The Official STAR TREK Grading & Discussion Thread [SPOILERS]

^ Yeah, I didn't remember the series of events very clearly when I made my post, specifically if and when the warp drive was knocked out. I seem to remember them getting a little too curious about the Narada when they could have backed off though.
I have always been a huge Star Trek fan, I used to watch the TV episodes on TV when I was a little kid, I vividly remember watching all the movies with my parents whenever they came on TV.
So, I had had high expectations for this one and had really been looking forward to it for some time.
I went to see it right away on its opening day.
I came out of the movie theatre and was completely blown away. I was enthusiastic about it. I loved this movie!
At first sight it's clear there's a great difference to the older movies, of course, like, the pace is faster, the visual is so different, there's so many special effects. All the things that are possible these days, with CGI and such! It's a different kind of Trek film, in a way, but I do see it as a Trek film, just a newer one, a kind of "polished" one, in a good way though. You know, I feel it's different and something new and at the same time it's familiar and you kinda feel at home. At least that's what my thoughts are concerning this. I think it's a great start for a revival!
On opening day, I went to see it with a friend of mine who had never seen the old films and episode or anything else from Star Trek stuff before. She liked this film so much, the first thing she said to me when we were leaving the theatre was that she desperately wants to see the original 60s episode and the previous 10 movies, or at least the 6/7 featuring Kirk, Spock, Bones and the original crew she "got to know in the new film." I was very, very happy she liked it!!! As I already mentioned somewhere, I think it's a nice film for Trekkies-to-be to get into the franchise, as well as for many old fans like us.
I love the cast. In my opinion, everyone of them have done a great job with this, even though I have to admit that when I first saw Chris Pine in the moie my first thought was "Something's wrong." No idea why, but he's the only one where I thought that. by the time I got out of the cinema, however, I thought he was the right one for the part.
The others, Zachary Quinto (on whom I have a MAJOR crush now!!
) as Spock, Anton Yelchin as Checov (oh my, that was such a cute performance! I love it!), Simon Pegg as Scotty and Karl Urban playing Bones... all these, I thought they were very well cast. In my opinion, the "new" Spock is actually the best one in coming the closest to the prime. What a strong, powerful, reasonable performance by Mr. Quinto! He did so well with it, however, there's no doubt prime Spock will forever be the best and classic!
In general, it's an awesome cast, strong performances that I think make the original cast proud and would make those proud that have already passed away.
Leonard Nimoy's cameo was amazing, I was SOOOOOOOOO darn happy to see him there!! 
What I found a little confusing is the alternate timeline and the time traveling etc. I'm not sure I quite got it when I saw it for the first time, and I just came back home from seeing it for the 2nd time, now it's a little clearer to me.
By the way, this time I recognised a few things that I didn't detect in my first viewing of the movie, and I immediately thought Chris Pine was great for the part, and I also loved the film even more this time around, which I hadn't thought would ever be possible, due to the fact that I was so amazed and not at all disappointed by it 3 weeks ago.
Ill most likely go and see it for a 3rd time!
To make a long story short, this film definitely exceeded my high expectations and I would LOVE to see them make more of them in the future!

Wife & I saw it last night...and we LOVED IT! There were a few things I wasn't crazy about, but it didn't detract/diminish the enjoyment/entertainment factor.
1) The typeface used in scenes when announcing locations (Vulcan, Iowa...etc) looked like the same cheesy 3D PowerPoint looking typeface used in JJ's TV show Fringe...works in Fringe, not so much here...IMPO
2) The engine room came off looking fake I wish it was a little more advanced and imaginative, keep it gritty but c'mon this is the future...damn near expected Laverene & Shirley to pop out somewhere....
Other than that I think it's a great way to relaunch the franchise - I'm looking forward to seeing more...I just hope they don't rehash, retread where they've gone before.....

Something else I noticed last night that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere... did anyone else notice that the center of the Enterprise's deflector dish opens up? I just caught that last night, and it's especially prominant during Nimoy's "Space, the final frontier" bit.
The Best Star Trek Movie to date. I love the origins of original Star Trek Cast in movie. I love the action and story.
I await a sequel and hopefully its about Kirk fighting his main enemies in show: the Klingons.

I just happened to stumble across the following review.
I have to admit that he does make a few good points about problems with the script, specifically how easily Kirk and Scotty were promoted to their positions ...
"Kirk somehow manages to gain command of the starship literally within a few hours of story time despite behavior that should inspire a court martial instead. Many of the characters have been transformed into dishonest shadows of their former selves. Engineer Scotty (Simon Pegg) gains his post through fraud -- one minute he is being reprimanded on an outpost planet, and the next he is the chief engineer of the Enterprise -- entirely because Future Spock finished an important math equation for him that he couldn't actually complete himself."

Of that I have no doubt, but damn it just didn't pass muster for me..a little more tech than what we got would've been appreciated that's all, hell throw me a digital matte painting.

It was unrealistic, but didn't bother me much. It was not a big part of the plot anyway. They did that in the end of the movie, so we could have Kirk as a Captain in the next movie without having a 5 years later discontinuity in the adventure. Again its not a big part of the movie plot.

I disagree with a lot of what the reviewer has to say.
One such instance is his assertion that Uhura is only on Enterprise because she was sleeping with Spock. My impression was that the only reson why she wasn't initially assigned to Enterprise was her relationship with Spock. The conversation only corrected Spock's attempt to show no favortism.

I'm sorry, but anyone who disobeys orders, talks back to their superior officer, bad talks the captain in order to provoke him in front of the entire crew and ASSAULTS two security officers forfeits everything in his position, first officer or not.
Kirk showed all the signs of being emotionally compromised for command and he didn't even get provoked into that situation.

Actually there's a lot wrong with that review. I could go through it point by point, but probably 85% it wrong and I'm not really going to takethe time to bother with it.

Oh, I forgot to include one other thing that I kinda didn't like so much with this movie: This Spock-Uhura relationship and kissing. Somehow that's wrong and doesn't fit.....
It's clear Spock has a very strong human side to him, which can be well noticed in the original episode and first 6 movies and therefore expressively showing it by letting him have a fling with Uhura wasn't really necessary.
But oh well, it's a great film!

The villain was thin. Not much on the literary science fiction front. Everything else was an infield homerun, a smashing blast for home plate. 4/5
