Sequel to Star Trek 2009

I'd like to see the Romulans again. In both films dealing with them, they were represented by weird villains uncharacteristic of the Romulan Star Empire (Shinzon and Nero). So I'd like to see the 'real' Romulans for a change. It would also be a logical follow-up to the first film because they will most likely be blamed for the destruction of Vulcan.
The consequences of Vulcan's destruction should be explored, too.

I'd like to see a real Sci-Fi movie for a change, too, either using a scientific concept/idea or at least be more concerned with exploration.

I think a sequel has to move into a new direction, but if we are to go back to the well, so to speak, let's most definitely not do Khan again. He’s been done and he’s been done well. I think that Gary Mitchell's story could be the way to go, but tell it a little bit differently. Let's get back to the story of seeking out new life and new civilizations.

Basically there’s an A and B story. The A story is the Enterprise going to examine a device deep in space that is emanating a tremendous amount of energy. Starfleet wants to know if it’s a threat. Gary Mitchell, who’s serving as first officer while Spock’s away (see the B story), is connected to this device in some way and begins to show signs of some sort of an alien lifeform. He starts to become almost God-like in his abilities and Kirk must decide whether or not to kill his friend or allow him to solve the mystery of the device which Gary is inexplicably drawn to. I’m thinking Carol Marcus will somehow be involved in the A-plot as well and if I don’t bring Dehner into the story will take somewhat of her role. Kirk and Mitchell will go head to head and eventually Gary almost kills Jim, but not before Kirk reignites a spark of humanity in him.

The story flips back and forth between the present and Kirk and Mitchell’s growing friendship at the Academy where we discover that Mitchell saved Kirk’s life on a training mission in a nebula, but also picked up what turned him all God-like too. Also, Carol/Dehner will be on this mission as well. If it is Carol, she will be a love interest between both Kirk and Gary.

The B-plot involves Spock and McCoy go to New Vulcan (or whatever it may be called) as Spock (who has ended his relationship with Uhura) has been downright emotional from time to time. Sarek reveals that Spock is going through Pon Farr, but with T’Pring one of the casualties from Vulcan, he needs to find relief elsewhere. He manages to deal with it temporarily but knows that it may come back. This plot serves the purpose of showing what happened to the Vulcan society while at the same time getting Spock out of the way so the Mitchell plot can go forward.

Somehow the two stories are intertwined (if I bring Dehner into the story, she’ll be trying to psychoanalyze Spock before she goes all silver-eyed). To keep a real villain in the story, the Klingons will also be interested in this device and while Kirk, Spock, Mitchell and Carol/Dehner are aboard the device at the end unraveling the puzzles, Sulu will be commanding the Enterprise fighting off Kor and the Klingons. In the end, Kor escapes, Mitchell is overwhelmed by the power of the device and dies, but manages to release Carol/Dehner and leaves Kirk with coordinates to visit, where he’ll find something wonderful. Spock finds what he’s looking for (a la TMP) and is free of Ponn Farr for the time being. They return to Earth and there is a funeral for Gary. Kirk talks to Pike about going to the coordinates that Gary gave them and Pike gives the go ahead for Kirk to go, which will take them beyond the galaxy’s edge and sets up a third film.

It’s pretty loose right now but that’s because I just thought of the story last night. It may be smaller in scope but it has the potential to have aspects of Star Trek that would bring old fans back into the fold after the first one, particularly with the focus on the “brave new worlds” aspect of Trek. Plus, honestly, I’m really tired of the “threat against Earth and the Federation.”

I imagine the second film will probably be nothing like this, so I think I might write a fanfic instead. :)

Dennis: how do you know that? Of course, I don't know if they will go back to the original timeline either, but you can keep guessing right? Keep optimistic.

The same way I "know" that the producers of the James Bond movies won't dump Daniel Craig for Roger Moore. They changed all of these things for a reason, and it wasn't so that they could shuttle back and forth between the path that has generated over 200 million dollars worldwide in the last eleven days and the continuity that had been run into the ground by 2005.

Bring in 2 villains one to oppose Spock and one to oppose Kirk. A pissed off Sybok angry at the Federations inability to protect Vulcan will be Spocks and Khan will be Kirks.

No more Khan! Jeeze louise, this is the same stifled un creativity that made TNG-era Trek so boring.

"I can't think of anything."

"Well, let's just copy an old story."

A ST: XII with Khan would have to be Space Seed 2.0. Space Seed was nowhere near as good as TWOK.

Sure, a well-done Khan story could be good, but - it would simply be easier, more original and more liberating for the writers to come up with something new.

For Sybok to appear again you would have to have a writer or producer somewhere who wanted to see Sybok again - for any reason.

Thank god, this will never be the case. Sybok will return the next time Janeway and Paris mutate into lizards.

"The writers must also decide who the potential villain will be or what the heroes must overcome in Star Trek XII. "Two things," said Orci. "One is, we have had questions about the debate sort of between the exploration sci-fi plot where the unknown and nature itself is somehow an adversary (my italics), or the villain model. So that's an active discussion we're having right now."

Is anyone else excited by the possibility that the next film may actually, gasp, deal with deep space exploration rather than just another shoot em up? I know I am and by the way I like shoot em up stories but it would be good to see them carrying out their mission to explore strange new worlds.

Re: Yeoman Janice Rand possibly in STXII

co-writer Alex Kurtzman tell io9 the next film could feature one of Trek's most iconic women.
Yeoman Janice Rand

Does the word "iconic" actually mean anything at this point? Does it properly apply to recurring characters in a few episodes of an old TV series who fans of that series happen to like a lot?

Re: Yeoman Janice Rand possibly in STXII

Yeah, I wouldn't call Yeoman Rand iconic. It would be nice to see her though along with Nurse Chapel (who did get a mention in the new flick). They probably feel as if they need more than one female character in the movie. Why not let it be Rand?

I am. And I know that it would lead to a TV series after the next sequel or two...

Whew that's a relief. For a second there I thought it was just me. Maybe someone ought to do a poll on this to see what the fans preference is.

It'll only turn Spock into a whiny emo now that Vulcan is gone.

I'll just stick to watching any future rebooted films on DVD.

I thought it was all about going where no-one has gone before, not reimagining everything, or doing a 'brat' version of everything?

Star Trek has to take a lead in predicting the future, which is what science fiction is about, as there is nothing else as good as Star Trek in doing that.

They should also employ someone to stand behind every cinema seat, to whack the viewer over the head with a rolled up newspaper, every time the 'message of the film ' is mentioned.
