Re: Sec31 w/Klingons for Sequel save Khan for Third!

I would love to see The Borg, but I'm not sure if we can have an entire movie based around them. Just as long as there is no fucking Borg Queen.

Re: Sec31 w/Klingons for Sequel save Khan for Third!

What I find interesting is that when B&B brought back the Borg to ENT critics said that they were creatively bankrupt. People complained about Klingons overuse on DS9 and ENT now they are clamoring for them. When they introduced a time travel element that could potentially alter Trek history they were pissed. Now just because Abrams might do it they are loving it:lol:

The demands of a movie are different from those of a television show. I don't agree with every example you cite above, but it is true that certain adversaries or concepts were overused in the later shows of the TNG era (most notably the Borg, who were already overused by the later seasons of TNG).

The serial or episodic quality of the tv shows meant that if you used the same character or alien race over and over again, the concept would be stretched thin and watered down. In the case of the Borg this is especially clear. By the end, the original concept was abused to the point that it is hard to recall just how awesome they were when they originally appeared.

In a movie you are not going to have that same tendency for the character to become watered-down over time. You are looking for two hours of intensity, that capture what is iconic and thrilling about the basic Star Trek concept. The Borg, Khan, the Klingons... all these can provide that type of intensity.

Difference between a rebooted high budget movie franchise, and a crappy TV series. The Borg had been done to death in Voyager which pretty much killed them, ENT thought it'd be hilarious to just piss on the Borgs corpse.

Re: Sec31 w/Klingons for Sequel save Khan for Third!

Or how about ... here it comes ... something new?!
Pure novelty is not necessarily good.
Yes. And conversely, the usage of something we already know doesn't make it a better movie either. Of course something new would have to be executed well, too. Personally, if I had the choice between something we know and something new, I'd pick something new. Just because that seems to be the more creative thing to do. :)

Well, I agree that execution is the key, regardless of what direction is chosen. I am also not personally opposed to something entirely new.

I would disagree, however, that working with an entirely new character or alien race requires more creativity than reworking an iconic character or race. Almost like a sonnet in poetry, the pre-existing form provides a constraint for the creator to work with and against.

The point we are dancing around here is that longtime pop culture icons have usually become icons because there is something about the basic concept that is meaningful, exciting and enduring. The choice of villain may or may not be a crucial element of Star Trek. Certainly it is less important than, say, the Joker to Batman, or Lex Luthor to Superman. But sometimes certain details are more important than you think, or even the creators think. Take Indiana Jones. I think the religious element is probably more important to why Indy became an icon than even Spielberg realized, which is partly why 1 and 3 are easily the best.

The benefit of digging around in the franchise's past for an adversary is that you are probably more likely to get to the core of what made Star Trek iconic in the first place. Not saying it would be impossible to strike gold with something entirely new, but I do think there are benefits to considering classic adversaries.

Characters you would like to see show up in the Alternate Timeline

I'd love to see Gary Seven show up -- not in a remake, but as part of a new story.

Re: Characters you would like to see show up in the Alternate Timeline

Hmm...

1. Trelane

2. The Guardian of Forever (after a few movies, Kirk comes across the Guardian and is given the chance to 'reset' his life so Nero didn't alter his destiny - basically erasing NuTrek. His father lives, Vulcan survives, but everything he's known vanishes. Does he take it?)

3. The Empath setup - how would THIS Kirk/Spock/McCoy respond to the whole Gem scenario?

4. T'Pring - assuming she didn't die on Vulcan, of course, she's still out there! But Spock Prime didn't have a relationship with Uhura. Yikes! Will there be a Uhura/T'Pring catfight?

5. Tribbles. Just for fun. :-) I know Scotty had one, but c'mon, just one? That's not nearly enough...

6. Wasn't McCoy supposed to have a daughter named Johanna? It might be interesting to work her in somewhere, McCoy needs some character development...

7. Okay, Harry Mudd was pretty over-the-top, but you have to admit he'd make a pretty entertaining B-plot. Maybe.

8. Porthos. That poor puppy is still stuck in subspace!!

LOL stuck in a transporter buffer somewhere? The new version of "Relics" LOL.

Picard in his younger days...maybe this time he didnt get stabbed...

Just one, eh? Well, a little bit of grain can fix that. :techman:

6. Wasn't McCoy supposed to have a daughter named Johanna? It might be interesting to work her in somewhere, McCoy needs some character development.

Ya, but this is Star Trek. Only sons matter in this universe.

Here's my list.

1. Number One! I'd introduce her as being the only cadet to legitimately beat the no-win scenario without cheating. That'd probably throw Kirk through a loop.

2. M'Ress. It can be done on a TV budget (Doctor Who), it sure as heck can be done on a high-budget movie, this time with a tail!

3. Kyle. My favorite re-occurring bridge officer. I'd choose Daniel Craig to play him, but I think he's too old.

4. Robert April. Maybe as a captain who observes Kirk's actions while being Captain of the Enterprise. I'd love to have someone who gets a great deal more respect than Kirk.

5. Arex. This alien is just cool. I was a bit disappointed that the Alien on board the Kelvin wasn't a part of the same race, cause every time I looked at her, I thought "Arex!". I'd love to see what kind of live action would can be done with this character.

Re: Characters you would like to see show up in the Alternate Timeline

Admiral Archer's prized beagle would be cool, but I'd like to see what the hell Admiral Archer is looking like these days.

Re: Characters you would like to see show up in the Alternate Timeline

Commodore Matt Decker, alive and sane and having not lost his command.

Re: Characters you would like to see show up in the Alternate Timeline

yes, a sane decker before the hell he went through.
kirk very much seemed to admire him and even spock knew about their friendship.

if they have klingons kor.

just what kind of affect will the loss of vulcan have on the empire.
will it be enough for someone like the romulan commander who was weary of war to
finally stand up and try for change instead of just accepting their fate.

another vote for arex

the vedela from the animated series. considering how they can manipulate time
they might be able to sense how things have changed.
i always liked the idea they were the mystery race behind gary seven.

the andorians..
from babel they seem to get along better with vulcans then they did
during enterprise period.
if the relationship between the species had evolved they may see themselves
as protectors of the few remaining vulcans.

the first federation

but it would also be nice to see some new civilization and boldly going.

Re: Characters you would like to see show up in the Alternate Timeline

The Doomsday Machine as Borg killer, the Gorn, and the Tholians.

Would anyone like to see T'Pol in the next movie?

I would really like to see the repricussions of the destruction of Vulcan dealt with more in the next movie. I was thinking that it would be a great way to also use T'Pol. Does anyone else think it would be great to see Jolene Blaylock reprise her role for the next film?
