I am planning on running all the way through the series starting today. There are at least 50 episodes I have never seen or don't remember seeing, so this should be fun. I'll probably be limited to 1-2 episodes a day, so this should take me quite a while. Feel free to watch with me! Off to watch Encounter at Farpoint, Part 1!
I probably haven't seen this in 10 years or so, so I'm eager to meet the characters... again.
Encounter at Farpoint, Part One
Even though I've never been a big fan of the exterior look of the Enterprise-D, the reveal of the ship while the music plays is very impressive. Almost no time is wasted in explaining that Data is an android and Troi is telepathic. We have no time to meet the rest of the crew before we are introduced to the omnipotent Q. He is certainly an odd character. Worf's first one liner “Permission to clean up the bridge” comes from this episode. I wonder if Q was ever supposed to be a recurring character, or even a menacing one. Worf gets to announce that he is a Klingon for those fans or casual viewers who are confused. Fifteen minutes in we get to see the battle bridge and a man skirt. You can't beat that.
Maybe it's just me, but the TMP/TNG theme playing during the saucer separation was just plain weird. I had forgotten a lot about Tasha Yar, but I really like her character. She and Troi are polar opposites. Troi is reserved while Tasha is extremely passionate. Is this the only time Data uses his voice synthesizer? I can't recall any other instances of him imitating voices.I really like O'Brien. I wish they had kept him as a regular.
I seem to remember Riker being introduced much earlier the last time I watched this. It's over thirty minutes into the episode before he shows up. Riker eating the apple reminds me of Kirk and the apple during the Kobayashi Maru scene in the new movie. Wesley Crusher sure does have some ugly clothes. I hope if I'm still alive in the 23rd century, I won't have to wear crap like that.
Picard seems hard on Riker at first. I wonder if he's stressed out by this point, or if this is something he does to all of his first officers to keep them on edge. Riker's line “He calls that a little adventure?” after watching the Q video is funny too. I like humor. Humor can be well done in Star Trek without being over the top and this is another example. No fish petting, no flotation device, etc... Subtle is good.
