Kelvin Blue Uniforms

Dax_and_Bashir_married.jpg

I liked the Kelvin uniforms, which came in at least four colors. They reminded me a little of Forbidden Planet. Didn't see any Enterprise influence, at all.

On www.startrekmovie.com, Costume Designer Michael Kaplan states that if the Enterprise (ship not show) uniforms represent the 60s of science fiction than the Kelvin uniforms represent the 50s of science fiction.

Then I guess the Enterprise(show) uniforms represent the 40s of science fiction.

I watched ST again the other day, the Kelvin has blue, a yellowish, and red colour uniforms. Of course the white uniforms for the doctors, which I think is a little nod to TMP.

You know now that you mention it they DO look like the TMP uniforms.

Why should anything from that abyssmal failure be represented here? I knew two years ago that this new movie would at least be better than every single episode of Enterprise, Voyager, and DS9. Why? Because Rick Berman and Brannon Braga were having nothing to do with it. After TNG wrapped up, those fools went insane!

Let us consider that Archer and the NX-01 never existed! Hey, it's Star Trek. Anything is possible.

They all still exist, and this isn't the place for bashing shows you don't happen to like. The remark about the uniforms from Enterprise was a legitimate observation to make here, and on-topic. Yours isn't adding much that's useful to the discussion.

I didn't mean it to. It's rediculous to think ever single Star Trek vehicle is going to be recognized in the rebirth of Star Trek. Why would Abrams want to pay homage to some piece of UPN crap that was cancelled because of lack of interest?

He wouldn't.

Actually in this timeline Enterprise is the only series that would have direct relevance. It's the only one that actually happened in this timeline, the rest were in the Prime timeline.

He did. It's on film and on the screen. It matters not whether you think it "rediculous"; it's there.

Now, shall we get back to the topic of the Kelvin uniforms?

SciFi Now's Edward Gross talked with costume designer Michael Kaplan about his work on Star Trek and it's actually some interesting discussion.

"There were certain things we wanted to be recognizable. Updated, but not done away with, like the Enterprise costumes. There's a '60s sensibility I thought was important to keep intact. It was really about finding a balance. I would do some sketching and say, 'I love this costume idea, but it doesn’t feel like Star Trek,' and we would abandon it."

This says you're wrong. It also implies, quite correctly, that Enterprise sucked. Sorry.

Admiral Archer's prize beagle that Scotty played fast and loose with -- and which Kirk knew about -- indicates the movie makers intend ENT specifically to be included.

Whoa! What time did that start? All I thought was he dematerialized the beagle...;)

Phooey! Now I have to go and hide because there is a reference to Enterprise... /sigh

Well, at least I scored a point because it's clear Kaplan, in his own words, was not drawing on, or making reference to, Archer's uniform.

Dog humping by a lonely Scot. That's a side of Scotty's pysche that's better left undiscovered. :)

No. You've misread the quote, and appropriated it to prove a weak argument.

Kaplan isn't referencing Enterprise, the series, but rather the costumes found on the USS Enterprise (ship not show) in the original Star Trek. He didn't want to do away with the 60s Enterprise costumes. Update but not throw out Theiss' design and look.

Moreover, Kaplan is on record as having not watched any of the previous Treks. His research consisted of only combing through the reference books to get an idea on the look of the costumes/uniforms. So he really isn't going to comment on the quality of one show versus the other.

His statements were solely on the work he was doing, which was updating Theiss' classic uniform design.

In the interview you link to, when Kaplan takes about the "TV show", he is talking only about the original series and not any of it's follow-ups or the prequel series.

I'm pretty sure he's talking there about the updated uniforms worn by the crew of this movie's USS Enterprise, and not at all about the series which featured the NX-01 crew, but whatever; it changes nothing. Star Trek: Enterprise is still referenced in the movie.

:klingon:

You can all suck my ridges!
And this I think we can do without.
