Please recommend me a good show!

Favorite shows:

1. Angel: the Series
2. Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
3. Roswell
4. Heroes
5. Bones
6. Dollhouse

And a ton of TVLand-type shows that I'm more than a little familiar with (I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, The Addams Family, The Munsters, Happy Days, The Partridge Family, The Brady Bunch, Mork & Mindy, Family Ties, The Wonder Years, etc...). And of course, I have Star Trek: the Original Series to add to that list once I watch a bit more.

^ David Boreanaz is featured unproportionally often in those. :D
Know all of those, like all of those except Roswell.

I tried the Tudors once but it had something immensely off-putting for me.
Yeah, I know, I'm difficult.

Maybe I'll give The Big Bang Theory another shot some time. Science humor is usually one of the best. :)

Gee, can you tell? David Boreanaz is my #2 crush after Elvis Presley. ;) I'm a known Angel-obsessee. Luckily, DB has been in 3 great shows.

Aw. Roswell was a great little show (season 3's horrible Jesse/Isabel aside--and I actually am able to appreciate Tess, the little murderess). There are some very touching episodes (4 of which I cried during). Max (Jason Behr) and Michael (Brendan Fehr) are my favorites of the cast. It shows its WB teen roots a lot (Buffy did, too--Angel, less so), but it has some great stuff in it; memorable characters and an interesting plotline with the mystery of their self-discovery. And did I mention Jason and Brendan?

The leather pants, the hair, the silk shirt, the lacking bulkiness? They had to use a Buffy season one pic for the last episode of Angel, didn't they. :D

I have a friend who is totally into Roswell. She tried to convert me from time to time, but I never took.

Journeyman
Kings
The Middleman :techman:

Liked Journeyman, heard of Kings and might check it out soon, never heard of The Middleman.

So far I am through half of the second season of Burn Notice and loving it. It's so entertaining! (Although I have to admit that the formula is getting a bit old. Still, fun.) And Michael Shanks! And Tricia Helfer!

The Middleman was a horrible cheesy comic book TV show on ABC Family for 10 episodes before it was canceled. If you liek that type of thing check it out.

That would be the last half of season 2 BtVS where that promo shot came from for Not Fade Away (me = geek). See those leather pants? It's from the Angelus arc! Definitely one of DB's peak physical years. And hey, he's still gorgeous at 40! ;)

Season 2, of course, is my favorite part of BtVS (though, overall, I prefer AtS--though I really, really love BtVS--especially the early seasons). Season 2 was the most gorgeous and dramatically epic season, though. "Close your eyes."

The premature cancellation of AtS (it was the only WB show that season that went UP in the ratings!) was a tragedy. The moron that canceled it to make way for a Dark Shadows remake that never got picked up got canned because of his stupid decision.

But yeah. I pretty much worship that poster/advertisement image for Not Fade Away. It's beautiful and perfect. It captures the essence of the character. Not Fade Away is, IMO, the greatest season finale ever. "Would you like me to lie to you now?"

Well, now we have the comics. Issues #15 and #16 are as amazing as anything in the show. Issue #15 ruined my Christmas because of poor Connor. #16 made it all better, though. Beautiful.

You should give Roswell another shot. Have you just seen episodes here and there or have you actually tried to watch it from the beginning in order? There are a bunch of Jossverse alumni in there, too. I especially loved seeing Julie Benz and Keith Szarabajka (Darla and Holtz--two of my favorites). Jason Behr (Max Evans/Billy Fordham) was in BtVS' Lie to Me.

Funny enough, another one of "the Roswell aliens", Brendan Fehr, was cast as Booth's brother on Bones.

Television is totally crossbred.

I thought Burn Notice had used its legs about 1/2 way thru 2cnd season then it got very interesting again. The new season is great so far(it just started).

As for Kings-its still running but was already canceled. I stopped watching when I heard and decided to wait for the dvd-then I can be totally immersed. The show really calls for that kind of attention. Its a bit of art, really, and would have made a great mini-series. I think it was too cerebral for Joe Six-pack to sink his teeth into.

Ah, yes! The Angelus pants! That I didn't think of that! The ultimate sign of pure evilness.

You're right, though. Not Fade Away was fantastic.

I watched Roswell episodes here and there. Which, of course, might have contributed to my not liking it. Who knows, I might give it another shot one day, but most of the shows mentioned here (and Lost, I feel like I will be hunted down if I don't give Lost another chance ... mmmh, maybe a little too much Burn Notice?) come first.

But hey, that might be where I knew Booth'(s?) brother from.

Sounds promising on Burn Notice! Although I haven't really lost interest, I just began noticing the formula. I think it helps when you can watch the episodes back to back.

The way you are describing Kings makes it sound like Carnival. Which is good.

Mad Men (when advertising wasn't bells and whistles and pop-up ads)
Breaking Bad (science teacher picks up a money making venture)
Dexter (when did medical examiners become cool people to do shows about - was Quincy all that great?)
The Shield (Bad cop/Bad cop story)
Nip/Tuck (silly doctors doing plastic surgery)

JMHO.

Another suggestion for Friday Night Lights.
Here's a promo for the third season (watching it won't really spoil anything)

some other shows i've thought were really good (thanks to netflix)
Carrier (a PBS documentary that follows the crew of an Aircraft Carrier)

Meerkat Manor (a "reality" show from Animal Planet that is strangely addictive)

West Wing (about posting on internet forums ;)

^Thanks for the links. I might check out The Shield next.

But right now I have to get over the fact that I don't have a daily dose of Burn Notice anymore. :(
Dammit, I'm having too much time on my hands! (Ah, Western Civilization, I love thy problems.)

I agree with most of the above already mentioned. Give them a second chance if you've only watched random episodes. I disliked Arrested Development until I watched it from start-to-finish. Now it's my favourite show!

So I suggest Arrested Development, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Roswell, The Tudors, Law & Order: SVU, ER, Third Watch, The Sopranos, Dark Angel, Moonlight, Prison Break, Lost, Battlestar Galactica,Startgate SG-1 and Farscape.

Nice mix of comedy, drama, and sci-fiction/fantasy.
Easiest thing would be to look them up from here: http://www.tv.com/

Of the shows you mentioned the only ones I don't know yet are Arrested Development (also on my list), Moonlight, and, well, Lost I will have to check out again.

Still, I like most shows you mentioned. :techman:

The Shield. Fantastic!!

Without a doubt you should watch The Shield. It's one of the best television shows I've ever seen and I suggest it no matter your tastes.

Let me be the third person to recommend The Shield, especially now that all seven seasons are available on DVD (at least, in Region 1--not sure about others).

This was a really outstanding hard-boiled police drama about a fictional precinct in one of the rougher parts of Los Angeles. Inspired in part by the real-life Rampart Scandal, it concentrates on a special anti-gang unit, the Strike Team, which is implicated in all sorts of misconduct and corruption. It also features some stories involving more conventional detective work, and the work of uniformed officers.

Over the course of its seven seasons, The Shield told a really epic story of the Strike Team's rise and fall. The writing and characterization were outstanding, and some seasons featured some heavyweight guest stars like Glenn Close and Forest Whitaker. The show was especially remarkable for its morally ambiguous characters: the leader of the Strike Team, Detective Vic Mackey, is one of television's great anti-heroes.

I would also recommend any and every show in which David Simon has been involved. Three of them are crime dramas set in Simon's home city of Baltimore, Maryland and were inspired by Simon's own investigative journalism:

--Homicide: Life on the Street, about the Baltimore Police Department Homicide squad;

--The Corner, a very poignant miniseries about the drug trade and its victims in the city's African-American ghetto;

--and The Wire, another truly epic story of crime, policing, and corruption, giving equal time to characters on both sides of the law. Although its particular theme was the omnipresence of electronic surveillance in contemporary life, it also provided a Zola-esque portrait of many of the social problems and crumbling institutions of a post-modern, post-industrial American city.

All of these series were made in a very naturalistic style, which is shared by another miniseries in which Simon was involved, Generation Kill, based on the true story of a Marine Recon battalion during the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

These shows are not to everyone's taste: The Wire, in particular, is a slow burn, and its "novel-for-television" format demands patient, attentive viewing. But IMHO, the five of them together represent some of the best American TV dramas of the past twenty years.

And if you want an off-the-cuff, irreverent show like Burn Notice or Pushing Daisies try The Riches with Eddie Izzard. Very quirky. 2 seasons out there to be had.

I think I'll check out The Shield next. A long list of people here recommending it (Camelopard giving a pretty convincing argument, thank you for that) has made it my number one next try. As soon as I get my hands on it.

Btw., is it just my imagination or are these recurring Burn Notice ads mocking me? I have no more new episodes, stop torturing me!

Dexter (excellent acting from M Hall)
Life on Mars UK (all around brilliant)
Entourage (mindless, but fun)
