Old Fans, their fears.

It's a myth that "old fans" don't like the movie. We do; there was already a thread on this.

QFT - 'old fan' (46 years old - saw Star Trek first run on NBC) here; and I LOVED the film. It wasn't perfect, but hell, neither was TOS. (And BTW, for me, TOS is STILL the #1 series of 'the franchise' IMO).

Transformers and XI both fall under the eminently disposable umbrella. Fun but not something I would get invested in.

This is where I am as well. It seemed like mindless, popcorn, slam-bam, lens flare, flashy light, summer eye candy. It was fun (even with a genocide in it), but thats about it.

Count me among the OS fans who liked the new movie. I've been watching since the very first reboot when they cast all those animated people instead of real actors, but I didn't mind then and I don't mind now. I would like to see them tell a story with a little more depth next time though.

Regarding the "old fans" thing, I can only relate my mother's opinion - she's been a fan since September 1966, and the first thing she did after seeing the new movie was walk across the hall to the next theater and see it again. After seeing it for a third time, she told me, "This is the movie I've been waiting for since 1970."

Yes! STXI was just what I'd been hoping for since 1970. I went out of the theater May 9th in a blissful daze and if I hadn't been meeting friends for lunch I'd have gone again the same day.

Random mode on:

That video was done by T'Pau...and yes, they named themselves after THAT T'Pau. Mainstream the Trek nerd!

Dang. There must be a lot of us old farts out there. Ben Gay and Preparation H are missing out not buying ad space on this BBS.

You can't get an older school fan than me, and I loved the movie 15 times so far.

Oh! Also, in the fifteen times I've seen the film, the average age of the people in the theater was oldish. I'm 51, and most of the people were around my age, with many older - and many of them had obviously seen the movie multiple times.

:guffaw:

Those are definitely the father's medications; we do things that require two pages of disclaimers.

There are a lot, yep, and not all of them even post in this forum. Just for grins, check out this currently-running GTD poll on TrekBBS demographics. I seem to recall the distribution running a lot more heavily to the twenty-somethings a few years ago than is being indicated now.

M', "and older"

Most people are still fallling between the 18 and 32 age ranges....I'm glad about that. My nephew told me that kids were talking about Trek at school and the two kids were arguing which was better...TOS or Next Gen....ah that just warmed up this old crusy stone cold heart of mine.

While I'm Still trying to sort out how I feel about the movie, and a whole lot of it isn't positive, I think I can explain some of the trepidations some fans (old or young) have about it. With a tastey metaphor!
I get what you're saying, but I think one point of disconnect is that, for most fans, this moment came long ago, and we've had years to adjust to it. For many it came with TNG, Star Trek without Kirk, Spock, and McCoy - even many people who eventually grew to like TNG had that initial "WTF? That's not Trek!" reaction. For some it was DS9, Star Trek without a starship. For some it was the blandness of TMP, or the militarism of TWOK, or the anachronisms in ENT, or Kirk's death in Generations, or the general awfulness of the last two TNG movies. For me personally, it was Voyager, the first Trek series I really didn't like - I'd been watching Star Trek since before I could remember, thanks to my aforementioned mother, and after three series and seven movies, it was a bit of a shock to the system that all of a sudden Star Trek sucked.

Trek has experienced many "endings" as well - whether it was the barren desert of the 70s, or the differences in the movies, or TUC, or Kirk's death in Generations, or the shift to TNG-only movies, most of us TOS fans realized that TOS was over. After INS failed to impress, and the comeback effort was the limp noodle of Nemesis, most of us TNG fans realized that TNG was over. Most DS9 and VOY fans knew those series were never jumping ot the big screen. After INS, NEM, and ENT, Trek as a whole was as dead as it's been since the 70s.

Most of us have adjusted to these changes. Some people ignore the new as not "real" Trek like the old stuff they prefer. Most of us simply expanded our definition of "real" Trek. The definition of Trek expanded to include stories about getting older instead of stories about young derring-do, to include stories without the original crew, to include stories not based on a ship, to include things that are mutually inconsistant and yet still both Trek. Now Trek has expanded to include stories based in alternate timelines. This may be the biggest fundamental change in Trek since the premiere of TNG; it's understandable that some people have a problem adjusting to it.

But whether it's grape or lemon-lime, it's still mostly water and high fructose corn syrup, it's still sweet and fizzy and cold and refreshing.

I think one advantage some fans have is if they read the books; the books have a variety of new characters that readers come to like.

Regarding the age poll, it's almost 50-50 split between under 33 and over 33.

The real fears of the old fans going into Star Trek?

"Should I get that golden butter crap on the popcorn, or am I going to regret it?"

"How can I be sure the babysitter isn't a crackhead?"

"I wonder where the theater gets seats like this. I'd love one for the den."

I'm a old fan of TOS but also love this new trek dont have a problem with it at all ,as i've said before its about kirk and crew ,and how they tell the story that counts.Plus if it keeps to gene's idea that we as humans can work together then i dont have a problem with nutrek.

I, a first generation fan, do not understand the binary thinking that some fans have about whether ST09 is "real" or not. What is this "either/or" thinking?

Where is the infinite diversity in infinite combinations mindset? To me, Original Series Trek and ST09 are not an "either/or" choice. Instead, it's an "and": Original Series and ST09 are Trek. The essences of each have been combined differently thanks to different events in each timeline, but they are both Trek.

I love them both -- and that's what I got to say about that!

I should also add that as one of the original fans of TOS, not only did I love this movie, but I loved TNG, too. It took me a while to get into DS9, but I began to like it in S3. I just liked Voyager, but can't think of many episodes that come close to my "favorites" list. Enterprise wasn't Star Trek, really, until S4 minus the series finale (which B&B should be embarrassed about ever thinking it belonged on screen).
