Did the Doctor like Peri?

Guy Gardener

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Well, Five liked everyone, but Six?

Two points come to mind form my recent viewings of old episodes, after the fact that his fist instinct was to kill her while he was being a born (How like a Dalek!) however that was resentment as much as bad temperament, but yes...

In Revelation of the Daleks, he loses his balance falls over, bumps his head and calls out to beautiful Sarah Jane for help. Now that could have been an honest mistake, that he did momentarily feel 6 hundred years younger for a few seconds, or maybe this Timelord did dearly wish powerfully that he had a certain more competent assistant at his side saving the day?

And secondsly, Captured by Rebel Scum, needing to prove that she is not some dread baddie in Mindwarp, Peri was able to name Joe Grant, though maybe she should have said Jo Jones, which just sounds odd like she's a circus monkey, from a black and white publicity still. How often did Six wax on laconically about all the other "young girls" he utterly heart feltedly missed to the pain of melancholy that he drilled Peri with flash cards about the dozens of firm ripe young ladies who had held his coat while he dispensed with Quarks and Autons during the previous 900 years? Do you think she could have IDed Polly or Sarah Kingdom?

Compare this excessive education with Rose blinking gobsmacked that she wasn't the first monkey he let rub against his leg when beautiful Sarah Jane was announcing that it was she who marked her territory first during School reunion? However it's not like beautiful Sarah Jane knew who Victoria (Oh? They met in Down Time did they?) was when she raided her wardrobe in Pyramids of Mars until the Doctor called her on it, though he did let the wife bog off with Jack's Squareness Gun... There must have been a fair deal of Recycling going on?

Isn't the calling out of "Sarah Jane" in The Mysterious Planet? And the naming of Jo Grant in Vengeance on Varos?

I rewatched Revelation of the Daleks a few months ago, and the sheer mutual dislike between the Doctor and Peri makes it nearly unwatchable. God, what a misjudged relationship.

That's why we have Big Finish; to give us good 6th Doctor and Peri stories.

(Well good 6th Doctor stories, period.)

Oh, I know. I just listened to The Reaping yesterday, and though it has a few flaws, its depiction of the sixth Doctor/Peri relationship is not one of them.

The Sarah Jane utterance was probably Mysterious planet, I Just watched a half a dozen in a row, but Vegeance of Varos was not one of the stories I just viewed and I don't think I have seen it since the 80s, besides, Mindwarp is the one with the portrait of Three in the throne room that's walled up because the Borat, sorry "Borrad" is rewriting the History books.

And yet it's clear in various of the "Trial of a Time Lord" episodes that he cares very much about what happens to Peri, grieves when he thinks she's been killed and is moved to hear she survived.

IMHO, the Sixth Doctor was the victim of some truly awful writing and sheer ineptitude on the part of JNT. I'm glad to hear that Colin Baker has redeemed the character in the audios.

Shoot, not Vengeance on Varos-- Timelash is what we're both actually thinking of.

I knew we'd get it all right someday.

When I was watching Resurrection of the Daleks, I was wondering if Bryant was hiding a pregnancy? because that snow suit she was kitted up in was awfully padded, I mean it does happen, and then they try to hide it on screen in plain sight all the time.

Although the character most certainly was not pregnant, but it did mean, that if all Six and Peri ever did inbetween saving the universe from Chaos sit back and eat cheese burgers, well, honestly that makes Mel about a million times more of a shock to the system with her exercise Bikes and carrot Juice, god save us all.

Going by some comments from Colin Baker that it was damn cold filming those exterior shots it's more likely that Bryant was wearing thermals to keep warm.

I liked to think of them like an old married couple. They squabble and fight, but really deep down care about each other.

I'm sure the Doc would've had no problem taking her home of they'd really hated each other.

I think it's made very clear in those stories that he does care for her.

I couldn't agree more.
