Pegg's Scotty: Just Say No!

What you have to ask yourself is - would the next movie be lacking something if Keenser wasn't in it? I'd have to say no, it wouldn't. I didn't hate his appearance in the film, but he's not an essential cast member by any means.

But Scotty needs a bigger role next time. And yes, he needs to have some (I'd say mainly) non-comic relief moments. Pegg's a good actor. He can do it.

This is it...he added nothing...if that much...I understand Rob's point about throwing the kiddies a bone with his inclusion but if that is the case then I think...no I know it could of been done a lot better -- cuter and more endearing. I really don't "hate" this character because he had little screen time...but I'm sure I would feel differently if he had a bigger role....which he shouldn't..thank you. As a matter of fact if this teenser dissappeared altogether in the next round...I doubt the non hardcore Trek fan would even notice....including the kids.

You should already know these four:

"Spock"
"Sarek"
"Nero"
"Geila"

A quick rundown from memory (so it may be a bit off):

"Raghoratreii" - Efrosian; President of the United Federation of Planets
"Kor" - Klingon; Commander (Original Series)
"Kang" - Klingon; Diplomat, Commander (Original Series)
"Koloth" - Klingon; Commander (Original Series)
"Dax" - Trill; Lt. Commander Science Ops (Deep Space Nine); Crewman aboard the Enterprise (Star Trek VI)
"Worf" - Klingon; Lt. J.g then Lt. Commander aboard the Starship Enterprise D (TNG); Lt. Commander Deep Space Nine
"Odo" - Changeling; Security Officer (DS9)
"Kes" - Ocampan; A short lived species, was also a nurse on Voyager (VOY)
"Neelix" - Talaxian; served as morale officer and cook. (VOY)
"B'elanna" - Klingon; Chief Engineer of Voyager (VOY)
"Tomalak" - Romulan; Commander in the Romulan Guard

Oh, and I loved the Spock/Uhura pairing. :D

J.

I recognize all the names from TOS of course and nuTrek...oh yeah and Worf too but aside from that I don't know who these people are. I have heard of Odo and Neelix though....they must of been popular characters.

Yeah you and everybody and their mamma like this Spock/Uhura thang...there's only a few lone dissenters on the other side...or at least no one that I've seen as vocal as me about it....I suppose we should all be thankful for that...last thing we need is two me's around here. :guffaw:

I'm wondering why all the comparisons of Keenser to ewoks, or Jar Jar. It was obvious to me that Keenser was R2D2 to Peggs C3PO.

It worked fine, It will be interesting where it goes in the next movie, but I look forward to it in any event.

Yep..

And how much screen time are we really talking about here? Those scenes, with Keenser, were aimed at the kids. It worked; mine laughed. (And so did i)

now, a whole TV MOVIE with Keenser? Like those awful EWOK TV movies? Yeah...that I would not be in favor of. But five minutes of a two-hour movie, for the sake of the children, isn't too much to ask...

I'm afraid I can't say I was a big fan of Scotty in the movie. Which was unfortunate, considering I didn't have any real problems with anybody else (to include Chekov--yeah, he was a live wire, for sure, but the character was seventeen years old). Yeah, I know that the TOS Scotty brawled on occasion, that he made jokes on occasion or had a sharp tongue...but that was FAR from being all that his character was. Pegg's Scotty seemed very, very simplistic in comparison to the character we really got.

Plus, I can't see an engineer just grabbing someone's dog and testing a piece of potentially dangerous equipment on him like that, not without extensive testing before moving on to a live subject. Certainly not the personality we saw from TOS Scotty, anyway. I just don't know how someone could've changed THAT fundamentally, though, to go from that kind of totally reckless livewire to the more traditional engineer we saw on TOS.

3. Not credible. Engineers just don't act the way Pegg does, in general.

Uh, how do engineers generally act? Like Puerto Ricans?

Were you upset that Uhura didn't smack her gum and file her nails on the bridge? She is an operator, you know, and that's how they, generally, act.

Silly argument.

Joe, rebutter

Some people have suggested they enjoyed Pegg's performance. Yet others, including myself, have stated that the portrayal of Scotty was terrible.

FWIW, one of the people very pleased with Simon Pegg's version of Scotty is James Doohan's son. He played the transporter crewman sitting next to Simon Pegg in the transporter room scenes.

I have been a Star Trek fan since day one and I loved Pegg as Scotty. The character always had a lot of humor.

The humour might have been "cheap and obvious", but people laughed at it because they thought it was funny every time I went to see the film. Scotty's scenes did the trick, and therefore, I liked them and him.

Cut new Scotty some slack! He's stranded on an ice planet with no food, a guy from the future turns up, tells him he's going to invent trans-warp beaming, shows him how and then gets him to beam onto the Enterprise at warp with this other guy. Scotty then materialises in the reactant tube, gets out from there to be surrounded by security guards. They get marched up to the bridge when the guy he's just beamed on with proceeds to goad the captain into attacking him and nearly strangling him.

I don't think Scotty had time to draw breath and have a sensible thought in the entire movie. The next one, that's where we'll see him holding the Enterprise engines together with spit and baling twine.

LOL did you say that in honor of the Puerto Rican day parade yesterday?

Engineers act all sorts of ways just like any other profession. What I think RBNN was getting at was that he/she has a predisposed notion that engineers are "professional" people. I think we can all agree ...wheather we liked Pegg;s portrayal of Scott or not...but he was hardly professional...not in this installment...but maybe next time.

Personally I thought Pegg did an excellent job and he was my favorite of the new cast. Sure he was different from the old Scotty, but I loved the humor and I thought the character worked well. My dad, a longtime casual Trek fan agreed and also thought Pegg did a good job. I'm a Pegg fan and as far as I know my dad didn't even know who Pegg was before he saw Star Trek.

That's not entirely fair. At no point did we see him being unprofessional while he was working. Sure he's funny, but while he's working he concertrates hard and gets the job done very well.

He's still cleaning reactant out of his ears with a towel, but he's paying enough attention to follow Chekov's plan for getting to Titan.

He did save the Enterprise from falling into the black hole.

^^^ What lines Rob did this "keenser" have? Jesus, mary joseph and the innkeeper even the name is stupid. Totally unneccesary and a waste of time. There was enough in it for kids...we liked TOS as kids...we didn't need stupid sidekicks...did we? I'll answer for you...no we did not.

I have made this argument myself, against Ewoks and Jar Jar, but I really don't think Keenser is anywhere in the same league. He's not really cute, he's just short (unless merely being short is automatically grounds for hating the character). He's not furry, he's reptilian/coral. Most importantly, he isn't constantly saying stupid shit in a pseudo-Jamaican accent.

Yes and that is this "Keenser's" saving grace...he's lucky he kept his little mouth shut. I just don't see the purpose, He added nothing...at least that wretched Jar Jar was supposed to "add" something to Wars.....well maybe I'm just a hardened old bitch -- I know I'll get no arguments from anybody about that. :guffaw: See y'all we can agree on something! LOL LOL

Okay, once and for all, here's the perfect reason for having Jar-Jar in the movies, as well as the perfect defense of the character::rolleyes:

Who else could have been the Han Solo figure? You know, it might have helped things considerably if Qui-Gon had run into a sassy, wisecracking Gungan instead of a bumbling innocent. I think Jar Jar Binks would have been much more popular if he mouthed off with his opinion that the Force is a load of crap, and called Qui-Gon a damn idiot for betting their ship on Anakin. That could have been interesting, but believe it or not, I actually like Jar Jar the way he is. Lucas was going for something different with Jar Jar, tapping into the mythological archetype of the wise fool. In ancient legends and stories (King Lear being a good example), there's a fool who tags along with the heroes, getting in the way and annoying everybody, but his innocence and good heart ultimately provide the heroes with some crucial insight or assistance that saves the day.
Jar Jar Binks is the wise fool. Yes, he's annoying. Supremely, ultimately annoying. But repeat after me: HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE. If everybody in the movie loved him and thought his wacky antics were adorable and precious, that would suck. But take note: they don't. Nobody likes Jar Jar. For Pete's sake, his own people banished him because he was so damn aggravating. Critics accuse Lucas of sticking Jar Jar in the movie purely for kiddie appeal, and yet the kid in the movie doesn't even like him. Anakin only bothers to speak to Jar Jar once, to warn him away from his podracer's energy binders, and steers clear of the Gungan the rest of the time. Only Qui-Gon seems to see any worth in Jar Jar's existence, and whatever it is, he keeps it to himself.
Ultimately, Jar Jar is directly responsible for setting in motion the entire third act of the movie. When all seems lost and dark, he inspires Queen Amidala to shed her dependence on the ineffectual bureaucracy of the Republic, and he gives her the courage to go back and fight for their home planet, on her own terms. He is the liaison who facilitates an alliance between the Gungans and the Naboo. He doesn't manage to lead his troops to victory over the battle droid army, but he does his best. Jar Jar the fool is indispensable to the plot, and a fine character. Okay, I could do without him saying "Ex-squeeze me," but nothing's perfect.

The Real Jar Jar
