Our Generation...

Nardpuncher

Rear Admiral
I was thinking about what we all have when we're kids that we were crazy about.
I'm 36...so I had Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark as well as the Roger Moore 007 movies.

The thing is I still love those things (the Roger Moore 007s not so much) They still seem wonderful and I know that's why they're still important parts of pop culture to this day and will be for many years to come.
I'm wondering about other ages, perhaps younger than mine...what did you have? Sure you still could watch older stuff on VHS, but how do you look back on your shows from your youth?

See I'm the same age as you. So i remember queuing for Star Wars and Superman and trying to fly when i left the Cinema. I remember finding out Darth was Lukes dad and basically grew and formed in the late 70's and the whole of the 80's.

Those were cool times to grow up, okay there wasnt really a proper net or web back then but you went to a library to look things up, you taped stuff off the radio and you recorded films from the TV and paused/edited the adverts out so you could watch it again, remote free. We had a ferguson videostar with a remote control that was plugged in with a 2 foot wire. not very fricking remote.

Ahhh good days buddy. Jaws, close encounters, action man, no han shooting first and ET with guns.

*sigh*. I hate being grown up.

I had Star Wars(and it still gives me shivers remembering the original ads on tv), Micronauts(Time Traveler was my favorite), and 2 tv shows that stand out-the 6 Million Dollar Man and "a rag-tag, fugitive fleet".

So do I, which is why I never did. I love pretty much the same stuff as you guys, even though I'm older than you (I'm 39).

Same sigh heard here....I'm 37 and I feel the same way. The coolest thing in the world was having a taped show without the commercials in it! You knew you were watching a special tape then.

I never knew how much I would miss being a kid. Always outside in the great weather, running in the woods, going to the stream in the woods. Then going to a Convenience store for soda and candy. I must dream about doing that again everyday I am behind my computer at work....sigh...

32, and I remember fanzines and "underground" fancomics-- and more mature fare-- that were drawn in pencil, copied and bound by really shitty stapling. Fandom before we had a 24/7 news cycle and on demand-- more or less-- spoilers. Guys passing around bad dubs of rental tapes of sci-fi movies and anime. Star Wars movies were still an event to look forward too, something special that you saved up to go too for months just so you could be there on opening night.

In a lot of ways-- IMO-- it was more fun.

I imagine that twenty years from now today's kids will be looking back fondly at Harry Potter, the SPIDER-MAN movies, LOST, and TWILIGHT . . . .

I'm 39, and definitely Star Wars, original BSG (ah, the young Dirk Benedict :adore:) and Raiders were a HUGE part of my youth. So was Dr. Who--the Tom Baker years, but I was the only kid in my school who watched it.

I also remember, as I sit here at this BBS, that time when the only way I could get ANY scifi/fantasy news was scouring the bookstores for a copy of Starlog.

Now instead of monthly updates (which were already a month old when they were printed), I get daily updates on the internet from various sources.

and TWILIGHT . . . .

"a rag-tag, fugitive fleet".

Ah, another example of "the good old days", back before Ron Moore destroyed it with his "improvements".

Speak for yourself! :)

(I'm sorry. Even back in the good old days, I never understood what people saw in the original GALACTICA . . . .)

The laser pistols and those cool ships! Something about them really grabbed my eleven yr old heart and imagination!

I can see that. A lot depends on what age you're first exposed to something. (I have an irrational fondness for old Hammer horror movies which my girlfriend finds completely inexplicable.)

I was in college when the first BSG debuted so I was probably too old appreciate it on that level. It just seemed kind of dopey to me.

That's okay. I don't understand what people see in the New Galactica. I used to respect Ron Moore as a writer, but never again. If he ever tries to write for Star Trek again, I'll sue somebody, and then arrange an assasination.

Fuck it, I'll do the hit myself.

I'd rather see you write for Star Trek. I still respect your writing.

Just stay the hell away from New Galactica.

You are all so old:p
I remember talking about x-files buffy and the BBC version of pride and prejudice.
And i watched but did not talk about TNG DS9 and VOY

Egad you're old!;) jk

Yeah, I could see a more sophisticated view not being as enthused-it was pretty hokey stuff. But fun!
