Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously)

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

Having just re-read the Destiny Trilogy during the last weekend, I noticed a continuity error regarding the flute. When LaForge came to confront Picard about the Thallaron Weapon in his quarters in "Lost Souls" (p354), he sees Picard holding the flute. This occurred after the fire in the ready room, so it could not have been destroyed in it!

Umm... uhhhh... Picard replicated another flute to play for relaxation after the fire! Yeah, that's it. :shifty:

Speaking of continuity issues, GTTS has Picard and Crusher honeymooning at the LaBarre estate, but in LTP, we are told that while Marie (Picard's sister-in-law) was the first to send congratulations on their wedding, it is only now that Crusher and Marie meet for the first time. Considering that LaBarre is Marie's home, I wonder why she wouldn't have thought to at least meet and greet the newlyweds at home the first time round.

She was at a wine tasting. On Sherman's Planet. That's the ticket.

Wasn't Sherman's Planet exterminated by the Borg?

(BTW, am I the only one who had trouble not imagining the voice of the Borg as being like the Daleks' in reading Star Trek: Destiny? "We. Are. The. Borg. You. Will. Be. Ex. TER. Min. A. Ted.")

And gee, nobody's yet pointed out the discrepancy between ASD and the LtP epilogue that I put such effort into preparing to handwave away...

I hadn't noticed any discrepancy. Porque?

Maybe the flute was so badly damaged as to be unplayable, but he was unwilling to let go of it yet so he still treated it with care and put it back in its protective case.

Sherman's Planet was destroyed in Destiny. The honeymoon was half a year before Destiny.

Do you see now how easy it is to make these mistakes?!

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

I gotta disagree. Maybe I misunderstand, but when people say something like "Things that are nice to follow..." I wonder if they are really saying they want characterization cut to a minimum and the narrative to focus on action, action, action. Characterization isn't nice to follow fluff.

Authors need to be faithful to the established characterization of the established characters, but they need to create the new characters out of whole cloth. As readers, it's fair for us to decide which of those new characters work and which don't, but I don't find them distracting in any form.

Whether new or old characters, stuff happens to people, stuff that effects them deeply. Worf is certainly not the Worf of season one TNG. The authors are showing us a Picard who is behaving like a man in his seventies, and they are depicting the Picard-Crusher marriage in a realistic way. Dax is perhaps the most obvious example of an established character who has undergone significant development. Etc., etc.

Something like the Crusher flashbacks in LTP allow me to increase my understanding of that character, and provide a basis for her behavior in the novel.

Rather than bother me, all of that makes Trek compelling for me. The stories are rooted in the choices made by the characters.

I agree. I guess I didn't bring it across too well. I'm happy with character development and the odd changes. Obviously new Dax is different to old Dax, and that's cool, because in the next book she'll be a little bit newer Dax and a few things will change. It's this kind of thing that keeps me coming back and reading the series.

What I'm not a fan of is massive sudden changes all the time. Like 'poof' there goes another crew and any stories or chemistry they had. These changes make it hard to care about a character's future.

I'm nearly done with LtP, and I must say, it's a great read. After reading TrekMovie's review of it, I was prepared for it to go pretty slowly and be kinda bored, but I haven't been at all! Thank you again Mr. Leisner!

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

I got a kick out of name Osseo Bemidji for the Pacifica's Secretary of Interplanetary Affairs. Kind of fitting to name him after two cities in the "Land of 10,000 Lakes".
*snicker* Ever since I moved to Minnesota and heard the name "Bemidji", I thought it would be great as an alien name or race. In fact, most of the Selkies in the book have Minnesota-inspired names.
Uthdel Evelth's name is from the cities of Duluth and Eveleth, and Minha is from Minnehaha Falls State Park, where I initially wrote his first scene.
Wow, you guys actually have cool names. Most of ours are from other places, like Glendale, and Peoria, or just weird like Dead Skunk Creek, Bloody Bason, Table Mesa, or Tonto Verde. For those of you who don't speak Spanish the last two are translated to English as Table Table, and Stupid Green.

Stupid Green LOL! Wonder what was stupid about the green, unless it was an error... <G>< And Tonto's the only word I didn't already know.

^Excellent sleuthing on your part, Taran'atar. So I can now feel more hopeful that that the flute is safe.

Someone probably already answered this, but couldn't she have been away during the honeymoon to give them privacy? Maybe she went visiting or something.

Actually, given Spanish word order, Tonto Verde would be more like "Green Fool."

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

Good point, Christopher. I should've thought of that once it was translated.

Sorry about that, it's been years since my last Spanish class and all I remembered was the basic meanings of the words.

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

I really liked the book. It gave a good view of a post war society trying to find some sense of normalcy again.

I might be the only one to say this, but I liked Gliv. It was kind of funny to see a Tellarite that didn't take themselves so seriously.

And being that I live in Minnesota, I just loved the character Osseo Bemijdi.

Looking forward to your next book!

Gliv was great :bolian:. I loved that Enterprise featured the Tellarites, and after reading about one or two different Tellarites in Vanguard, it's nice to see some popping up in the TNG era timeline. The acerbic attitude is always funny to read.

Does anyone know where else in Treklit, if anywhere else, there are other Tellarites (other than Enterprise and Vanguard of course ;))? I don't know of any in the Voy-R or the DS9-R...

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

S.C.E. / CoE has a Tellarite as a regular character (Tev, the second officer) from Aftermath (IIRC) onward.

Allyn Gibson's S.C.E. entry Ring around the Sky is set on a Tellarite colony world.

Thanks Defcon. I've recently bought the first 6 SCE/COE collections in a sweet ebay deal, but I've yet to crack them open. Hopefully when i'm done with The Buried Age I can start the first book...

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

I'm glad to hear there's some Gliv love out there. :)

I actually considered, very early on in the planning process, using SCE's Tev for Bev's team, but when that turned out not to be doable, I decided to go the opposite way, and created Gliv as an "anti-Tev".

There's also Haaj, one of the counselling staff on the USS Titan. He's only a supporting character, not had a lot of screen time yet. But his two big scenes (in Orion's Hounds and Gods of Night) have been definite highlights.

And Gleer, the Tellarite representative on the Federation Council, had supporting roles in Unjoined, A Time to Heal and Articles of the Federation.

Thanks. I totally forgot about Haaj on the Titan. I remember the character, but I guess I forgot that he was a Tellarite. Those scenes where he purposfully pisses off Troi so she reveals more about what's bothering her in OaTS, make so much more sense now; and I can't believe I forgot about Gleer :alienblush:. AotF is one of my fav's...must read it again soon ;).

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

Finally finished LtP, and as I said before, great book! Question for Mr. Leisner though...
Did Miranda leave the Enterprise like for good? Or just until the next book or something?

An excellent question. Unfortunately, as I'm not writing the next book, I can't answer it, sorry.
