weighting of the JJverse

As far as I'm concerned, if they're going to run with the "JJ-verse," I hope that they abandon all pretense of it being related to Star Trek as it's always existed.
A full reboot would've sorted all that out and been all the better for it.

If "they" were serious about making the JJverse unique, then why talk about Khan in the sequel. Make it unique with a new villains, plots, etc. Or, is that to economically risky???

"They" were only talking about it to gauge fan reactions to the idea.

They were secretive the last film and were criticised for it. Now they can't even "talk" about possibilities for main guest characters for this one without criticism?

Expect Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt to appear in the sequel. Kirk and Hunt will team up to taken down the next baddie.

This a question primarily for TOS fans. We knew of the Mirror Universe through one episode, but no one made as much fuss over it.
How much does/will the alternate universe count for you, compared to the Prime universe we are most use to, especially TOS and its associated movies?
The Mirror universe was fun and interesting, but after the first revisit in DS9 they did it to death and I didn't care anymore.

After visiting the JJverse once I've absolutely no interest in ever revisiting it. This NuTrek carries no weight with me and counts for nothing as far as I'm concerned. It's just New Coke all over again.

At least they brought back the original recipe after the backlash. Not sure we'll be that lucky this time.

If we have to rely on "luck" for good aspects of the next movei, then we are in real trouble.
Wasn't New Coke ditched for the old formulation?

(it's clear that what happened to nu-Kirk is probably not the same as what happened to Shat-Kirk... after all, even if you assume that both are similar, "nu-Kirk" got a serious reprimand while "Shat-Kirk" got a commendation).

Actually "Shat-Kirk" got a commendation and "nu-Kirk" got a hearing that was interrupted by the Vulcan distress call that could have gone either way if it had finished.

Except in this case the backlash is coming from a vocal minority. Where as the product their complaining about has done better then they probably expected.

It counts as much as any one movie can count. As an example, I detest Nemesis, I hate what it did to the TNG series, and yet it still "counts." But it still only counts as one flick, and I have the rest of TNG's seven seasons and three flicks to enjoy.

I actually like the way they rebooted the franchise. The mirror in now way diminishes my enjoyment of TOS ... or, for that matter, TNG, DS9, etc. It's the nature of alternate universes to all be able to coexist. So, in my mind they do.

And, still, nuTrek is as yet just one flick. If it becomes a full-blown movie franchise in its own right, then I'll give it even more consideration.

Never heard that one before. In any event, New Coke wasn't outperforming all previous sales records for Coca-Cola, and JJTrek is. :techman:

Actually, Dennis.. New Coke did, for a few months.

And, right now, NuTrek isn't selling shit, with most of its merchandising well into the clearance bin. Everyone's moved on to Transformers, and prepping to move on from that to something else, just like I predicted.

I don't know if there is still a website documenting all the Coke machinations of the 80s, but I remember seeing something a few years ago that dovetailed with my recollection, which was was that NewCoke basically 'covered' the time when a slight ingredient switch in old Coke took place.

I had a few of my old cokes still stashed by the time they trotted 'old coke' back out again, and it did taste a lil different, a bit worse than original old coke. But the new old coke was still magnitudes better than the undrinkable NewCoke, which might as well have been Cragmont Imitation Strawberry in a warm can, which I rank at the bottom of soda tasting experience, since it almost managed to taint my sole theatrical viewing of THE OMEGA MAN in the mid 70s.

You know the one thing that annoys me about the New Coke comparison is the fact that personal opinion on it is considered fact. Which is a problem becuase not everyone has the same opinion.

Sorry, but Paramount and the licensees are very happy with the money rolling in from this movie. As long as profit drives the studio, this reboot rules Star Trek...until a new reboot is required to goose the proceeds again.

You should see what the dealers at conventions are getting for those Playmates toys, BTW - I'm glad I bought what I wanted at Toys-R-Us before the movie opened.

That said, CBS will probably always be able to dependably make some money by changing something-or-another on the TOS DVDs or Blu-Rays or whatever format is next and selling them to TOS fans...again.

New Coke was a failure. The public outcry was extreme. So much so that Coke brought back their "classic" formula (albeit with corn syrup instead of sugar). Trek XI was a success. It had a solid 9 week run in the theatres and made a ton of money and the DVD will bring in even more.
Paramount has already approved a sequel. The only outcry about NuTrek is from a vocal minority of purists who would hate anything new coming out of the Trek camp.

There is absolutely no way to please those people. OTOH millions of people who weren't fans of Star Trek are now checking it out because of this new film.

Comparing JJTrek to New Coke is just another dumb, useless analogy.

Just presenting my remembrances, not an annotated essay. Didn't figure we all needed to stick one of those IMO or 'your mileage may vary' type disclaimers on it.

You should. Your generalized opinions don't speak for any of us.

Your views of my posts are weigh so heavily on me that they can put a dirigible aloft. Thank god helium doesn't smell like methane.

Oh, please. Despite over 375 million dollars in world box office so far, this film must be a failure or God is dead.
