Ab exercises

Otherwise than crunches does anyone here know of any particularly effective ab exercises?

The twist thing with a medicine ball. But I think that benefits the side muscles a bit more. Still a good exercise though. And at my gym I use the crunch machine with weights on it.

You do realize that there aren't any specialized exercises that will effect just one portion of the body, right?
Any amount of exercise will result in the fat to be distributed to the areas where the brain thinks it's necessary.
Targeted exercises have little to no effect on areas you want to be affected.

I'm not saying they won't have any effect on the body ... no ... but you won't really be able to affect the abs themselves like that.

Crunches are the most popular ab exercise ...
You could also do various cardiovascular exercises such as swimming or running.
Those 2 will have the most effect on your body/muscles in general.

Of course ab exercises directly affect the abs. Abs are muscles.

Now, the fat covering the abs is another story. ;)

The Dreaded "Plank" Position can do wonders.

Plank offers two benefits. Not only working on your abs, but also your back muscle. Because people might often forget that if you work on your abs, you must equally work on your lower back or else they'll be an imbalance.

Yeah, I've found a a good mis with the plank, a few crunches and the bicycle. I'm seeing some pretty good improvements. I also jog, do push ups and squats so I get a lot of exercise all around. Doing some good ab exercises does tend to help get rid of an extra fat around the tummy, though.

This may be a stupid question, but could someone please explain to me what this "plank" position is? I try to get some exercise every day (my building has a small gym -- it's not terribly modern, but it does the trick), including some crunches and sit-ups for my abs, but I'm always open to trying some new stuff.

I've never been much of a fitness enthusiast, but I've been trying to remedy that in the last couple of years. I'm still not all that knowledgeable about specific exercises and which ones work best for certain muscles, but like sidious618, I'd like to improve my abs too, so any advice would be appreciated. :)
