TNG Rewatch Thread

Starbreaker

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
I am planning on running all the way through the series starting today. There are at least 50 episodes I have never seen or don't remember seeing, so this should be fun. I'll probably be limited to 1-2 episodes a day, so this should take me quite a while. Feel free to watch with me! Off to watch Encounter at Farpoint, Part 1!

I probably haven't seen this in 10 years or so, so I'm eager to meet the characters... again.

Encounter at Farpoint, Part One

Even though I've never been a big fan of the exterior look of the Enterprise-D, the reveal of the ship while the music plays is very impressive. Almost no time is wasted in explaining that Data is an android and Troi is telepathic. We have no time to meet the rest of the crew before we are introduced to the omnipotent Q. He is certainly an odd character. Worf's first one liner “Permission to clean up the bridge” comes from this episode. I wonder if Q was ever supposed to be a recurring character, or even a menacing one. Worf gets to announce that he is a Klingon for those fans or casual viewers who are confused. Fifteen minutes in we get to see the battle bridge and a man skirt. You can't beat that.
Maybe it's just me, but the TMP/TNG theme playing during the saucer separation was just plain weird. I had forgotten a lot about Tasha Yar, but I really like her character. She and Troi are polar opposites. Troi is reserved while Tasha is extremely passionate. Is this the only time Data uses his voice synthesizer? I can't recall any other instances of him imitating voices.I really like O'Brien. I wish they had kept him as a regular.
I seem to remember Riker being introduced much earlier the last time I watched this. It's over thirty minutes into the episode before he shows up. Riker eating the apple reminds me of Kirk and the apple during the Kobayashi Maru scene in the new movie. Wesley Crusher sure does have some ugly clothes. I hope if I'm still alive in the 23rd century, I won't have to wear crap like that.
Picard seems hard on Riker at first. I wonder if he's stressed out by this point, or if this is something he does to all of his first officers to keep them on edge. Riker's line “He calls that a little adventure?” after watching the Q video is funny too. I like humor. Humor can be well done in Star Trek without being over the top and this is another example. No fish petting, no flotation device, etc... Subtle is good.

I got sucked into watching several episodes tonight. This show is so addictive.

Encounter at Farpoint, Part Two

I didn't remember that Geordi's VISOR actually gave him physical pain. Once again, I really liked the musical cues in the pilot, except for the scene where Data is talking to McCoy. That scoring was beyond cheesy. The first half of the episode is a lot better than the second half, but there are several memorable moments such as Data and Riker in the holodeck. This is a much better pilot than I remember.

Grade: B

The Naked Now

I went into this episode thinking I had never seen it before, but I had. Wesley dicking around in engineering really makes The Naked Now. The only thing I didn't like about this episode was how quickly Crusher threw herself at Picard. It's only the second episode! This was very risky of them to do this episode so soon. And it's obviously a rehash of Naked Time, but they handled it in an interesting way. I think it's very humorous and when taken as such, it's a good episode.

Grade - A-

Code of Honor

Okay, where do I start? Yareena. Sigh... There seems to have been a lot of behind the scenes drama on this one. Apparently the racist director was fired mid-shoot, according to Wil Wheaton. His review of the episode is hilarious, by the way. The Enterprise is in the middle of a crisis and Wesley comes in to sit at Ops. Again, the name Yareena. Really original.

Grade: C

The Last Outpost: I enjoyed the Chinese fingertrap scene, and that's about it. This is the worst of the lot so far. The Ferengi are goofy and the episode is pretty unmemorable.

Grade: C-

I always quite liked The Last Outpost. Though the introduction of the Ferengi is... odd. Considering they were supposed to be the "big villans" who would replace the Klingons. Not sure what made them think that having the screaming at thunder would acomplish that. And I, for one, didn't like the Chinese Finger Trap scene(s).

You're not alone with Code of Honor very meh episode.

The Ferengi were the weakest element of the episode...I liked everything else!!! Loved the T'Kon Empire...loved the 3d graphics, loved the Planet Hell set.

I look forward to reading your thoughts Starbreaker. I've been going through DS9 a lot lately, mixed with some TNG here and there so in terms of rewatching the whole series, I'm probably not going to do that at this point.

Encounter at Farpoint is terrible. When it wasn't boring, it was irritating. Thank goodness Star Trek didn't die there and then, because I wouldn't have been surprised if it had.

Funniest part of Farpoint for me is Picard forshadowing the Ferengi. "Let's hope they find you as tasty at they did their past associates." Oooooh, the Ferengi sound scaaaaary!

Where No One Has Gone Before

The Good:

Props to Diane Duane. This is a helluva story.
Moving Wesley from 'Whizkid' to 'Acting Ensign'

The Bad:
Ugh.. I hated Kosinski. I'm surprised Picard didn't send him out the airlock. I think he wouldn't if this wasn't one of the first few missions. The best episode so far.

Grade: A (a lot better than I remembered)

Lonely Among Us -

The delegates aboard the ship were much more interesting than the creature that inhabited the ship and made Picard act unlike himself for the second time this season. There's nothing bad about the episode, but nothing memorable either.

B-

Justice:

Starfleet doesn't lie!! Why did Picard break the Prime Directive by going to visit these people? Guess they didn't have that one thought through. As a criminal justice major, the fact that all crimes are punishable by death is really stupid. These hornballs are a joke.

C-

The Battle:

Picard doesn't act like himself for the... third time this season! The idea behind this episode was pretty cool, but I don't think it pays off in the end.

Grade: C+

It's possible that the Edo had knowledge of space-faring life so, while they didn't have warp-drive, it didn't break the PD to visit them.

Hide and Q is a really good episode. Except... who doesn't get to act like themselves in this episode? Riker!

Patrick Stewart and Majel Barrett are great in Haven. This isn't a particular exciting story, but it's a nice character piece.

I just got through the dinner scene. These are some great performances. Majel truly was a great actress.

Haven - C
The Big Goodbye - B-
Datalore - A
Angel One - B
11001001 - A
Too Short a Season - B
When the Bough Breaks - D
Home Soil - A
Coming of Age - A
Heart of Glory - B
The Arsenal of Freedom - D
Symbiosis - B-

Rewatched "When The Bough Breaks" last night.

God, that had to be the worst episode of the first season. Kids as the central characters in a episode is a bad premise to start, but with the exception of Jerry Hardin, the rest of the Aldeans seem like a race of creepy child molesters.

Skin of Evil - B
We'll Always Have Paris - A
Conspiracy - A
The Neutral Zone - A
The Child - B (the change from S1 to S2 is more dramatic than I remember)

When the Bough Breaks is terrible. The crew nor the kids seems concerned they were kidnapped. :wtf:
