"Bond 23" Announced!

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted before...

Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions Ltd and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures have today announced that Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen), Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (Quantum of Solace, Casino Royale) will be the screenwriters of the 23rd James Bond adventure.

Daniel Craig will reprise his role as Ian Fleming's James Bond 007 in the film, which will be a MGM release of an EON production. "Bond 23" is the latest installment in the longest-running franchise in motion picture history and will be produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. A date for the start of production is yet to be confirmed.

"Peter, Neal and Robert are extraordinarily talented and we're looking forward to working with the three of them," commented Wilson and Broccoli.

Peter Morgan is the award-winning writer of such films as The Last King of Scotland, The Queen and Frost/Nixon, which was based on his play. He has also scripted the upcoming "The Special Relationship" for HBO and Hereafter for DreamWorks. He will turn his attention to "Bond 23" on completion of these duties.

Since 1991, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade have collaborated on a diverse range of projects including The Italian Job, Johnny English and the past four Bond films. They recently adapted John Le Carre's The Mission Song and are also working on the upcoming sequel The Brazilian Job.

The hiring of Purvis and Wade isn't surprising in the least, but the absence of Paul Haggis (who, missing from the article, co-wrote both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace) must mean on some level they are acknowledging the somewhat tepidly mixed reception to Quantum of Solace, by the hiring of Peter Morgan, which can be conceived as "fresh blood".

I'm assuming they are keeping Purvis and Wade because they have a history with the franchise, having worked on the prior four films, and can bring the same expected touch of action and intrigue into the franchise, while Morgan is surely on board to represent the producers' intention of keeping the serious-minded progression of the character that started in Casino Royale (and was present in Quantum of Solace, just on a different level).

I, for one, adore this news. Peter Morgan, especially, is an exceptionally talented writer and I haven't seen a film he's scripted that I didn't like (I particularly enjoyed Frost/Nixon, which I thought was the true Best Picture of 2008).

All in all, I say this is exciting news! Can't wait to see who they pick as director.

Exciting news? They've put Bond in his coffin, then buried him, now they are pissing on his grave.

I think it's actually more likely that a) they felt Haggis' Bond-beginning story was finished, and b) he probably wasn't available.

Pretty much- IIRC Purvis and Wade write the plot and set-pieces while the more "artistic" writer, i.e. Paul Haggis last time and Peter Morgan this time, polishes the characters and writes the dialogue.

All in all, I say this is exciting news! Can't wait to see who they pick as director.

As long as it's not Stuart Baird...

I loved Casino Royale but Quantum of Suckatude drained all the life out of the franchise. Hopefully they don't decide to make another joyless, lifeless, unremarkable Bond film.

Casino Royale killed the franchise for me, did not like it

That was horrible, but so was Die Another Day, however Quantum of Solace is quite good.

No one posted this because this is non news. I thought they already gave it a go, it's not like Sony/MGM will stop making Jame Bond movies anytime soon.

Also I still can't stand Daniel Craig as James Bond. The guy is in his 30s and looks 55, he still isn't James Bond to me.

So if Peter Morgan is involved, in addition to Sheen playing a role, will this have to be based on a true story? The Deal, The Queen, Frost/ Nixon, The Damned United, the forthcoming The Special Relationship - all based on reality.

While I am assuming you are being facetious, Michael Sheen does in fact not have a role. I just wanted to clarify that. Well, he might at some point, but just because he's been in a couple Morgan productions doesn't quite mean he's going to have a role here. :p

Anyway, this would indeed mark Peter Morgan's first non-historical scriptwriting assignment, I do believe. Part of the reason why I find his hiring fascinating.

A villain that's bent on world domination, secretly working for Quantum, changing i's name to Smersh to hide from MI6. A precurser to Specter!

If they use that formula wisely, they could make an outstanding Bond film.

Casino Royale was okay. I've yet to see Quantum. Shameful admission, just haven't got around to it.

Exciting news? They've put Bond in his coffin, then buried him, now they are pissing on his grave.
Ah yes, but the end credits never lie...

...surely zombie James Bond will return!

I just finished Casino Royale (2006) for the first time a day ago. I thought it was okay, it didn't have the Bond feel to it until the Casino scenes, the opening chase scene was exciting yet bland. I felt daniel Craig did a great job but he had not fell into the role yet which is okay it was his first film as James Bond. I Eva Green was stunning and enchanting and it was nice to see James Bond fall in love and not the fuck you this film and never see you again type of Love we are used to other than maybe Tracy Bond. Vesper was a hell of a bond girl and her death scene was powerful.

I was skeptitcal of Daniel Craig and the new bond films but I give Casino Royale 7.9 out of a possible 10.0 which says hey Good Bond film versus Die Another Day? DAD was a killer of the franchise and I praise Casino Royale for saving my passion for Bond films.
