Doctor Who Audios - How to get a hold of them?

I know the Sixth Doctor always gets such a bad rap but as I watch Vengeance on Varos I'm reminded once more that he's really not so bad and that it was a real shame Colin Baker didn't get much of a chance to let his Doctor evolve.

I've heard time and again, though, that this actually does happen in his audios with a companion called Evelyn Smith. I've never listened to any of the Who audios and I'd love to start with his and move on to Eights (another Doctor who didn't get much air time).

Keep in mind I'm in the US, but what is the best way to find the audios? Are they worth the time and monetary investment?

Yeah, downloading is the way to go at Big Finish! They have this neat little bit where you can download just the first part of a story for .99 cents to see if you like it. If you want the rest, it's usually between $12 and $15 for the entire download. However, these aren't short stories, so it's definitely worth your time. The wife isn't a huge Who fan, but she loves listening to the audios with me on long road trips. We've really gotten to know Paul McGann's Doctor and Charly over the past few trips we've made... :techman:

Just to mention, though, I abhor the character Evelyn. She's a naggy, irritating old cow. Colin deserves better...

I prefer Bonnie Langford with Colin. Even more than with No 6 BF have done wonders with turning Mel into a good character.

I think Peri actually got worse in Big Finish. Of course, it's also to note that I can't actually see her cleavage in audio form, so that might be something as well. I think Charley is the only original BF companion I actually dig. I've heard about characters named Hex and new chick with McGann, and some Egyptian woman with Davison and all that. But, I really don't like any of them, save India Fisher as Charley (and even then, her character can become grating)...

You've heard about them and you trash them? That's sad.

For the record, the 5th Doctor, Peri, Erimem trio is hilarious when they get light-hearted stories to do. Peri, just as in the tv show, was much better with the 5th Doctor.

If you want physical copies of the stories, Alien Entertainment, WhoNA, and Mike's Comics are all good ways to go Stateside.

Bonnie does come to form, and Evelyn Smythe has popped off and the girl who has replaced her is just awesome beyond my words to carry... Hells there's even an adventure with 6 and Frobisher, but it's more Frobisher with 6 just appearing now and then for exposition.

Erimin. Hmmm? There was just something bland about her, despite the silliness of when ever she and 5 would bump into royalty that she would declare, "Oh, but I'm a Pharo don't you know?" Though I just crossed the viewing bridge between episodes 19 and 20, and in the arc of infinity the Doctors off hand remark about it taking him a hundred years to get around to doing some general maintenance on the monitor can leave one wondering exactly how long Nyssa's life span might be?

Hex, I am beginning to enjoy now that I get it that he's connected to some werewolf/vampire back story with 6, he's intent on getting a leg over with Ace and she just swots him gently to one side, and the behind the scenes where the actors seems to really be into the affair... I liked it how he says his friends keep trying to get the new stories off him when his comps show up in the mail. It made him seem invested.

I'm finally up to date more or less if you don't count some of the side projects. :)

I'm quite sure I dislike 5's new android buddy Amy, but I have no idea if she's staying on now that the key to time storyline is resolved.

When BF started their download system, I was on that bandwagon like a fly to a bug zapper! I've been getting the 8th Doctor stories exclusively and have been enjoying his adventures a lot (although the last one I got was the 5th Doctor one with Tegan, The Gathering). They're about half the price or less of the actual, physical CD and you don't have to wait for it to be shipped (aside from the short download time, of course!). :)

Circular Time indicates that Trakenites age much like human beings.

Sorry, wasn't trying to "trash" anyone. From the preview segments I've listened to, I just don't care to get to know any new "companion". I don't mind giving Paul a rotating cast of companions. But, I listen to past Doctors to get the group I knew. I know Janet Fielding won't record anything with Davison and Nyssa. But, I'd rather listen to something that doesn't fit into continuity, like Nyssa and Peri traveling together, than I would making them share time with a stranger like Erimen or Hex or any of the rest. Just my preference... :techman:

Well, I meant obviously besides that one. Plus, it's not Tegan and Nyssa together. Just "Whatever happened to Tegan?" (which was pretty decent, I have to say, if not slightly depressing)

8 and 6, my two favorite Docs, natually I love the audios.

Evelyn's fantastic! Start with Marion Conspiracy for her intro story with Doc 6. You won't be disapointed. Colin is amazing in the audios.

Start with Storm Warnings for McGann. Charley is awesome, kinda like a 1930's Sarah Jane.

Downloading from Big Finish is the best way to go. But the official BBC Dr. Who site has a few free ones you can listen to like Shada with McGann and Romana and a Cyberman one with 6/Eve.
