Pegg's Scotty: Just Say No!

^^^ What lines Rob did this "keenser" have? Jesus, mary joseph and the innkeeper even the name is stupid. Totally unneccesary and a waste of time. There was enough in it for kids...we liked TOS as kids...we didn't need stupid sidekicks...did we? I'll answer for you...no we did not.

I have made this argument myself, against Ewoks and Jar Jar, but I really don't think Keenser is anywhere in the same league. He's not really cute, he's just short (unless merely being short is automatically grounds for hating the character). He's not furry, he's reptilian/coral. Most importantly, he isn't constantly saying stupid shit in a pseudo-Jamaican accent.

Yes and that is this "Keenser's" saving grace...he's lucky he kept his little mouth shut. I just don't see the purpose, He added nothing...at least that wretched Jar Jar was supposed to "add" something to Wars.....well maybe I'm just a hardened old bitch -- I know I'll get no arguments from anybody about that. :guffaw: See y'all we can agree on something! LOL LOL

Very few lines. He occupied less than 1% of the movie.

As for names, well that's just a pointless nitpick that has no value. I mean, come on: "Spock", "Sarek", "Nero", "Geila", and outside this movie, "Raghoratrei", "Kor", "Kang", "Koloth", "Dax", "Worf", "Odo", "Kes", "Neelix", "B'elanna", "Tomalak", etc. These are aliens in the Star Trek universe. If you want alien names like "Bob", "Mike" and "Jim", well more power to you, but they're a bit uncreative if I do say so myself. I like Keenser. He's not an alien bumpy forehead of the week. He is nothing like Jar Jar. I think people are so desperate to connect this movie with Star Wars, they'll pull anything out of the air to make it so.

I don't know why people hate Pegg as Scotty so much. I think he did a fine job. I just didn't like his annoying Jar Jar type sidekick.
Where is everyone drawing the Jar-Jar comparrision for Keenser? I've honestly not seen it, and am curious as to how everyone else is seeing it.
Yeah, I don't really get the Jar-Jar slam, either, nor do I think Keenser is another form of Ewok (like the world needs more Ewoks, right? ) I do think the character could have been more interesting if it hadn't been short-changed even more than the Scotty role was, but I have no complaint about Keenser beyond that. Even in the little we did get, there's a sense that the two of them have been cooped up together in this inhospitable backwater of a Starfleet post for quite a while, and have worked out a way to blow off steam without getting on each other's nerves too badly.

I just wish Pegg's Scotty's character had more hair....
But which haircut, though?
This one?

argh.gif

Pegg was great. The problem was that every single one of his lines was a joke. Plus he had his little jar jar buddy as, I don't know, comic relief to his comic relief.

Too much.

Let's see Scotty working miracles...and only joking sometimes

Ummmmm, can't say that I agree. You only have so much time in a movie. And its not like he didn't any engineering in this movie; he did. Just as much as Doohan did I dare say.

As for his goofy friend? This movie is not only aimed at YOU (star trek fan) but is really aimed at the rest of the world (non-trek fans). And that little fella was not aimed at you (star trek fan) it was aimed at my son (potential new Star trek fan). JJ is no fool. He knows exactly what he is doing..so I say...

More Kweenser (for my son and the little kids)

More of Uhura's underwear (the new RIPLEY of her time)

And more Uhura/Spock intimacy. (chics dig that stuff)

and the other stuff too...(for you)

Rob

What was the point of having Keenser (besides, heaven forbid, adding an alien to a sci-fi movie)? He was, oddly, the straight man while Scotty was the funny man. Keenser wasn't comic relief so much as he was half of a comedy duo that allowed Scotty to be the comic relief. Comparing him to Jar Jar makes no sense because Jar Jar was basically a buffoon (and arguably a racial stereotype). If anything, Keenser is more like Bud Abbott.

Yes he did occupy so little in the movie...that's why I was disputing Rob's assertion that he's in there for the kids... Sorry if I don't like the little bugger or his name. I don't know half the names you've listed above either. Just as you like him.... as you're free to do...I'm equally free to hate the little bastard...LOL. If they want aliens in Trek...I'm all for it...but why have this thing just standing there and do nothing? What is he alien scenery??? What did he really add to the movie? That's right...nothing...I'd rather that 1% of time been used to show more of Kirk growing up....or um...anything else for that matter*

*disclaimer...not though to see more of that Uhura/Spock tryst...we all know how I feel about that. :guffaw: and one more LOL.

Good comparison. I have seen the movie seven times now. And I am not sure where this anti-keenser stuff is coming from, well, actually I do know; from TREK fans. But the non-fans seem to like him.

Oh....but we can't have that...we have to stick to our phasers and androids and all that cool bitchin' trek stuff that made Nemesis such a great movie...

KEENSER will be in the next movie! At least my son (and isn't that point here) hopes so.

Who's more hungrier than shatner?

"ME!" Keenser says.

Rob

What you have to ask yourself is - would the next movie be lacking something if Keenser wasn't in it? I'd have to say no, it wouldn't. I didn't hate his appearance in the film, but he's not an essential cast member by any means.

But Scotty needs a bigger role next time. And yes, he needs to have some (I'd say mainly) non-comic relief moments. Pegg's a good actor. He can do it.

Yeah, I don't really get the Jar-Jar slam, either, nor do I think Keenser is another form of Ewok...

I see him as more of the Oompa-Loompa type (probably because Keenser was played played by Deep Roy).

I even made up a song in another thread that "Oompa Loompa Keenser" might have sung if he was there when Scotty got stuck in the water pipes (a la Augustus Gloop getting stuck in the chocolate pipes)

(sung to the tune of "Augustus Gloop")

I can't believe your comparing Keenser (LOL I've been calling him teenser which is really more appropriate given his small frame) to Bud Abbott...yeah he was the straight man cuz he couldn't talk!!!!

Oh, I totally agree.

But Keenser was in there to appeal, follow along now, to CHILDREN. This movie is supposed to be a family film; I know. I took my family. I have seen it seven times, and there have been families there. And the kids love Keenser. If some people don't, and they are over the age of twenty? WHO CARES. He was a bone thrown to the little tots..

You don't have to apologize, I'm just making a point.

I don't know half the names you've listed above either.
You should already know these four:

"Spock"
"Sarek"
"Nero"
"Geila"

A quick rundown from memory (so it may be a bit off):

"Raghoratreii" - Efrosian; President of the United Federation of Planets
"Kor" - Klingon; Commander (Original Series)
"Kang" - Klingon; Diplomat, Commander (Original Series)
"Koloth" - Klingon; Commander (Original Series)
"Dax" - Trill; Lt. Commander Science Ops (Deep Space Nine); Crewman aboard the Enterprise (Star Trek VI)
"Worf" - Klingon; Lt. J.g then Lt. Commander aboard the Starship Enterprise D (TNG); Lt. Commander Deep Space Nine
"Odo" - Changeling; Security Officer (DS9)
"Kes" - Ocampan; A short lived species, was also a nurse on Voyager (VOY)
"Neelix" - Talaxian; served as morale officer and cook. (VOY)
"B'elanna" - Klingon; Chief Engineer of Voyager (VOY)
"Tomalak" - Romulan; Commander in the Romulan Guard

I'm not saying you have to like him or that you can't say so. I thought he was a nice touch to the movie. He doesn't necessarily have to add anything, in all honesty. It was just a nice detail. That's all.

Oh, and I loved the Spock/Uhura pairing. :D

J.

Frankly, if Pegg was good enough for Herb Solow, then he's good enough for me.

(and if he wasn't good enough for Solow, he'd still be good enough for me :) )

Pegg was ace. In fact, even though I wasn't a huge fan of the film, I adored the core cast.

Can't wait to see more of Pegg's Scotty in the next film.
