More like *too* human. There's too much conflict. Too much whiny emo angst.

I haven't completely watched the series but the only time in BSG that I really became annoyed and mad at a character's actions was Helo. I think we all know what I am talking about. He should have been airlocked after what he did. At the very least stripped of his rank and jailed for the rest of the series. Instead everyone basically turned a blind eye which I found really hard to believe.

I will grant that I really did find Helo annoying.

However, a character like Baltar was well done.

^ I guess my problem is that I actually like my heroes to be a little bit perfect. I don't believe in shades of gray, I want clearly defined good and bad guys. And excessive characterization is a no-no as well. This is why I love Law & Order so much - it's character proof. :)

Well, the thread title says "In history" not just sci-fi, so I'm going to go with Urkel. Especially after he got older and it was just really, really sad.

Baltar was disgusting toad who deserved to die horribly. Fitting that he lived.

Helo and Athena were the only truly good, decent people on the show. Everyone else were a bunch of degenerates. I find the argument that the characters were "human" silly. Real humans work together and act like grown ups when the shit hits the fan and put aside all their petty bullshit. The characters spent so much time cheating on, backstabbing, betraying, plotting against, and talking shit on each other that to call them human is an insult to hummanity. And then of course, it was all forgiven and forgotten by the next episode so they could do it all over again. And Ron Moore said he hates The Reset Button. The characters nack for cognative disodence would amaze even the cast of The Days of Our Lives. Which is basically what the show was. Once you got past all the cool space battles, psuedo-intellectualism, and gritty drama it's true self is laid bare for all to see. The fucking Toasters were more human then The Colonials.

I'm no bleeding heart, idealist, Roddenberryite. But even I know Ron Moore's post-9/11 victim, nihilistic message is full of shit. If humanity was as disgusting as Ron Moore and his fans think it is, then we would have never made it out of the Stone Age much less explored the globe and reached space. If Ron Moore would have been in charge, we never would have.

Does a single day ever go by where you don't feel the need to do some boring BSG bashing somewhere on the TrekBBS?

    Just curious

Who me? I really don't all that much. Not as much as some people anyway. Certainly not as much as MasterofOrion. I'll argue that the show has very strong merits. The acting is stellar. The characters are well designed. The writting is solid. The stories are good. I just don't care for it's message and themes.

What I take issue with is the idea that it's OK for the characters to be annoying assholes because "they're human". The hell if they are.

Frankly, I don't see the attraction of watching characters that are excessively human anyway. Isn't that what TV news is for? :p

Ahhh, resurrected just in time for Halloween. Love that undead thread smell.

My pick: Starbuck. Every time she was onscreen was a suckfest for me.

I said it. I stand by it.

    Waiting for the close...

For me, it's either ALF, Arnold Horshack from Welcome Back Kotter, The Tales from The Crypt corpse host or TWIKI from Buck Rogers.

No way. Jack is awesome. I just don't think a K-Mart version of Angel is really the best vehicle for him though.

Gwen is a total Mary Sue. "Tee hee. I'm so sweet and cute and naive. Tee hee." All the characters are stuck in permanent teenager mode, but Gwen is one of the worst. You're a cop! Act like it.

And I think people can forgive all of that, but they could not forgive her for cheating on Rhys. Sure the writers acted like it never happened. But it still did happen.

I hated him more then anything in season one. There was just nothing there character-wise other then the fact he was an asshole. He wasn't even a funny, charismatic asshole. He was just an asshole. An overbearing, bullying asshole. And the fact that no one called him on it, made it all the more frustrating.

However, they were able to redeem him in season two. They gave him humor and depth and empathy. They toned-down his dickishness so that it was nearly over-the-top and unbelievable. He actually acted like a professional should. So by the end, he was my favorite character because of it.

The characters on NuBSG were anything but human. To me, flawed means something like you fart in the bathtub. To Ron Moore and his fans, flawed means giving an enemy a nuclear bomb so she can murder a couple thousand people because you feel sorry for her and then having a good emo moment about it. The characters on B5 were flawed. The characters on Firefly were flawed. The characters on DS9 were flawed. The characters on NuBSG were just straight up degenerate low-lifes. And they were only that way so Ron Moore could give the loudest "FUCK YOU!" to Star Trek imaginable.

Crichton was a HELL of a lot more annoying than Twiki...

Another annoying character (or kind of character): Almost all defense attorneys ever appearing on Law & Order. :p

How is this thread still going? The correct answer is and always will be Neelix.
