Why do dogs freak out during a thunderstorm

If you train your dog by throwing thunderbolts at them when they are wrong, they might just not like thunderstorms too much.. But then again what was Thor's dog's name to begin with?

I knew a black lab that was absolutely terrified of thunder. My weimeraner (sp?) would just look around nervously for a second then forget about it.

Oh, my idiot dalmatian is terrified of loud noises. Thunder, fireworks, the garbage truck, even the apartment building's fire alarm. If I'm not home she'll cower in the bathtub and dig at the walls. If I am home, she climbs all over me and shakes and whines.

Last week they were testing the fire alarm for two days. WHen they finished our building, they started testing the alarm at the building across the parking lot, and you could hear it faintly in my apartment. Suddenly, Lily started shaking in terror. Oy vey!

My dog did like the sound of the ice cream truck. When he heard the jingly music he'd lurch out of his bed and sit on the pavement and wait for the van to come. If he was late and there were other customers, he'd wait his place in the queue.

My dog just gets depressed and spends the entire day in the bathroom sleeping on the rug when it rains or during thunderstorms. It's just my luck that I get a dog that goes through weather induced bouts of melancholy.
