Capt. Robert April in ST Sequel?

Who in the fuck is Captain Robert April? Talk about unnecssary. Tribbles have more of a case.

I love the idea of April being denied his commission by the crisis and Pike taking over. I could also see him as resenting that a wet-behind-the-ears Kirk gets the Federation flagship.

Well, you're in a good mood!

If you don't know who he is, it doesn't matter - just think of having an older member of Starfleet around, a bit of the history of the place - so it isn't just the college reunion kids.

Robert April isn't canon. No one outside hardcore Trek fans care about him. They won't introduce him.

Captain Robau never existed. This time two years ago, no one cared about him, not even hardcore Trek fans. Yet he was still in Trek XI.

Count on Captain April in Trek XII.
So your logic in "counting" on Captain April is because they introduced Captain Robau? :wtf:

Yes. Consider the implications.

The Kelvin's registry number starts with zero, pissing off some severely demented posters on here. Of course, there was also the NX-01, but oh well.

NX-01 is only two digits. There had been no prior two digit registry numbers, and therefore no precedent.

However, there have been a few three digit registry numbers. Having a four digit registry with a leading zero was stupid and unnecessary.

Stop with the digit shit. Moan about that, then moan about the stardates too.

I've never watched TAS, or know much about April, but I do what I do with Wikipedia on Memory Alpha (randomly clicking links and reading about that, until I see another random link that looks interesting). And I saw the bit with April and I thought "hm, nice". It would be a nice little nod to things like that, I don't feel the same way I do when I hear stuff about Pike though.

What I love is how Greenwood is really making Pike his own character. And for the record, if JJ puts Tribbles in, and references to nurses from TOS, he'll add in somewhere about April and other things.

If they do put April in it even for a bit, I think Brian Cox would be perfect.

Or Mel Brooks from Blazing Saddles!

It all depends how old they want April to be, and if we take his stated age in "The Counter-Clock Incident" as canon. If so, Nielsen's a bit too old.

But making Nielsen April would be a huge nod to Forbidden Planet being the father of Star Trek.

They could make April this legendary figure, someone who was very Kirk-like in stature, with tons of years and missions to his name.

Plus, it would fit with Greenwood being older, Nielsen older than he would make it a lineage of commanders from April down to Kirk.

Yeah, in that regard I'm fine with it. ;)

You could take the idea of "April as a Legendary Captain" and expand it a little further. Say, have Kirk and co. out exploring the edge of known space. April could be legendary because he and his ship disappeared in the same area a decade prior. The Enterprise could discover April and he could be..."changed" (kind of like Gary Mitchell) or any number of other things. Maybe not go the obvious route and make the "Missing Captain Is Eeevil!" but something more subtle or ambiguous...

Just a random idea...

I'd just go "April is awesome and makes Kirk feel inadequate" route, combined with the idea that some of the crew (and Starfleet in general) might feel Kirk didn't really earn his command.

Have April and Kirk have to work together to face some foe - maybe whatever was going on in the Laurentian System. Kirk earns April's respect, and in the process, everyone else's.

No one outside of hardcore Trek fans cared about Pike either, before Trek XI.

After the climatic fire-fight, visiting Admiral April steps out of the turbolift to tell Kirk and co. "I just wanted to wish you luck. We're all counting on you."

Captain Robert April was the first name that Gene Roddenberry choice for the name of the Commanding officer of the Yorktown. Which was later change to the Enterprise.
