That's like those women laughing at the people drowning that one time I went to see Titanic, 11 years ago.

You can never be sure if someone is laughing at something serious happening on screen right at the moment they laugh, so sometimes it's misguided to assume that. For example, I remember an incident that occurred watching "Schindler's List" in school in about the fifth grade (I think). We were watching the scene in which the commandant gets up in the morning wearing his undershirt, pants, and suspenders, and there is a naked woman in his bed. This was one of the first times I saw a topless woman in a movie and my first reaction was to giggle uncomfortably, but instead, I held it in.

Unfortunately, I ended up letting out my delayed giggle just a short while later in the scene where the guy starts shooting Jewish prisoners at random with his sniper rifle just for the hell of it/target practice! One of the students told me he "lost respect for me" after that, but fortunately my best friend in the class (whose opinion was more important to me anyway and is still my friend to this day) figured I was laughing at the breasts and forgave me for my apparent insensitivity.

Well to be fair - the fact that Kirk is being born just at that point comes dangerously close to crossing the line into being ridiculous.

Indeed. Much as I enjoyed the opening scenes, it did border on becoming Narm. The fans here who are forming an appalled lynch mob because someone laughed at the opening 10 minutes of Star Trek (!!!!! ) worry me slightly more than someone who can't take melodrama seriously.

I agree. The opening sequence was loaded with bathos, in my opinion, and, to me, is just one in a myriad of things wrong with the mindset behind this picture.

Perhaps she just found the sci-fi concept silly, or the overall presentation melodramatic. She's hardly alone in that regard. Indeed, I think it would be more forgivable and understandable than walking out on someone for that mere reason.

That's probably it. There are a lot of people, especially women, who simply do not accept anything with aliens and spaceships as "realistic." If it's not a "realistic" setting, then the story cannot be taken seriously either.

I would never go and see this movie with someone who didn't like/know Trek. Never. I would not take kindly to anyone raining on my glorious Trek parade. If I was sitting next to someone who laughed derisively or made snide comments I would GET UP and move no matter how rude this was.

I was laughing when I learned both of my grandparents died.
Same thing when my aunt died.

It's just how I reacted to the deaths of those people.

It was a movie after all, and none of the events that happened in it happened in real life (well, our reality if the theory of alternate universes is correct).

I don't think that walking out on her because of THAT was really a good/nice thing to do.
You could have sit through the rest of the movie and then politely finish the date early.

Just because you cannot think of yourself being with someone who laughs at Star Trek is questionable (I think) in ditching them like this.

Individual people react differently to various situations.

I think it's pretty damn hysterical this thread I created has garnered over 40 something posts.

This girl also complained about the movie theater volume being too loud during previews!? Excuse me too loud?!? When is a movie theater's audio ever too loud. That's the point. However, for the record it really was not loud at all.

This girl screamed and oozed NO FUN from the beginning and came off as naggy, insecure, and the icing on the cake was her reaction to the first 10 mins of Trek. It really wasn't a big deal walking out on her for me because it's not like she was gonna be my first kiss lol/lay or last kiss/lay. I just refuse to spend anymore time than need be with what I deem to be closed-minded, naggy women.

And I'm entirely sick of seeing a huge conglamerate of girls dissing Trek.

Lastly, the other reason leaving was no big deal was because I have already seen this movie 6 times in the theater lol

Not trying to sound like some sexist, insensitive prick, but I don't put up with narrow minded people, let alone naggy women.

Just because you deem that she has some personality issues doesn't make it ok to just walk out on her, particularly over something as minor as this. I'll admit that the first 10 minutes was may favorite part of almost any movie, but I'm certainly not going to walk out on a giggler. Oh well, if you think being rude is the perfect strategy to show those pesky women not to laugh at your movies, then have at it cheif.

And I agree with a poster above me.... you don't take someone to Star Trek as a first date, especially if you don't know whether or not they like Trek.

I'm thinking walking out is probably not the best way to handle this. it could have led up to an interesting conversation later. of course OP may have had hints before opeing of the acutal film that they were not particularly compatible.
