I didn't get exactly what I wanted out of Star Trek. I wanted a complete, total, shameless, unapologetic reboot, with no nonsense about alternative universes and the like. I'm glad the film succeeded, because at least now Paramount can feel comfortable doing a future reboot.
The movie wasn't perfect, and I wasn't expecting a great SF storyline. It was still more fun than Star Trek has been in years. I hope for the next reboot Paramount sees fit to hire some real SF writers.
I agree with this assessment, pretty much. I enjoyed the movie overall, but there was nothing that made me feel like it was Star Trek and I really had no more of an emotional reaction to it than I would any other summer movie.
I also would have enjoyed it more if it had been an absolute reboot of the series (the way it should have been).
Now, did I want the movie to fail? No, but I could have cared less if it had succeeded. Did I want to like it? Yes, and I did to an extent--it just fell flat for me. I enjoyed Insurrection more, but I liked this movie better than Nemesis and The Final Frontier.
