Long Overdue Sequels

Even the old TMNT side scrolling game was better than the shit coming out nowadays.

Ah yes, I remember the old days too. Every TV show was sent from the gods, the movies were so good that watching them cured cancer and there were blow jobs provided for everyone on government tab.

I miss it :(

The sheer amount of effort and money it takes to make a shiny, sexy current-gen game has pretty much crushed any chance of major developers regularly taking big risks. Screw innovating the gameplay... we have to specularize these bumpmaps, motherfuckers! I want bloom lighting shooting out of my ass, bitches! They're happy with making something that's already been made and giving it a new name. And lots of sepia tone.

Which means that the shitty and mediocre games will outnumber the good games. But, that's the way it's always been. The Angry Video Game Nerd is angry for a reason, amirite?

Trust me. Sometime, soon, we will get another (Insert Rad LucasArts adventure here) or Homeworld or Deus Ex or Beyond Good And Evil. Those kinds of games are the ones we remembered as good. But they too, were surrounded by donkey shit. In 10 years, we won't remember the names of most of the shitty games coming out currently.

That's my 2 Rupees.

Oblivion 2
You mean TES:V ;)

It's the same with every medium. The stuff that gets remembered is either bloody good, or has a shitload of money behind it.

I do not accept the notion though that some shitty sidescroller from yesteryear is in any way better than the likes of God of War, MadWorld, Force Unleashed... etc simply because, as it was implied, newer = shitter. Does not follow.

Mass Effect craps all over Baldur's Gate. Believe it. And no, I'm not just talking graphically, before anyone trots out that old false dichotomy.

When TES V does come along (given the popularity of the last two games, I think it's safe to say it will), where do you think they'll set it? Are there any other parts of Tamriel interesting enough to be the setting?

It's almost certainly being worked on as we speak, but they're keeping it under some tight wraps.

The Elder Scrolls forums seem to be divided between Skyrim and Summerset Isle.

Apparently Bethesda registered a Skyrim or Nord themed domain name, but I don't know if that's true or not. I'd say the home of the Altmer makes more sense - it's an island, so like Vvardenfell they don't need to surround it with invisible walls, trouble in the region was mentioned in Oblivion a few times in passing dialogue, Altmer architecture/society has never been 100% locked down so they have a blank slate in terms of art direction/design, and it would be great for them to ditch the "generic fantasy 101" look/feel of Oblivion.

Personally, and it'll probably never happen, but I hope we'll get a game that's set 50-100 years after TES:IV that encompasses all of Tamriel. Hey, I can but dream.

When chatting about this on the Beth forums, I daydreamed about the idea that the Tamrielic empire might be openly trading with Akavir, so we'd see more races (the monkey men, snake people, etc) and there'd be even more scope for political intrigue. I'd like to see Kvatch rebuilt, and to see how much the Deadric invasion changed the landscape of Vvardenfell.

Waffling now, sry.

I do agree. And actually when I go back and play old side scollers I do not love them.

Oh yeah, I remember hearing about the supposed registration of a Skyrim domain name. While I tend to play Nords, I think a game set in the land of the Altmer would work better, too.

Maybe in another 15 years, hard drives and storage mediums will be able to handle a game that massive. But probably not. That would be seriously cool, though.

I've heard rumours that TES: V is been designed as a Next Gen game, Blu-Ray discs are now (at least in prototypes) able to hold over 200gb I don't think it's too hard to see that ability in a next gen console that's 3-5 years away.

And lots of sepia tone.

Why does everyone harsh on sepia tone?

I like sepia tone. :(

But then, I like black & white movies, too. I would be very interested to see someone try to make a 40s crime game in film-noir black & white, using the faces and simulated voices of the period's actors.

I seem to be in the minority there, as well.

Rockstar are going to fulfill at least part of that wish with L.A. Noire.

I have to agree with the Streets of Rage series. Sorry Final Fight and TMNT but the Streets of Rage series was the best ever, especially #2. I know there have been plenty of games in the series in the last few years but what i really want is a true Phantasy Star game. No Online or Universe crap but a true 1 player epic RPG. There hasn't been a real PS game since PS4 on the Genesis in 1994. Shenmue 3 would be a must buy for me as well.

KOTOR 3(not an MMO)
Jade Empire 2
Force Unleashed 2
Oblivion 2
Hitman 4
KOTOR 3 is unlikely, since the MMO will likely take up the time of the developers for several years, barring its failure.

According to one Hitman site, there is another Hitman under production that is supposed to be released early next year. Unfortunately, there was no talk of this at E3, so maybe it's not that far along. Regardless, it's coming. I was wondering this myself, so I checked the other day to be sure.

KOTOR3 is unlikely from Bioware. There's no reason LFL couldn't have Obsidian (developers of KOTOR2) or someone else make KOTOR3.

One of those, perhaps sooner than you might think. ;)

As for overdue sequels, While I'm not usually a fan of prequel era Star Wars games (or any released after Phantom Menace for that matter) I thought 'Republic Commando' was quite good and deserved a follow up. It'd be nice to play a Stormtrooper who can actually shoot straight.

While I realise 'Deus Ex 3' is gong to be a prequel, it still appears as if it's going to be rather more faithful to the source material than 'Invisible Wars' was and to be honest, any sequel would rather invalidate my preferred way of ending 'Deus Ex'; I usually destroy the system and plunge the world into a new dark age. ;)
Actually, maybe that is the way to go: 'Deus Ex' meets 'Fallout' meets 'Conan the Barbarian'.

I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet but I'd love to see Gun 2. I had a great time playing Gun, although it was a little short.

Portal 2 is one I'm looking forward to.
