Why do dogs freak out during a thunderstorm

and the cat just lays there like nothing is happening? If the cat does get nervous it just gets up, walks under the coffee table and lays down. Darn dogs walk around all nervous like and cry. That behavior makes no sense. The cat is smart to seek protection and stay there. However, if the house were to collapse and the ceiling fell down the dog would be crushed because it was too busy walking around crying and not being smart like the cat.

Seriously, dogs are big babies.

There are some things you just have to admit that a cat is better at.

One time we were out during a thunderstorm with the dogs at home. When we came back, the front door was all scratched up.

I have had many cats and dogs over the years and although I loved both kinds I have to admit that cats are truly much smarter. Dogs are better companions because they obsess over their humans and act like slobering slaves to them, but cats clearly understand self-preservation much better. They just seem to "get" things more often as well.

Dogs in general seem very afraid of loud popping noises. If we ever put a balloon in the same room as our dog, my god would she freak out. And of course fireworks were the worst, she would nearly pass out from fear.

I have two dogs. Neither of them like thunderstorms, but the one is a complete wimp. She will either follow me around or hide under the computer desk, visibly shaking, until the storm's been gone for a few hours. The other just looks nervous.

My dog never liked thunderstorms. He didn't like the bangs of thunder, which frightened him, and he'd huddle up to people or be hiding behind the chairs and be shaking with terror.

Perhaps banging noise = danger, and the different reactions are because dogs are a lot bigger than cats? Cats can easily run and hide when there is danger, climbing up trees or over fences and onto the rooftops, but dogs cannot since they know they are less nimble and less able to squeeze through small gaps to hide, so they must be prepared to face danger and fight for their lives.

edit: this was a male labrador

My lord! what type of dogs do you people have? Chi-wah-wahs? are dogs have NEVER been botherd by THUNDERSTORMS.

Have a friend who has a dog that goes crazy during thunder and lightening, even setting off before we eve hear it (guess she can "sense" it in the air). They jsut give her a valium.

Our dogs only freak out when they see or hear food and fear they might miss out on any crumbs that might fall on the floor.

You must have some crazy dogs. My dogs don't care. My cat just hides under the bed. My kitten hasn't experienced a thunderstorm yet.

I knew someone who lived very close to an amusement park. Her dog would sit contently and watch the fireworks nightly during the open season.
