Wow, lots of new people on this thread, with interesting things to say :)

OMG, I've never realised that Darcy and Spock had that little something in common  No wonder I like them both!

What I love the most is that they were intelligent enough to not make Spock finish his sentence. This way they avoided the cheesy and let us use our imagination.

And you're right, Spock announcing the precise odds and Kirk telling him that it was going to work with a confident grin transported me back to the time when I was a kid and watched TOS.

Uhura is very intelligent, brilliant, dedicated to her work, beautiful and caring and she understands Spock. I'm glad they chose her as a love interest for him and not some random chick.

Oh, really? Man, I so can't remember many of the episodes, it's becoming more and more obvious to me. Haven't watched TOS in a long time. I used to know it all very well, cause I've seen all the episodes on TV many, many times, but I still don't have TOS on DVD and the last time I saw an episode was like 4 years ago. They're on my birthday wish list, of course, so I guess in two weeks I'll watch all of them.

But thanks for that hint, I totally couldn't remember there are indications of a relationship between the two in TOS. I'll check it out once I get the DVDs, for sure.

Of course, this is all in a different light now. ;) Well, in this case, I guess it's fine with me that they're kissing in the movie.

When I first saw the new movie I hadn't watched TOS in probably 10+ years. I was all "Gack! Where the Bleep did THAT come from!" (I went into the movie totally unspoiled-no idea of plot or actors even).

I've started watching the first season of TOS (I dug out my old tapes and am converting it to DVD) and I agree, it is obviously hinted at in Charlie X and The Man Trap. It could be argued that there is a hint of it in The Naked Time as well. Right after Sulu grabs Uhura there is a reaction shot of Spock which I'd never noted before. Which normally I'd have expected one of Kirk instead since he was right there too.

Kind of takes you back to "everything new is old again." ;)

^^^ that is. Impossible to say how many people Spock touched. Uhura is largely credited with breaking the Sci-Fi color barrier but as a WOC I also was thrilled to see Sulu. Interesting that she shares her own alt Trek with us. How many of us did the same?

A non-sexual comfort kiss seemed completely appropriate to me. I thought the scene was very well done.

    This may be cultural differences.

    Hello All,

Question for those who have read the book---Firstly, the book is "Star Trek" by Alan Dean Foster...Correct?

I just listened to the 5 min clip of the audiobook read by Zachary Quinto...such a beautiful voice, but I would like to read the book myself.

    Thanks for any help

I really would like to know if the book addresses the S/U relationship's beginnings....

Seven14, not really. I was disappointed. I wanted detail, detail, detail, not just on this subject, but on many others. Alan Dean Foster basically stuck to what played out on screen. Grrrr!

I was equally sad and mad about that. GRrrrrr! Why did they leave it up to my overly active imagination. Dang it, now ZQ is going to have to get naked even more!!!

Oh wait, what were we talking about, again?

May I also suggest splurging on the audiobook. PM me if you want details on it.

I could have written it better, and I'm not even a novelist.

Sulu was a breakthrough for me, and especially my brother. My dad is white, but my mom was Filipina, and my brother and I were always thrilled to see an Asian actor in any role that wasn't a stereotype. My brother, especially, needed male Asian role models to identify with, and in 1966, the two men who stood out were George Takei as Sulu and Bruce Lee as Kato on "The Green Hornet."

I was especially enamored with Spock, for every reason already listed, but also because the idea of an alien who was a "good guy" was so unique at the time, and I loved the idea. That he was also caught between two worlds because of his mixed parentage, was also something we could identify with.
