Now That Some Time Has Past....

I think I can confidently say that Star Trek XI is the best Trek film ever made.

It's really no contest.

But, I'll go further.

Star Trek is probably the best version of Trek ever made and has the potential to eclipse, even, dare I say....no I don't dare say.

Okay. I'll say it. Star Trek is better than Star Trek!

I felt this way that night, right after I saw it for the first time on Thursday night. But I thought it was just temporary euphoria and short term bias. But, now that some time has past--I still feel the same. And I think it can be backed up with concrete evidence. Honestly, has there ever been a better calling card, a more glittering, Trek-filled package, wrapped in popcorn munching joy, ever made before? Up to this date and time has a better two hours of Trek ever been shown? I think not.

There is nothing better on VHS, DVD, Blue Ray or film that would do a better job bringing in new fans, entertaining viewers the world over or representing Trek for new fans, old fans and even non-fans.

Star Trek is better than Star Trek.

For me, the longer time passes and I think about the movie some more, there are two things I really did not like about it. One, the lens flares were very distracted. I saw the movie on a nice audio and digital screen, and it actually gave me a headache a bit because of all the flares. The other reason is compared to all the other villians, especially Shinzon, Nero doesn't come close to being my favorite. I wish more was fleshed out on him.

I think my estimation has remained pretty much the same, actually. It's a solid three out of four stars, not flawless but a solid base they can build on, that promises to reinvigorate the franchise. It also has a charm and youthful energy that holds up well after repeated viewings, and that pretty much balances out the film's flaws for me.

TWOK was and remains the best overall Trek film, in my judgement. But it's a player of another era. Now it's the new kid's turn at bat.

I agree that it's the best Trek movie ever; and I started watching TOS in 1966. I wouldn't have gone to see it 16 times if I didn't think that.

It's not fair to compare two hours of a movie to three seasons of TV shows. But it is beautiful, exciting Star Trek.

I dislike it more with the passage of time. It's still a spectacular, fun film, but it's also quite ridiculous to the point of annoyance. The flaws become more obvious when the excitement wears off.

I'd rather watch quite a few episodes from each series over it.

Really fun movie, and certainly a joy when you stop to think of how horribly wrong it could have went had it been in the wrong hands like Berman or Braga. It certainly lived up to its namesake, but it most certainly will never surpass it.

Oh good grief...

I only saw TMP a dozen times...

It think it's the best movie and the reason why is because we're seeing the crew come into its prime. Someone else said it elsewhere, but I'll repeat it here: The old movies were about age, death, change because the crew and the ship were old, dying, changing. Those are great themes, but now we get to have some fun with the younger versions! "It's exciting!"

ST09 is a wonderful, fun movie, but in terms of cohesive, weighty storytelling, it simply does not compare to TWOK.

Dito that. I'm sure you'll be eating your own words soon enough. Star Trek was very good, but it wasn't quite as good as Star Trek.

X

I hate it when lens flairs are distracted. It's like, OMG, focus!

ha. Been on this board for a good 6 years and this is the first time I've been called out on grammer. Another board I joined last year called me out on it in like every post. Interesting. ;)

anyway, I meant distracting, not distracted. The Lens Flare was distracting.

Star Trek is better than Star Trek.

Change 'representing' to 'misrepresenting' and I'd agree. I think anyone turning to older material for the first time after seeing this film would be disappointed if they're looking for more of the same. Little about the movie's story, tone, or characterization resembles the prior art.

Perhaps my comparison is apples and oranges, or better yet, Tribbles and Gorns, but it's all we got at this point. The story isn't over. If Abram's and company spiral downward into a pit of hokum and jetsum "LOST" inspired, pointlessness than, well, we're in trouble and it's back to square one.

I understand the other side--Trek is about ideas, not just Shat in a ripped shirt fighting staffs with Spock while frantic trumpets music blares tensely in our ears.

Abrams needs to face that in the next film or the shine will wear off and the naysayers will have a point. My only concern is the writers are careful what point they try to make. That's the catch. Don't assume, as they often did with TNG, that we're all on board the Humanist happy bus. Kirk and Bones were always a foil to Spock's icy-logic, half-socialist agenda.

I think this is the real reason Abram's avoided the "issues." He stuck to common ground: hard work, childbirth, family, shared human tragedy and shared experiences with coming of age. All vital issues, but less controversial.

As the franchise continues, the piper must be paid and more issues will have to be brought to the forefront. But what issues and what ideas?

Star Trek '09 is the best trek movie ever made.

Not from a cinematic standpoint. Not even from a special effects and action perspective.Abrams did a good job, but the original series movies were better cinematically.

The reason nuTrek is the best of the bunch is because it gave the average moviegoer a reason to care about Star Trek again.Enterprise wasnt compelling to the average viewer. Neither was Insurrection, Nemesis, or any late-model Star Trek TV/Movie .

NuTrek gives the nobody viewer a reason to pay attention to the franchise again. For all the controversial narrative of the Undiscovered Country, or the action of the Wrath of Khan, or the subtexted environmental story of A Voyage Home, those movies didnt have to do what Abram's movie did-simultaeously appease old fans, win new fans, and do it with a movie that made sense and was entertaining.

For the above, it deserves merit as the best trek movie made.Hopefully so far.
