Calvin & Hobbes

dance-hb.gif

One of my favorite strips of all time. In 1990, I wrote and composed The Musical Calvin and Hobbes for the stage. One of these days I'll approach Bill Watterson about getting the rights to produce it.

Watterson firmly believed in keeping the C&H in strip form only as he admired that form. Anything you see (outside of the anthologies) is non-licensed and illegal (t-shirts, window stickers, etc.)

But enough time has gone by since the end of the strip that I hope he'll be receptive to granting me the stage rights, especially if the background projections are his artwork.

Every time I see the image of Calvin peeing on a Chevy/Ford/GMC/whatever symbol, I die a little inside.

Anyone who has one of those is a total douche bag.

And the one with him humbly praying at a cross! It's actually vulgar.

Cool tribute site, man. :bolian:

Calvin & Hobbes
is my favorite comic strip, so of course I own both the "Complete Collection" and the "Tenth Anniversary Book." I also highly recommend checking out "Calvin and Hobbes: Sunday Pages, 1985-1995" because it includes more insights from Watterson about his work process and general thoughts about the strip.

I, too, die a little inside each time I see those stupid stickers on vehicles.

Yeah the stickers on vehicles are stupid because Waterson was so against merchandising C&H, but that old "BORGAFIED" T-Shirt is still awesome.

Totally agreed on both counts. What's the point?

That would be beyond awesome. It might help that Watterson has had his work displayed in galleries recently. Good luck. :techman:

One question:

I saw a C&H strip once where Calvin is doing his homework, and Hobbes wants to go play but Calvin won't listen, he's just intent on the school work. In the final panel, Hobbes reverts to being a stuffed toy because Calvin won't acknowledge him.

This was a fake, wasn't it? Meaning, it was never a real C&H strip?

I have all of the strips ever published, it's one of my all-time favourites. Very nice site. Well done. :techman:

Calvin & Hobbes was simply the best comic strip ever made. Few have even come close. I'm proud to say I have all the collections sitting next to my bed to this day. :)

I hope whatever Bill Watterson is up to these days is personally fulfilling enough to him to justify my continued sorrow at the absence of new Calvin & Hobbes. I know he felt constricted by the comic strip format, but after all this time he could have published a book or two, using any strip format he liked.

C'mon Bill - we love ya. Throw us a bone.

Thanks everybody, glad you like it.

Watterson is off painting. Watercolors I believe. He made enough money to do what he really wants to do. I read awhile back that everything he paints (mostly landscapes I think) gets thrown away. Apparently he read somewhere that your technique isn't really formed until you've done 500 or so. Could be BS but it sort of fits what we know about him, don't you think?

Good site man.

It's funny, I really like C&H, but I feel there's an underlying sadness, but nothing I can put my finger on.

I also thought it would have bene cool if he'd moved the strip on a little, and Calvin had a baby sister, who came to see Hobbes like Calvin, or even possibly a bit different, even though it was the same toy.

I dunno, maybe I just felt sorry for the parents! :D
