I'm assuming he maybe disembowelled himself at the last second and hurled the bomb away as he fell, so just got fried - but intact - in the fireball
Might explain the final image in the preview for Day 2...
Maybe this sort of format is the future of Torchwood and perhaps nuWho too - multi-part stories on consecutive nights with killer cliffhangers to keep the interest going... and yet ironically it's the sort of thing Doctor Who had been doing for decades before the 2005 reboot.
The BBC has the interested audience for this sort of thing now, so they can't not do this really. 
my mum watched it, I think that is more to do with the fact that she is one of those people for whom BBC One is a default channel, and if there is nothing else on, she will just watch BBC One whatever is on.
hopefully it gets the ratings it deserves.

I'd love more serial shows like this. Not necessarily Doctor Who, but more Sci-Fi would be great.
it certianly seems to work for Torchwood, and its great that they are finally getting Torchwood to work, not sure about Doctor Who however.

Just catching the repeat on BBC Three. The opening reminds me of the opening credits of LOST for some strange reason.

Gray is Jack's brother, who was accidentally abandoned by Jack as a child during an alien attack. Gray lived with the horror of the attack, was imprisoned and tortured, and years later found Jack and vowed revenge against him, blaming Jack for ruining his life. Gray eventually was defeated, sedated and kept in cold storage in the Hub.

Heh, if only Torchwood was as good as this right out the barn door and the lack of Chris Chibnall is keenly felt, but in a good way. 
As with The Next Generation and (to a lesser extent) Voyager, Torchwood took a pretty long time to become compulsive viewing and this run of episodes could easily be Torchwood's equivalent of "Yesterday's Enterprise" where it finally gets over most of its earlier creative hang ups, the cast gets more fleshed out, and there is a higher number of good to excellent episodes.
If the next four episodes are half as good as this evening's episode, for fuck's sake BBC, DON'T CANCEL IT!!!

I liked the first two seasons of Torchwood, despite the flaws, but this felt like the start of something special. Lots of good funny bits, some good creepy bits, some surprises, and good guest cast. Hope it stays this good.
I liked it. But it easy to set up something (resolution is where many shows fall apart).
But what I did like, was the scope of it, yet with a far more realistic (though still not very) nod to both acting, and atmosphere then Who (Sorry but I can't stand the acting in Who or the over the top antics, AARRGGHHH).
One of the problems with Torchwood from the get go, was that the teased a darker and more series look at this shared universe. Yet, they would never be consistent. Here at least so far, we see more character bits (which I like), more realistic interactions between the cast (for example last year the interactions about Ianto and Jack would be serious in one episode to way, way over the top the next). I would still like to see a better quality of acting (and it isn't the talent pool because Britain can mange very serious material). But the balance seems so far, to be a lot more even. I actually can't want for tomorrow. Its a B, and from me thats a great show for any of the Whoverse.

The bit with all the kids screaming together was way creepy. Smart of them to keep that out of the trailers.
