Well, long time regulars might know that I've been asking a lot about Babylon 5 and I've never really gotten around to watching it. Well, despite not having the DVDs, I'm still going to watch the series through other "legal" means such as Hulu, AOL, and TheWB.com. Of course the quality may not be as good but one advantage is I'm watching on a nice screen that I hooked up to the laptop.

I really have been confused on where I start the series so I decided I'm starting with the pilot and working my way through one season at a time. Then I may buy the movies, but as of now, it's just seasons 1-5 (Hopefully I get all of them).

Tonight I started this little endevor by watching The Gathering. Now, I've seen some of Babylon 5 before, especially the Sinclair years but for some reason I dropped off and now I can finally restart. As for this episode, It wasn't a bad premiere, and I kinda wish Tokashima wasn't replaced but somehow included with the new cast. I kinda liked her. Sinclair is someone I will have to get used to until Sharidon comes along but that's alright and Delenn, well, when does she get the hair. ;)

Anyway, it was a good start. Kind of routine, but I like those murder mystery episodes and this one had a few good moments, like the quiet scenes between Delenn and Sinclair in the Garden and the end scene with Sinclair putting the fake tracking device into G'Kar. :guffaw:

Still, I can't wait to get to the heart of this journey. I know the end quote of the series, and I know to get there this series was be really worth it. Who knows, if I love it, I might just get the DVDs.

Glad to hear it. Just know going in that this is more of an intellectual story than a purely entertaining program. Don't look for amazing action or Star Wars-y sequences...

I watched it for the first time a little over a year ago, and since then I've re-watched it twice (which I think is pretty impressive). Power through the first season (it's not bad, just kind of average) and you'll be fine.

I bought the 1st season about a month ago, and been watching a few episodes at a time whenever I get the chance. Have to say it's really great to watch, Londo and G'Kar being some of my favourite characters already.

"I'm cute, but in purple I'm stunning" That entire sequence has me laughing like a tickled witch. :guffaw:

I'm not sure if I'm going to talk about each episode or not, but I saw "Midnight on the Firing Line" tonight. I'm liking all these building blocks setting up this universe from the first two episodes. THe stuff from Londo and G'Kar have been really interesting and already you see the first seeds planted in the relationship of the two races, and their individual relationship. I love the scene where Londo is talking about how he is going to die in 20 years and think that is some fine forshadowing (Please no spoilers). Also, Sinclair didn't bother me as much in this one as the last one did. Even though I do wish something had stayed from the original pilot to this one...The Music. I actually liked the rocking theme of the first episode (especially the theme) and wish some of that had actually been kept. Nothing wrong with the current theme though.

Wow, I always forget that the version of The Gathering that's online is the original, not the revised edition for TNT. I much prefer the Special Edition, especially since it's got Tamlyn Tomita's original voice performance. (It had been re-dubbed in the original to a 'softer' tone.) The character moments were much stronger, too.

Great series, you should have a wonderful time.

This is like the 10,000th "I'm watching B5" thread in the past few weeks. Must be something in the water!

My favorite Londo line from "The Gathering":

"You're a security chief, shouldn't you be securing something?"

    And, of course, Garabaldi's response:

    "I am. I'm securing you."

From that first moment, I knew that I was going to like Londo.

While it is an intellectual story, I wouldn't go so far as to say don't look for good action sequences. Especially later in the series when the CGI gets better, there are some really great space battles that would rival anything from Star Wars. Just watched a couple episodes in season 3, and I forgot how exciting some of the action scenes were.

Now live action 'action' scenes, that's a different story...

I noticed that too. I'm sure JMS wonders where the hell these royalty checks are coming from. ;)

B5 always had action in it, that's one of the things I like about it. It was fast paced. Not to mention there were usually 3-4 stories running through each episode. Wouldn't there be some kind of act o' violence by the end of every act of any given episode?

Watching Babylon 5 seems to be the trendy thing to do this summer, haha. Glad to hear it, I have been inspired by all the recent threads here at the BBS myself and I've been watching my way through the series for the last 2 weeks, just started disc 2 of season 2...This is my 4th time through and I am loving it more than ever.

From that moment I knew I was going to love Garibaldi. Londo was like Stewart's Picard-the actor created him and fleshed him out by the time he uttered his first line.

    My favorite Londo quote:
"If you see something this big with eight legs coming your way, let me know. I have to kill it before it develops language skills."

Just saw Severed Dreams the other day. Damn that was a good show.

I too loved that entire exchange. I'm surprised we didn't get anything like that on DS9.
