TrekBBS and Friends

"Do you want to be my friend?" - Childhood greeting

This is an aspect of the TrekBBS (or any other message board) I don't understand. I haven't racked up any friends (except Too Much Fun). Do I want friends? Do I need them? How do I help them? How can they help me? I've been posting for years here but I don't know anything about this friend business. Is this like Facebook? Am I missing out on something?

I've been here since 2003 (my two year username evaporated) so I spend a lot of time here. If I know posters by name (there are many I could list) does that mean I should add them? Or do I have to like what they post? My instinct is the opposite. I welcome friends who challenge my opinion or disagree with me.

Help me fluff up my friend list so I can better understand. There's a puddin' pop in it for you. :techman:

I have never asked anyone to be my friend here, but quite a few people have asked to be mine. I generally accept them, but that's pretty much the end of it. I'm not really sure if there is anything you can DO with your friends at all.

Well, you can keep the pop, 'cause I don't like pudding anyway. But here's a tip: it's an individual thing. I only have people I like in my friends list, it's not very long and I don't expect it to be. It's not a popularity contest and it's not something you can advise others about.
Do what feels natural, it always works.

I have some people on my friendslist, and it's quite alright. But I have lots of people that I consider friends who arent on the friendslist too. It is just there.. I barely pay attention to it.

*BINGO*

At some point I added a few people - then I forgot all about this board feature.

The result is that I have an incomplete -at best- or -maybe even- false friendlist. I haven't been paying any attention to it in a long time...

Y'see, the kids, they listen to the rap music, which gives them the brain damage. With their hippin' and their hoppin', and their bippin', and their boppin'... so they don't know what the jazz is all about!

(Not Frink, but the same vocabulary I'd say)

The list means nothing. But it's fun sometimes to go to the friends lists of trolls and/or posters you don't like and take a snap shot of it because it says they have no friends. :)

When I like someone and I'm in the mood, I add them to my friends list. A few on there I actually do consider true friends. I don't turn down friend requests, either.

Shame some of us unpopular trolls purposefully reject friend requests because they don't see the point in the feature.

AFAIK the only point of the feature is that you can PM them all at once

There are plans to add additional features involving friends down the road at some point.

It would be nice if the Friends list gets used by the BBS somehow in the future. Depends on what the board owners have up their sleeves I guess.
