Up - Discussion and Grading thread [Spoilers]

I'm not sure if I can see this movie this weekend, but I am looking forward to it.
I'll go see it this weekend, probably on a matinee.
Pixar has yet to disappoint IMO. Even Cars wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Cars was only a disappointment in relative terms. Compared to other Pixar movies it wasn't that great, but compared to any other mainstream animated film these days, it was incredible.
Went to see it at an early-ish Friday showing and I thought it was really good!
I do think Dug was my favorite part, though. I wish I could get one of those collars for my dog!
It even made me cry a couple of times...the story of Carl and Ellie and un-fufilled aspirations really struck a cord.

Pixar scores another winner. In other news, the grass is green, the sky is blue, and water is wet.
Seriously, I loved Up. I shocked by how the first 15 minutes were sad, which left me thinking "I'm not suppose to be crying this early on in the film!" But for every sad moment, the film quickly turned around and left me laughing. I'll be doing the normal-conversation-then-suddenly-yell-"SQUIRREL!"-look-off-into-the-distance routine for the next few days. Not quite up there with The Incredibles, Ratatouille, or WALL-E, but Up was a great film.

Saw the 9:30 PM showing (has the benefit of not having too many young kids; mostly people like me, who grew up with Pixar (incidentally, I remember the first Toy Story when I was, er, eight I think; that's gonna be a massive nostalgia attack next year)).
Absolutely fabulous. Right up there with Pixar's best films (Toy Story 2, The Incredibles, WALL-E). I almost never cry at movies (I can count the number of times on the fingers of one hand), but this movie made me cry twice (both the major stuff related to Carl and Ellie, obviously).
The villain of this one seemed a bit perfunctory; you could really see the core story here working without him, on an emotional level, anyway, though they needed a bit of action and a climax. Though I loved the dogs, and Alpha's Chipmunk-voice.
EDIT - Also, this was my first encounter with the new 3D; there was no 2D showing in my theatre, so I had to go to this. The glasses didn't bug my normal glasses as much as I worried they would, but still: enough with the 3D. It's lame.

Oh, I forgot to ask: Did anyone else feel like Charles F. Muntz bared a strong resemblance to Kirk Douglas? I know he was voiced by Christopher Plummer (who did an outstanding job of disguising his typical striking voice), but I couldn't help but notice the similarities.
He was based on an elderly Spencer Tracy, as I understand it.
No, Carl Fredricksen is partially based off Spencer Tracey and Walter Matthau (along with Ed Asner himself).

Need to give it some time and thought to properly place it in my ranking of Pixar movies. But it certainly up there near the top of my list along with The Incredibles and Wall-E.
I too thought the villian was rather shallow until I realized that he is essentially a mirror version of Carl. He went off and had all the adventures Carl dreamed of, but in the end he was alone with his dogs chasing something he could never catch while Carl lived a full happy life with Ellie.

I saw it with my two girls and we all loved it. The SQUIRREL!! thing will be a running gag in a lot of families this summer. I was amazed at how invovled I was with the characters in this movie and the depth they had. The message of how to deal with death seems like such a downer, but UP is not a downer movie (which would be incredibly ironic, anyway) I must admit that we saw WALL-E and we were all a bit bored with it. This movie IMHO did a better job of balancing the "serious message" with great characters and good story telling. Loved it and my girls already are begging to see it again!!
