides to immediately lay in a course for Pacifica. At which point the text states:

Crusher smile at him again. "Now I remember why I fell in love with you."

"Nonsense," Picard said, putting on his most stern and sober face. "I'm merely living up to my obligations as a Starfleet officer."

Up to this point Beverly has been just as scrupulous as JLP - if not more so - about keeping their private life private, and yet all of a sudden she just blurts out an expression of her love in front of the entire bridge crew!

And no one says or thinks anything about it, including Picard himself.

My only defence in raising this is that I did say I was nit-picking.

When I was reading that part (page 284), I took it to mean that Picard would maintain decorum, as he always plans to do, but since the entire crew is aware that they are married, the little bit of back and forth is nothing out of the ordinary. He didn't start out the conversation by saying,"...Beverly, my darling! How goes the mission sugarplumb?". To do so may be construed as inappropriate. But Bev mentioning that she loved him just seemed natural. It wasn't a secret amongst the crew. And besides; It fits with Picard's MO to stay professional in front of the crew, for the crew's sake, but not Beverly's. She's not as hung up on it as Picard is. The fact that he played along and didn't seem perturbed is probably her influence. She tends to soften his rigidity somewhat...

Ha Ha...double entendres (said with Phil Ken Seben's voice )

Still haven't got it! Experiencing considerable "Losing the Peace" cravings. Hate geographical location. Hate shipping speeds. Hate all you lucky people who have read it so much .

I'd just chime in and say that I really enjoyed getting a sense of the Federation's larger domestic culture and how its reacting to the post-invasion crises. In particular, Picard's speech about the importance of unity and selflessness in the face of such extreme poverty was quite wonderful -- if only more politicians were to speak of that sort of thing in the present crises!

Of course, I'm wondering if Bacco will run for a second term. I guess she'll be committed to the rebuilding and continue to serve if she feels she has a responsibility to remain and finish any projects she's started, but I don't know if she'd really want another term after this one! There's "unexpected complications" and then there's "almost-apocalypse"...

I was actually joking . I know that there seems to be no VP in the Federation (I wonder who is second in line?). As far as Calhoun is concerned, I agree. I love reading about him as a Captain, but if he would make an awful politician. In fact, I believe PAD even addressed this in the NF series . I put him there to make it seem even more ridiculous . I love President Bacco and I hope she stays as President for the forseeable future. KRAD created quite the character when he made her ... (it was KRAD, wasn't it?)

It was indeed KRAD, and I agree he did a wonderful job with her character.
