Sequel to Star Trek 2009

As a long time fan of the Star Trek franchise I was surprised by how much I loved the new film. It was a very fun rebirth of Trek, but it was not perfect.

I think the main flaws of the film come from a script level and could have been fixed with one more rewrite, as this movie was being done during the writers strike it is possible that the writers simply did not get a chance to tidy up the script and remove some of the flaws/ contrivances.

This is a thread for us fans to express what direction we want to see the sequel go.

The current rumor on the internet seems to be that the next film will feature the return of Khan, a feature-length re-imagining of "Space Seed" I suppose, and while this would be fun to see I think it is important that the new franchise does something new.

Space: the final frontier. These are the continuing voyages of the starship Enterprise. Her ongoing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life-forms and new civilizations; to boldly go where no one has gone before.

I would personally like the next film to focus on exploration, possibly open similar to "The Corbomite Maneuver" with the crew of the Enterprise exploring a region of space previously unexplored and making Star-maps of the region.

And whether the film goes on from there to introduce Khan or decides to have the Borg show up, or goes in an entirely fresh direction, I think it is important that the next film focus more on character and for it to aspire to be a more cerebral film than the current one.

As you are also fans, what are your ideas for the sequel and what of this film would you like to be corrected in a future film?

The script was completed well in advance of the writer's strike. The only frustration expressed by the director with the writer's strike was not being able to add a line that he thought would be good to one scene during shooting.

Looking at the weekend numbers, a sequel is surely on the way and possibly a trilogy with this crew. But since we're in an alternate timeline now--an alternative universe STAR TREK--I wonder if the original timeline will be restored at the end of the third one? I had a good time in this movie, really appreciated the humor and the tongue-in-cheek nature of the proceedings. But it's not "our" STAR TREK universe. We departed from Roddenberry's dimension the moment the Nerada arrived in the past (basically, Scene 1).

I'm thus conflicted. I want to keep the humor, the action and the fun, but I'd like to restore Vulcan and the original timeline. We should be able to have our TREK universe and have fun in it, too.

Well we still do have our Trek universe. We have 40 years worth of shows and movies devoted to that timeline. The writers specifically created an alternate timeline in order to be able to create new and original stories and not be dictated by what came before, something that kept the Prequel Trilogy from truly shining (not the only thing, but that's another story altogether).

This is really simple...they will find kirk a real good villain. Thats it..thats all they will do. Kirk needs a personal villain ala Khan...

People,

Personally, I want to see the Klingons again. I think Kirk needs a Klingon foil, like how Dukat was Sisko's recurring nemesis. Establish that Kirk and the Klingon captain have had dealings before.

I also would like to see the Andorians in this new timeline. I would love to see them add a security chief to the cast, an Andorian woman. Failing that, make Sulu the security chief who doubles as the helmsman, an homage to Mirror, Mirror.

Name him Kruge, Kor or Chang and we're set.

How about young Spock tries to stop Spock Prime from attempting to restore the timeline because he doesn't want to loose Uhura or something like that?

Here, here! I so agree with this statement! I agree-this movie isn't "our" Star Trek universe..it's an alternate reality! And I also want the timeline restored in the third trilogy(if it is made, which I'm sure it will be). And I also want more exploration. I thought that this movie had THE BEST opening scene of any movie I have seen before. The action sequences were just downright spectacular!

I hope they establish, finally, that Klingons use the blood of their slain enemies as sexual lubricant.

Jim Steele: say what?! :wtf: What on earth??
Dennis: how do you know that? Of course, I don't know if they will go back to the original timeline either, but you can keep guessing right? Keep optimistic.

i don't know if Khan is the way to go, but if they could find someone to really play the character well then go for it, you know the 2nd film could be Space Seed and maybe the final scenes are the start of the follow up
