Actors' Hat Tricks

Can't believe this wasn't mentioned:

Christian Bale
1. Batman/Bruce Wayne (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight)
2. John Connor (Terminator: Salvation)
3. Patrick Bateman (American Psycho)

He only played Patrick Bateman once, so that doesn't count. Terminator will count if and when he plays the part for a second time.

This was the OP's question:

How many actors can we find who were uber successful as three different TV/Movie franchise characters?

He didn't say anything about them having to play each character more than once. They just have to be well known.

See my above post.
I saw it, but you're still missing the point. The OP is after franchises and/or TV series where a star has played the same character on an ongoing basis. Playing the character once doesn't count, regardless of whether or not there have been sequels. That's been clarified in the discussion.

Runaway train never going back
Wrong way on a one way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here no there

Levar Burton
Kunta Kinte (Roots)
Himself (Reading Rainbow)
Geordi LaForge (Star Trek: TNG)

Kelsey Grammar
Dr. Fraiser Crane (Cheers)
Dr. Fraiser Crane (Fraiser) - I know, but they're really two different characters, sort of.
Sideshow Bob (The Simpsons)

The fact that so many people are kind of stretching with a lot of these suggestions just proves that, really, there aren't many actors who have managed this hat trick.

Managing to star in three successful franchises over the course of your career is quite rare.

(Hell, I was probably pushing it with Buster Crabbe. Did he play Tarzan more than once?)

You are exactly right, Greg Cox, very few actor's really have THREE iconic roles.

James Garner has always been a favorite, Bret Maverick and James Rockford are two fun roles. He's done some incredible movie roles...but he don't have a third that makes the hat trick...one offs don't do it.

Wow, there are a lot of stretches in this. Honestly, I would say only the following actors have really done three iconic roles (although I'm sure I've missed a few obvious ones):

William Shatner
Bill Bixby
Michael Landon
Christopher Lee
Harrison Ford (although even this is a small stretch since other actors played Ryan before and after him)
Michael J. Fox
Mike Myers

I really want to add people like Christopher Lloyd (Fester is pushing it), Patrick Stewart (Sejanus wasn't that important of a role in I, Claudius as Livia or Augustus), or Ian McKellen (no real strong third character like James Garner or Clint Eastwood).

Levar Burton
Kunta Kinte (Roots)
Himself (Reading Rainbow)
Geordi LaForge (Star Trek: TNG)

Damnit, that's who I was going to say.

You could also add Kwame from Captain Planet as a fourth, but those three are definitely higher (unless someone wants to give crap about Reading Rainbow).

Based on some logic in this thread, Kevin Bacon should could since he was in the first Friday the 13th. That's spun tons of sequels there.

I mentioned Vin Diesel because he's got three pretty big franchises under his belt. The only stretch is that his next xXx movie is still in development.

I don't think that matters. Batman absolutely counts for Christian Bale and Obi Wan Kenobi counts for Ewan McGregor despite the fact that other actors played those roles before them. The same goes for the Bond actors who followed after Sean Connery.
(no real strong third character like James Garner or Clint Eastwood).
I take it you don't see the Man with No Name as a character for Eastwood since that was more of a marketing approach?
